Apple has added the iPod Camera Connector, which it announced last month, to its online store. Priced at $29, the camera connector ships in one to three weeks and is compatible with iPod photo (30/40/60GB). It requires iPod software v1.1. Apple says the connector provides a fast and easy way to transfer photos from a digital camera to an iPod photo.

iPod Camera Connector Details 03/23/2005 05:36 PM

iPodlounge has details about the iPod Camera Connector and how photographers should expect the device to work with their other gear.

Apple said that most cameras with USB connectivity can be used with the iPod Camera Connector, and must support either the PTP, Type 4 (Normal), or Mass Storage protocol.
So that's good, and means most flash memory card readers should work with the iPod, but check out this little nugget:
"While an iPod photo with an attached iPod Camera Connector may recognize another iPod if you connect it, transferring photos from one iPod to another is not supported."
Someone build be an iPod-to-iPod music transfer software right now.

Update: Kirk Eberle writes:

How about a PSP to an iPod via Camera Connector? Do you think one could transfer PSP compatible videos/photos between the two? That would be a nice use of the extra GBs left on one's iPod, and make it unnecessary to buy a largely spaced and pricey memStick Duo. One could settle for a moderately priced 512 stick, and STILL have GBs of portable PSP entertainment!

iPod Camera Connector Reviewed (Verdict:
Good Enough, Barely)
04/01/2005 09:28 AM

ipcc_rev.jpgiPodlounge reviews the official Apple iPod Camera Connector, the little clip-on bit that makes direct transference of pictures from your camera to your iPod photo. It's far from perfect, but it at least fixes the most glaring flaw of the iPod photo: the ability to copy pictures directly to your iPod and then view them, all without touching a computer. It's still slow, though, like the other media readers, and using the iPod like a portable data drive sucks down a lot of power quickly, too. For only $30, though, it's probably a no-brainer if you already have the iPod photo.

On the other hand, it doesn't work at all with previous generation iPods, so if you just want a dumb storage device with no display capability, you'll have to pick up something from Belkin (or similar).

iPod photo Review: 9 out of 10 03/29/2005 01:43 PM
CNET Editors give the new iPod photo a 9 out of 10 rating, writing, “Thanks to a much lower price and a new, photographer-friendly feature, the latest version of the iPod Photo should get more than its share of looks. Offering a full-color, 16-bit screen as well as 30GB and 60GB capacities, the iPod Photo displays photos and album art in an interface that’s undeniably Apple. From the ease with which one loads photos on to the device to the browsing of thumbnails and images on the iPod itself, the overall experience is positive and warm.” [Mar 28, 2005]

iPod mini Review: 8.7 out of 10 03/22/2005 03:43 PM
Reviewing the second generation iPod mini, CNET editors gave it an 8.7 out of 10 rating, stating “The iPod brand has become synonymous with excellent portable audio players, and the second-generation Apple iPod mini carries on the tradition with its fashionable, intelligent design. Apple has made precious few (but all necessary) updates to its stylish microdrive player, which is a good thing since it was already a winner.” [Mar 21, 2005]

Waterfield Bags launched a SleeveCase designed specifically for the Mac Mini within weeks of the official Apple announcement. In its default configuration as I received it, the SleeveCase is merely what it claims to be, a case into which a Mac Mini will fit. However, Waterfield offers a configuration with a detachable shoulder strap. (read the review) This makes it very comparable to the eM2 bag we reviewed a few weeks ago...

Belkin TuneDok iPod Car Holder Review

Belkin TuneDok iPod Car Holder Review 06/11/2004 08:17 AM

dockconns.jpg imageFar be it from me to begrudge anyone the opportunity to tear apart a ridiculous consumer product, but no matter what the guys at Whining Dog say, I think this Belkin TuneDok iPod holder is pretty clever. It's basically just a simple travel holder for your iPod, doesn't do anything terribly fancy, or electronic, even, but it does have the good graces to slip comfortably into any available cupholder you have in your car, putting your iPod at a more comfortable eye-level (hopefully) and saving it from unsightly scratches.

You might say the $40 price tag sort isn't in line with its overall usefulness, and you'd be right, but when these things invariably drop to $9.98 at your local Best Buy, it's not going to look like such a rip off.

Macworld review: iPod Voice Recorders

Macworld review: iPod Voice Recorders 08/27/2004 02:02 PM
Until recently, iPods could receive information only from a computer -- contacts, calendars, and MP3 files all had to be imported. Now the iPod can be used as a recording device, too, for directly storing and playing back audio. You're not going to want to record your band's demo on your iPod, but if you want to capture close-range interviews or voice memos, the Belkin Voice Recorder for iPod and the Griffin Technology iTalk iPod Voice Recorder can get the job done. In the end, though, the Griffin is our pick, thanks to its better sound quality.

Sony VAIO Pocket Review, iPod Comparison

Sony VAIO Pocket Review, iPod Comparison 06/09/2004 09:10 AM

pocket_vs_ipod.jpg imageIf you want to stumble through the Babelfish translation, AV Watch Japan has a review of the Sony VAIO Pocket, the hard disk-based music player that's getting the most buzz as Sony's attempt to create an iPod-killer. Among other things, they compare sizes (!), and really that battery nodule on the back of the VAIO Pocket does it a disservice in pictures -- it's not nearly as big as it seems. Of course, the chink in the VAIO Pocket's armor is its inability to play any format but Sony's proprietary ATRAC3, meaning every song you want to copy to the VAIO Pocket has to be converted. 20GB of conversion is going to be sucky, but manageable; it's really just the principle of the thing (even Apple, head up their AAC, lets the iPod play MP3).
