OpenOSX on Friday introduced GrassPro, a suite of Geographical Information System (GIS) applications and utilities that run on Mac OS X v10.3 systems equipped with X11 installed. GrassPro costs US$50 on CD or $40 if downloaded; a $5 CD discount is available for members of educational institutions.

Apple subsidiary FileMaker Inc. on Monday announced that for a limited time, it will offer a free FileMaker Applications Suite with its database software FileMaker Pro 7. The suite, valued at US$385, includes FileMaker Meetings, FileMaker Tasks, FileMaker Work REquests and FileMaker Donations -- it's available as an electronic download. The deal is available to customers in the U.S. and Canada who buy new licenses, upgrade or buy educational versions of FileMaker Pro 7 through June 22, 2005.

With the release of Creative Suite 2 (CS2) on Monday, Adobe Systems Inc. will also introduce activation for its entire CS2 product line. Activation is a process the customer must complete sometime during the first 30 days of use in order to verify that the product is using a valid serial number. Adobe says they are not changing the way they do business, rather enforcing the terms of the license agreement, which says the product can be installed on only two machines.

Avid Technology Inc. subsidiary M-Audio has introduced iControl, a USB-based hardware interface for GarageBand. The device features dedicated transport buttons and jog wheel, eight rotray encoders that can be assigned to track functions like volume and pan (or GarageBand's EQ or any other Audio Unit plug-in). Also included are dedicated mute, solo and record-enable buttons, plus a master volume fader. It costs US$179.95. System requirements call for any Mac running GarageBand 2.
