ICANN Board Governance Committee update

ICANN Board Governance Committee update 04/07/2005 03:57 PM

There has been a great deal of discussion about the Board Governance Committee's draft of the Core Principles and Corporate Governance Guidelines. Section 5(e) says "Having given the chief executive delegated authority, Board members should be careful – individually and collectively – not to undermine it by word or action." The idea behind this is that the board should not be undermining the activity of the CEO after it has delegated a task. As a CEO, I can understand this intention, but I believe that it should be decided operationally and should not be in a guidelines document to be signed by the board. In addition, I think the word "undermine" is vague. In many ways, the role of the board is to "undermine" management if management is not doing the right thing.

During the public forum (which is going on right now), Alejandro Pisanty, the chair of the committee, pointed out that there were a number of comments and that the committee is working on revising the draft. If you have comments, I suggest you submit them through the link above. There were a number of constructive comments from other participants during the forum and they will be posted on the site soon.

Go OpenSolaris!

Go OpenSolaris! 06/17/2005 04:52 PM

The said it couldn't be done. They were wrong. OpenSolaris has been released under a true open source license and the project will be run as a true open source project, with outside contributors and independent distros and everything. Congrats to everybody inside and outside of Sun who helped maket his happen. This is definitely a historic day for open source.

It may also be a historic day for blogging. It's not a "normal" product launch, that's for sure. Instead of launching OpenSolaris with a media splash, press releases and a carefully crafted message, the OpenSolaris crew has taken over blogs.sun.com and let the bloggers loose. They're blogging (blogs.sun.com and opensolaris.org) and tagging (technorati, del.icio.us and flickr) and chatting (#opensolaris at freenode.net) and badging and getting the word out in their own imaginative and personal ways. I'm proud to be even a small part of that and I can't wait to get my hands on the code (of course, like everything else in my life, that'll happen right after I finish the book).

OpenSolaris Blogs Oh My

OpenSolaris Blogs Oh My 06/17/2005 04:38 PM

They told me they were going to try to get lots of people to blog about the launch, but this is remarkable: this morning they knew about 132 bloggers and 215,000 words, and there’s another dozen pieces every time I turn on my aggregator. The communications and culture shift happening here is maybe just as interesting as OpenSolaris itself. Herewith observations, and pointers to some particularly sharp-edged samples. A new thing is in the world...

GNU/Solaris?

GNU/Solaris? 04/04/2005 04:07 PM
Solaris engineer Eric Boutilier has been running a series entitled “Unix from Scratch” (latest installment here; hey Eric, you need a table of contents). What’s at the end of the road Eric’s heading down is “GNU/Solaris”; a distro that does what Linux does, but has the Solaris kernel and management goodies; see his posts here and here. If I understand things correctly, once OpenSolaris ships, anyone with the energy and skill can just go and build that distro, no permissions required. I think Sun should do it, and then support it. Obviously, we can’t weaken Solaris Classic because our customers depend on it and furthermore we make money supporting it; but GNU/Solaris would be a darn nice product, and a nice new line of business.
