Laptop Theft
03/29/2005 06:33 AMThe personal details of almost 100,000 University of California
students have been stolen - and it's all because one laptop was taken
from one of the college's campuses. AP
reports
that the theft actually took place on March 11, but officials had
waited until now to release details in the hope that the thief might
be caught. That hasn't happened, raising fears of identity theft.
The laptop was stolen from UC Berkeley, wihch now plans to tell all
the people affected - some 98,369, including current alumni, past
applicants and graduate students - to check credit reports. However,
the university's Maria Felde said there was no indication any of the
data had been used illegally.
"The campus really regrets this happened and is taking steps to
strengthen security in the future," Felde told AP. The university
has set up a hotline on 1-800-372-5110, as well as a
website to answer questions about the theft. It
says: "At this time the campus has no evidence that personal data
were actually retrieved or misused. However, in accordance with state
law, UC Berkeley officials are making every reasonable effort to
notify by mail and e-mail all 98,369 individuals whose names and
Social Security numbers were on the computer and, as a precaution,
suggest they consider placing a fraud alert on their credit reporting
accounts."

LexisNexis acknowledges more ID theft on
310,000 people
04/13/2005 04:36 AMLexisNexis, which compiles and sells personal and financial data on
U.S. consumers, said Tuesday that personal information on 310,000
people nationwide may have been stolen. That number is nearly 10 times
higher than the figure LexisNexis disclosed last month when it first
reported that its databases had been breached. LexisNexis said in
March that 32,000 people had been potentially affected by the
breaches.
Today's disclosure comes just after an investigation by Reed Elsevier
determined that its databases had been fraudulently breached 59 times
using stolen passwords. The thieves, who obtained information
including addresses and Social Security numbers, did not hack into the
computer system and although they were able to get ahold of sensitive
password information, the company says it is not certain how the
passwords were acquired.

Microsoft’s PUMA to prevent theft of
audio data
03/14/2005 05:46 PMAt the end of April at the WinHEC 2005 developers´ conference
Microsoft intends to furnish further details on the copy protection
functions of the successor to Windows XP Longhorn, which is planned
for 2006.
The preliminary WinHEC 2005 Master List of Tracks and Sessions under
the heading Media Advances for the Windows PC Architecture lists a
number of events dealing with the form of control of use known as
Digital Rights Management (DRM). One of these track sessions will, for
instance, be concerned with the Protected Media Path (PMP), which is
to be established for media data in Longhorn PCs. A Protected
Environment (PE), whilst providing a Protected Video Path (PVP) and
Protected User Mode Audio (PUMA), will enforce defined requirements on
hardware drivers (for TV or graphics cards, say). These channels are
to be proof against data theft by rogue software. PUMA runs in the PE,
with the PVP even encrypting data transfer to the graphics card over
the PCI Express Port (AES 128). A PC´s outlets - in the case of video
signals the outlet of the graphics card - are also integrated into the
output protection management concept (OPM). Here Microsoft mentions
known output protection schemes such as HDCP, Macrovision or CGMS-A,
but also speaks of artificial resolution constrictors. According to
Microsoft "significant hardware features must be implemented in
graphics chips for Windows Longhorn to support PVP and OPM, with
additional larger implications for the drivers." The longer term
project PAP is to introduce audio encryption all the way to the audio
codec chips.
