LED Bike Spoke Messages

LED Bike Spoke Messages 03/31/2005 07:08 PM

hokey_spokeys.jpgThis is nearly too geeky, even for us: Hokey Spokes make up a set of LED blades that attach to your bicycle's spokes and spell out words and poor images while you ride about town, keenly aware of precicely how idiotic they make you look. The perfect compliment for your favorite pair of bicycle shorts, the blades communicate with each other using infrared and are actually programmed with your Palm, so you can make changes while on the run. I wouldn't be surprised if an entrepreneuring bike courier in New York started selling his spoke space for ads, really. Actually, for only $30-$40, the images they can create look pretty damn cool. On a computer screen. And not in "real life".

Bike Tree Stores Your Bike Safely

Bike Tree Stores Your Bike Safely 03/19/2005 02:45 AM

bike_tree_under.jpgDo you remember the last time you locked your bike at a public post and took the seat, only to come back two hours later and find both the wheels have also been removed? (At least your Kryptonite was left intact!) The Bike Tree is the perfect solution for your city or school. Simply swipe your smart card, enter your PIN and watch as your bike is hoisted up into the glass canopy, filling out a bike rain forest of sorts. Perfect for bike sharing or rental programs, the system was first installed in Geneva and is powered by solar power, but your bike is still accessible 24/7. (Thanks, Luke!)

The Spoke

The Spoke 12/03/2003 02:30 PM
The Spoke

http://www.thespoke.net

Microsoft Corp. has quietly launched a Web logging, or blogging, service targeted at tech-savvy people in their teens and 20s, but the service is apparently open to anybody. The service is called TheSpoke and is part of Microsoft's Academic Developer initiative, a Microsoft spokesman said Tuesday. The site was created by Singapore-based marketing services company Earth9 Pte. Ltd. and went live last week, said a spokesman for Smooth Fusion Inc., the Lubbock, Texas, company that hosts TheSpoke.net for Microsoft. Microsoft's academic developer initiative is focused on building a community of students interested in software development, the Microsoft spokesman said. TheSpoke is in a test phase and more features will be added, he said, adding that the site is not intended to be competition for blogging services such as Google Inc.'s Blogger.

TheSpoke looks to be more of a mass-market effort. The first members, dubbed Hubbers, for the site were recruited with postings on Web sites for gamers. In one such recruitment posting, apparently from the team setting up TheSpoke, the call to join goes out to any opinionated young person wanting to blog about technology and gaming. "TheSpoke is an online community for young leaders that are tech savvy and opinionated. TheSpoke provides tools to collaborate, discuss and debate the future of technology," said the recruitment posting, published Nov. 8 on an Xbox enthusiast Web site. Joe Wilcox, a Washington, D.C.-based Jupiter Research senior analyst, doesn't see TheSpoke as a threat to other blog services, but rather as a tool for Microsoft to win support from young software developers who might otherwise choose to work on projects that compete with Microsoft.

i have spoke with the tongue of angels

i have spoke with the tongue of angels 02/01/2005 09:53 PM

They say that when you have an audition, you have to walk in there like you don't give a shit. You walk in there like you don't give a shit, and you walk out with the part, because if you don't give a shit, that's when they want you.

But you've read the script, and it is good. So good, in fact, you fall in love with it. You fall madly, passionately, crazy in love with the script, and you'll do anything to be one of the people chosen to bring the script to life.

You think about it all the time. You wake up in the middle of the night, imagining what it would be like to spend ten weeks on location or four seasons on the set. You get lost on your way to the post office, because you're wondering who your competition is. You can't eat, you can't sleep, you can't focus on anything else . . . you are in love, after all.

In the days before your audition, you do everything you can to be ready. First, you get to know your character. If you're lucky, he's a guy you know. Maybe he's even you. Not the current you, usually, but still You. A younger you, a more passionate you, a more idealistic you; the You who you were before you fell in love with too many scripts and had your heart broken too many times to count . . . the you who was incapable of walking in there like you didn't give a shit, because it felt so good to be in love. Then you learn your lines. You spend hours in your house or your apartment reading them out loud, scaring your dogs, worrying your neighbors, annoying your roommates who are sick to death of hearing about The Script. They've heard it all before, and you've made an unspoken pact among you: you don't tell them how crushed you are when you don't get the job, and they pretend not to notice how you wear the same clothes and drink heavily for five days after you get The Call.

The day of the audition finally comes. Your first date. Your big date. Your only date. You spend too much time putting yourself together. You carefully choose your clothes and style your hair a minimum of three different times. Maybe you spray on some cologne, because it makes you feel attractive. Maybe.

You drive to the studio, and hope your voice doesn't break when you tell the guard that you're going to Bungalow 15. You park, walk across the lot, and your palms sweat when you sign in. You wait for what seems like an eternity, surrounded by actors who are younger, taller, better looking than you. Actors who clearly don't give a shit because they don't have to. You know that they don't love The Script like you do, haven't put in the time that you have . . . but it doesn't matter. You've been here before and you'll be here again, long after they've left for location.

Your heart throbs in your chest when they call your name. You smile, take a deep breath, and stand up.

And then you walk into the room, and you're supposed to act like you don't give a shit.

Yeah. Right.

I hadn't even heard about this. Looks interesting! Anyone know anything about this? Please contact me.

Sinclair's Folding A-Bike

Sinclair's Folding A-Bike 07/08/2004 08:44 AM

a-bike.jpg imageSir Clive Sinclair, inventor of the pocket calculator and the nigh-on-legendary Sinclair personal computer, has unveiled a new, folding bicycle design he's calling the 'A-Bike.' To be launched in 2005, the 12-pound bike can be folded and unfolded in around 20 seconds and rides on tiny, air-filled tires. The idea is (if it weren't obvious) to provide a cheapish alternative to full-sized bikes that can be folded up and taken with you wherever you go, although the $300 price is considerable more than it would cost to purchase a capable, if basic, street bicycle and chain. Still, I am intrigued. Portable urban transportation is one of my new pet pastimes, and the A-bike would be much easier to recharge than the electric scooters I've been eyeing (they sell pizza almost everywhere). (Thanks, Tim!)

The long bike ride

The long bike ride 08/03/2004 02:44 PM
The Long Bike Ride is a cross-country charity ride (which is short of its goal, kick in a few bucks) by two guys that have never ridden a bike more than 15 miles in one sitting. They're already halfway done, having ridden 50-75 miles everyday for the past couple months, probably thanks to riding high-end ultralight recumbent bikes. Their tour updates are extensive and looking at the photos they look quite relaxed. Then I realized if you're getting your 50-75 miles done in about 4 hours, the rest of the time you can just party! party! party! Still, a pretty amazing feat to do this entire route, especially considering their lack of experience and training.

digital_dirt-bike.jpg imageThe Bronze medalist in the "Business & Industrial Products" category of the IDEA 2004 awards, the Digital Dirt bike is an all-in-one communications station, driven by a single technician from village to village to deliver news, weather forecasts, school lessons, and needed treatments for common diseases. It's currently being put to use throughout Andra Pradesh, India. It's basically just a notebook, a printer, camera, satellite phone, and sunshade all mounted together, but taken as a whole it's definitely greater than the sum of its parts. It's like Broadband-Over-Gasoline.

06/05/2004 02:44 AM

As I was walking home this evening, a little girl was riding her bike in the middle of the street. She still had the training wheels on as she wobbled and struggled to peddle. It reminded me of when I was little and how badly I wanted a bicycle but couldn't get one. My parents wouldn't let me have a bike until I was 12; my mom was too afraid I'd hurt myself. I'd pass the bike section in the store and just look, having given up asking my parents about it long ago. I eventually did get one after much pleading and begging. Amazingly, getting my driver's license at 16 and the subsequent borrowing of the family car passed without incident.

That little girl's name was Nigritude Ultramarine. Critical IP still sucks. Andy Pressman is a talentless hack. I am part Jew.

Panasonic's Folding Electric Bike 03/23/2005 04:53 AM

panasonic_bike.jpg imagePanasonic has introduced a "folding" electric bicycle. Called the "Off Time," the bike can be folded to fit inside of a car's trunk, go with you on the train, or stashed under your bed for when you need to make a quick getaway. Its lithium-ion battery can drive for about two and a half hours, but I presume that even if it runs out, you can still pedal it like a normal bike.
