Can Open Source Catch Microsoft By The
Horn?
04/29/2004 09:17 AMHow exactly do you stop a much awaited, overly hyped software release
from the billion dollar Redmond giant Microsoft? The Open Source front
has no definite strategy on how to catch the raging bull by its
‘Longhorn’, but is closely following the “If you cant beat
‘em, join ‘em” mantra. Microsoft’s Longhorn release is slated
for 2006, and the Linux desktop segment is in the firing line to be
gored in its tracks. With a gradually developing market, the
acceptance of Linux at the desktop level is still relatively low, and
the last thing that Linux vendors need is a new OS from Microsoft.

05/08/2004 11:48 AMSoftware giant Microsoft (Nasdaq:MSFT - news) had received anonymous
tip-offs about the worm's creator and then contacted the Federal
Bureau of Investigation and German police, Federau said. All three
worked together to find the suspect.
Federau said the man, who he described as a highly intelligent
"computer freak" living with his parents, was arrested on Friday near
the central German town of Rotenburg but was no longer in custody.
Authorities did not know if the man had created all the versions of
Sasser but said he had worked alone.

Although the sales of mobile devices is continuing to grow,
Canalys.com, a market research and advisory company, is reporting that
tablet PCs are an insignificant part of this growing trend. Their
current research shows notebooks are outselling tablet PCs by a factor
of 100 to 1. Personally I’m not surprised by this report as I
feel that tablet PCs are still not ready for primetime and I’m
beginning to wonder if they ever will be…

Tight Systems has 'The Secret Store,' where they
sell things like the DVX-POD to keep their head above water as they
try to develop the TAZI media player (hint: it's not that secret).
Well they somehow got a hold of a box of U2-edition iPods that they're
going to sell at $250 a pop—$100 cheaper than they go from
Apple. Since iPods are in such short supply this week, I thought it
might be something that you're interested in. Bear in mind, only 10
people a day can buy them, and you have to be subscribed to their
newsletter/spam list, but it's a better shot than you've got going to
Best Buy or something. (Thanks, Steve!)

Interactive and
MSN feel Web
searches are the fastest way to find information, though what they are
searching for varies widely. Whether because of curiosity, boredom or
perhaps the need to find someone from one's past, many people use
search engines to find out about the activities and whereabouts of
friends, family and ex-boyfriends or girlfriends (the practice is
widespread enough that it has acquired a name — "googling" someone
— though the sponsor of the survey, MSN, probably hopes to change
that with its recently revamped search engine). The most popular
person-search of all, however, is users looking up themselves.
You know you just cannot get away from that EgoBot thing ;-)).

NASA prepares to catch a falling star sample: This is
awesome. It's rare that the world of geeks and the world of action
movie stars collides so enjoyably.
To increase understanding of the sun's composition, NASA in 2001
launched the $264 million Genesis mission to collect samples from the
solar wind — electrically charged particles blown out from the
sun at up to 2 million mph. [...]
To prevent contamination and damage to the fragile silicon wafers
that collected the star dust should the Genesis capsule hit the
ground, NASA will try to snare the capsule in midair as it
descends.
