It’s Not Hip to Be Square – Widescreen
Notebooks Fastest Growing Segment in
Retail Notebook Sales -Widescreen

notebook sales-
08/01/2004 03:30 AM
According to a recent study by Current Analysis, unit sales of notebooks equipped with a widescreen 15.4-inch display have steadily continued to climb throughout the first half of 2004. As of June 30, the widescreen market accounted for 48% of all notebooks sold, compared to only 15% in December 2003. The growth represents the highest share yet for the widescreen models since its introduction in the spring of 2003 and demonstrates widescreen systems are selling in greater numbers than its traditional square counterparts. New Safari builds

New Safari builds 03/13/2003 10:16 AM
Before Safari build 60 was released I saw all build 58, 59 and a bunch of earlier builds in my logs, mostly from apple.com IPs. $ grep Safari * | perl -pe 's/.*(AppleWeb.*)/$1/' | sort -u | tail -1 AppleWebKit/62 (like Gecko) Safari/62" Amusingly it's not from 17.* IP addresses (Apple), or even IPs that looks like they are from California. ThinkSecret posted a report about build 62 saying that it has tabs (yay). Maybe it leaked? ObSafari: Neato trick....

LG builds "smart washer"

LG builds "smart washer" 09/17/2004 12:40 PM
Every now and then, I come across some news that is just plain odd. This would have to be one of those stories.

If the military can build a missile that can fly through your window and build satellites that can read your license plate... why can't you get a washing machine that helps tell you how best to wash those silk PJs? Well, now you can.

A new washing machine developed by the Dai Nippon Printing Company can read special smart tags on clothing and instruct the user the best method with which to wash the clothes. Not only that, but the LG-built unit can keep track of how many times a particular item has been washed, what material it is made out of, and can even send an email or SMS when your load of laundry is complete.

Just what will they think of next?
(My guess is probably a smart dryer.)

Microsoft builds a better Bit Torrent

Microsoft builds a better Bit Torrent 06/17/2005 03:18 PM
Researchers at Microsoft's computer science lab in Cambridge have developed a peer-to-peer filesharing system that they say overcomes the scheduling problems associated with existing distribution protocols such as Bit Torrent.

The researchers claim download times are between 20-30 per cent faster, using their network coding approach, than on systems that only code at the server, and between 200 and 300 per cent faster than distributing un-encoded information.

There is a wealth of information available on the Internet and in separate repositories like university library databases. It would save time to be able to search all digital resources using one interface. Researchers from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China have come up with a distributed information retrieval system that promises to help. The system could eventually become part of the Internet infrastructure as an extension of the domain name service. This has been added to Deep Web Research Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.
