Google URL Searches
Google URL Searches
09/07/2004 10:24 AMHere's a handy trick with Google: "inurl" searches. You can search
for a text string in just the URLs of Google's index.
For instance, I wanted to know what content management system a
certain site used. All of the site's URLs had the same patten
("/cgi-bin/b7/..."). This search in Google...
inurl:cgi-bin/b7/
...produced a list of pages with this same URL pattern. From
there, it wasn't hard to find one that referenced their platform: Bazaar<
/a>.
Handy.

Google Quietly Introduces Book Searches
Google Quietly Introduces Book Searches
12/17/2003 08:22 PMYou just can't stop Google, it seems. Last week they were adding
features like the ability to track your FedEx packages, and now
they've launched the beta test of their
book
search capabilities. While, this is clearly something of a
response to Amazon's famed
search
inside the book feature, the end result isn't quite there. While
there had been rumors that Google was looking to
impleme
nt a similar service, what they just (very quietly) launched is
much simpler. Basically, they've just stored book flap info, and
mixed it in with the regular search results (though, as the article
points out, it doesn't show up that high on most searches). However,
if you find one, it links to a page within Google that includes
the info from
the inside flap of the book, a few simple facts about the book and
links to buy the book at Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Books-A-Million
(they haven't even added in pricing info yet). While they don't have
affiliate codes to make money off of those links, I imagine it
wouldn't be difficult to add. The page does have their typical
contextual Adwords advertising, though - increasing their inventory.
Is AOL Making Political Adjustments To
Google Searches?
Is AOL Making Political Adjustments To
Google Searches?
02/10/2004 05:32 PMThe concept of Google bombing is
not
new, and we've already discussed what a pointless waste of time it
is - sort of the equivalent to scribbling someone's name and an insult
on the bathroom wall. It does a lot more to show the immaturity of
those involved than to actually convince anyone of the "insult" being
proposed. However, AOL is apparently taking another view of the
practice. They've
edited out the famous "miserable failure" Google bomb
result that pointed to George W. Bush. While AOL is free to do
what they want, this opens up quite the can of worms. AOL says they
did it to get rid of "obviously irrelevant results." The problem,
though, is that a group of people who were upset about the miserable
failure Google bomb have been trying to associate the phrase with
various other people such as Michael Moore, Hillary Clinton and Jimmy
Carter - and AOL saw no problem leaving those links. Once you start
editing the search results, it leaves you wide open to questions about
why you edited them the way you did. AOL would have been much better
off ignoring this matter, and letting the search results fall as they
did.

cle.com/free/2004/04/2004040901n.htmGoogle, the
popular search engine, has teamed up with the Massachusetts Institute
of Technology and 16 other universities around the world to provide a
way to search the institutions' collections of scholarly papers,
according to university officials. A pilot test of the project is just
getting under way. If all goes as planned, the search feature could
appear on Google in a few months, said MacKenzie Smith, associate
director of technology for MIT's libraries. She said the search would
probably be an option on Google's
advanced-search
page. This has been added to
