Digital outsells film, but film still
king to some
09/23/2004 06:06 PMMany professional photographers still prefer to use film, thanks to
continued advances in film technology, basic differences in how each
medium works and artistic preference. But digital is gaining ground in
the pro market as each generation of digital SLR camera improves
resolution and features.

Digital Film Revolution
12/29/2003 11:49 PM Movie theaters going digital: Celluloid is becoming a
thing of the past in Hollywood.
After years of Hollywood hype, 2004 could truly be a
watershed year for digital cinema. A recent surge in investment by
theater chains and technology companies means the number of digital
projectors in cinemas will more than double to over 400 in the next 12
months, Screen Digest reports.
I still don't think I've seen a digital film yet.

Xeni Jardin:
If you're in New York today through Sunday, don't miss the 8th annual
edition of digital film festival RESFEST. Organizer Jonathan Wells
says:
There are lots of amazing elements at this year's fest -- among
them,
1) Bushwhacked! - a special program for this election year of great
viral political films from media jammers (The Yes Men, Bryan Boyce,
Michael Moore) around the world, includes some world premieres like
Pinocchio (image shown here) which was too hot for MoveOn.org, and a
"Schoolhouse Rock"-style animation from Eric Henry, Pirates & Emperors
(Or Size Does Matter)
2) Thomas Campbell's SPROUT -- presentation of amazing globetrotting
surf film from acclaimed artist Thomas Campbell will be preceded by a
in theater acoustic performance by the UK-based band Mojave 3 (who
also contributed to the soundtrack).
3) RESFEST Live - Emergency Broadcast Network and Hexstatic -- our
closing night event will feature an audio visual event from VJ
pioneers NYC's EBN and UK's Hexstatic. EBN will showcase their Video
Baby Grand Piano, while Hexstatic will preview work of their
forthcoming Master View DVD album.
Event takes place at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center through
Sunday, September 12.

Xeni Jardin:

If you're in driving or flying distance of Tijuana, Mexico
mid-September, check out the 8th annual IAF Fest: video, film, music,
and multimedia on September 17 and 18. The project's aim: "To create
and maintain alternate spaces for the expression of audiovisual
multidisciplinary art in the Mexico/U.S. border region." So, why
Tijuana? "Because of the... cultural and economic exchange that takes
place daily in the region," say organizers of the
frontera
festival created to "serve as a meeting place for the international
digital art community." Some great DJs, artists, and filmmakers
participating this year -- definitely a don't miss.

Microsoft delays major developer tools
and database releases
03/22/2005 03:33 PMMicrosoft has announced that its next-generation software development
suite, Visual Studio 2005, and its long-awaited new database system,
SQL Server 2005, will now appear in 'the second half' of 2005. This is
seen as a further slippage for the long-awaited products. (The Yukon
version of SQL Server was once anticipated as underpinning the
database-oriented filesystem of Longhorn. Similarly, the 'Orcas'
version of Visual Studio was originally intended to provide tool
support for the Longhorn Windows OS.)
Major products do not usual ship in July or August - so if they have
not arrived by June then September becomes the first available
timepoint. Given the size and history of these products, however,
'anytime before the end of 2005' might be a wiser prediction.
Microsoft has announced revised US pricing for Visual Studio 2005, and
tweaked subscription terms for its Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN)
subscriptions, the channel by which most developers obtain Visual
Studio. With the estimated prices being revised downwards, Microsoft
will also offer MSDN subs with Visual Studio Professional Edition
products at special rates. This is 'to afford small businesses the
same subscription benefits as large enterprises,' it states.

Microsoft Releases Digital Image Suite

Microsoft Releases Digital Image Suite
10
08/10/2004 02:02 PMMicrosoft has released its own image editing/organizing software.
Called "Digital Image Suite 10", the program sells for $129.
To sweeten the deal, you'll get a $30 rebate if you purchase a
digital camera alongside the software - Not a bad price overall
considering what this software offers.
This software isn't wont be targetted at users of Adobe's world famous
Photoshop software. Instead, Microsoft is targeting its software
towards users who rely on Adobe's Photoshop Elements. Photoshop
Elements was created for general / basic use. It's for users without a
need for all the advance features that Photoshop offers. Digital
Image Suite 10 offers all the features of Elements and more; Features
like Microsoft’s Photo Story 2.0 which allows you to create videos
from your photos, support for an auto fix feature (such as color,
exposure, contrast, levels, camera phone auto fix), and an impressive
image management interface.
Adobe has been, for as long as I can remember, the king in the image
editing market. So i applaud a bit of competition there. This software
provides a interesting insight into the demand for non-bundled /
established Microsoft products, and is perhaps one of the few examples
where Microsoft are actually taking on a competitor on the basis of
quality.
