way things don't work, and to start doing it differently..."

Streaming media company demands patent
fees from colleges
08/10/2004 12:19 PM
Some American colleges and universities received anticipated
letters this week from
Acacia Media , requesting the payment of licensing fees for
streaming media. The firm
has sent letters to dozens of colleges in recent days claiming the
schools' use of streaming video in areas like distance learning and
video lectures violates company patents. The message: pay up, or risk
getting sued.
"Certainly for colleges that do a lot of distance education, this
could be a major problem," said Steve Worona, director of policy and
networking programs at EDUCAUSE...
Acacia has been campaigning
for fees for streaming media, for which it claims several patents as its intellectual
property .

Media Company Wins Award of Excellence
from Training Industry
09/18/2004 03:55 AMThe Canadian Society for Training & Development has awarded its 2004
Canadian Award for Training Excellence to ExecuGo Media for its
design, development and delivery of “The Hallmark Way,” a “back to the
future” kind of employee learning program for Hallmark Canada. In an
era when most training industry pundits debate whether the future of
business training lies in e-learning, classroom events, print
materials or a combination of all three, ExecuGo Media and Hallmark
have decided that the answer is: none of the above. The Hallmark Way
features the ancient art of people helping people – with the right mix
of new-age digital and traditional print media simply supporting their
efforts. The Canadian Society of Training & Development will officially
award ExecuGo Media and Hallmark Canada the Canadian Award of Training
Excellence for The Hallmark Way at a ceremony during its annual
exposition in November. [PRWEB Sep 18, 2004]

NY AG Buys Google Ads On Keywords Of
Company He's Investigating
04/06/2005 06:28 PMWhile most US courts have determined that there's
no
trademark infringement in buying a search engine advertisement
based on a trademarked keyword, there are still
some
cases going forward. So, it's a bit surprising (though, amusing)
to find out that New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer was caught
buying trademarked
keywords promoting his campaign for governor. The keywords in
question were for AIG, the big insurance conglomerate that Spitzer has
been investigating for fraud. From a publicity standpoint, perhaps it
makes sense. People searching on AIG may associate Spitzer's name
with the company, but this is a bit trickier than someone just
trying
to get some publicity off of a popular keyword. Spitzer now
claims it was a mistake, and the ads have been removed. Of course,
what's to stop someone else from buying the same ads, and linking them
to Spitzer's campaign site? In fact, at the time of this posting, it
looks like some random advertiser
has picked up on this story
and is
advertising some random anti-Google site, claiming that
Eliot Spitzer and Google "overstep their boundaries." Once again,
people seem to be trying to make a point through popular keywords.

07/13/2004 12:13 PMWell, it's not quite as big a deal as Yahoo buying Oddpost, but Google
has now
bought photo-sharing company
Picasa, which was already a Blogger partner. It's not a huge
surprise to see Google expanding their offerings in more of the portal
direction. The only question, of course, is how many spare Gmail gigs
are going to be offered for people storing photos. Also, will people
now complain that Google is scanning your personal photos in order to
put up relevant advertising?
