Festival de
Cannes update:
The new Michael Moore movie received a 18 minutes long
st
anding ovation , a couple of days ago, which was already
meaningful to him and his film crew.
Tonight Moore also received the prestigious
Palme
D'Or prize, making sure the film will receive an adequate
distribution in the United States.
His speech was quite powerful, beginning with him visibly stunned,
looking at Quentin Tarantino (who was in tears) in disbelief, saying
“What
have you done? I’m completely overwhelmed by this. Merci”.

08/27/2004 02:08 PMCyberspace is buzzin’ tonight over the
release of the Reiser4 filesystem,
which seems to be pretty hot stuff. I was looking at their
benchmarks page and was
charmed to see an appearance by
Bonnie++, a direct
descendent of the original Bonnie
mentioned here
just the other day. The benchmarks suggest that on a good computer
with a modern filesystem, you can expect to get 130 or so random
seeks/second in 1G of data, 105 in 3G. That’s not bad... in fact
it’s
three or four times faster than the best results
I was able to get in 1990
(search for “asymptotically”). Check out the computers I ran that
on, they’re museum pieces. Per Moore’s law, in fourteen years the
CPUs ought to have sped up by a factor of 2
14/1.5=645 or
so. Yep, one of them was a 4MHz 386, 4MHz×645=2.58GHz, damn that
Moore is smart. I happen to remember that of the original computers I
benchmarked, the biggest had 64M of memory. If you applied the same
multiplier (645) to the memory, you’d get 4.1G, quite a reasonable
figure for a big modern Unix box. I think the lesson is obvious: for
high-performance applications, keep your data away from those filthy
disks, no matter what filesystem, use memory.

The war is bad, Bush is a bad president, probably the worst of
our lives. I've heard about the seven minutes of video of Bush
paralyzed after the second plane hit the WTC on 9/11. Sounds powerful.
Even right-wingers have to admit that a President should be someone
who's mobilized by a crisis, not frozen.
So often people overstate their case. That's Moore's mistake.
When you overstate, you lose people with minds. One of the greatest
things about my talk
about Moore yesterday is that I heard from right-wingers with minds.
What a relief to find out they're not all like Limbaugh or O'Reilly.
Seriously.
There's hope for this country yet.

The activist,
author and director told the Sunday Herald that, as long as pirated
copies of his film were not being sold, he had no problem with it
being downloaded. "I don't agree with the copyright laws and I don't
have a problem with people downloading the movie and sharing it with
people as long as they're not trying to make a profit off my labour. I
would oppose that," he said. "I do well enough already and I made this
film because I want the world, to change. The more people who see it
the better, so I'm happy this is happening."
Interesting
quote, but as Xeni points out, after the box office hit in the US, he
can sort of afford to say that. If he felt this way, it would have
been cool if he had put a
Creative Commons license on
it. Still, I think this is better than nothing. Xeni also points out
the film's distributor is clearly against "sharing" of the film on the
Internet.

Cory Doctorow:
USAToday has hired Michael Moore to cover the Republican National
Convention:
Hanging out around the convention, I've encountered a number of the
Republican faithful who aren't delegates. They warm up to me when they
don't find horns or a tail. Talking to them, I discover they're like
many people who call themselves Republicans but aren't really
Republicans. At least not in the radical-right way that George W.
Bush, Dick Cheney, John Ashcroft and Co. have defined Republicans.
I asked one man who told me he was a "proud Republican," "Do you think
we need strong laws to protect our air and water?"
"Well, sure," he said. "Who doesn't?"
I asked whether women should have equal rights, including the same pay
as men.
"Absolutely," he replied.
"Would you discriminate against someone because he or she is gay?"
"Um, no." The pause — I get that a lot when I ask this question
— is usually because the average good-hearted person instantly
thinks about a gay family member or friend.

06/22/2004 12:39 PMJack Shafer (Slate): Libel Suit 9/11: Michael
Moore's hysterical, empty threats. Of course, multimillionaire
Moore can always punish his critics financially by filing silly
lawsuits that require them to spend huge sums to be dismissed as
frivolous. But Moore is not likely to want that sort of publicity and
heartache—it's as much a drag to sue as it is to be sued. And a
man with his sort of assets isn't likely to tempt a countersuit by the
defendant when the case is tossed out. Moore isn't likely to find a
more severe appraisal of his film and his work than this Slate piece
by Christopher Hitchens. Read it, Mr. Moore. We invite your
suit.

'9/11': Just the facts?. The wise French director Godard once
said, "The way to criticize a film is to make another film." That
there is not a pro-Bush documentary available right now I am powerless
to explain. Surely, however, the Republican National Convention will
open with such a documentary, which will position Bush comfortably
between Ronald Reagan and God. The Democratic convention will have a
wondrous film about John Kerry. Anyone who thinks one of these
documentaries is "presenting facts objectively without editorializing"
should look at the other one.
