Wearing John Malkovich: actor launches
men's clothing line
03/31/2005 05:48 PM

Xeni Jardin: Snip from Theater News item:

John Malkovich, the renowned stage and screen actor, is also the designer of the Uncle Kimono clothing line -- and he will showcase his autumn/winter 2005-2006 men's wear collection at a trunk sale to be held at The Performing Garage (33 Wooster Street) in SoHo on Saturday, April 16, from 10am to 5pm. A percentage of the proceeds will benefit The Wooster Group.

(...) According to Malkovich, "Uncle Kimono is a men's wear collection that resonates with the late 1950s Californian beach boys, some Palm Springs Rat Pack, a touch of lounge lizard, and a recollection of a Swiss banker who's been let go."

A few months ago I was out having sushi with some pals in West Hollywood, and a very dapper Mr. Malkovich sat down at an adjacent table with friends. He was dressed in an extremely funky-fresh outfit, so this news comes as no surprise. He is one stylin' guy. Link to news report, and here is John Malkovich's website. Site also includes some pretty cool t-shirts, like the one shown above, but yow -- they're $70 a pop. (via blogging.la)

Spammer Launches Clothing Line?

Spammer Launches Clothing Line? 04/19/2004 05:45 PM
In what seems like it should be a late April Fool's joke, well known spammer Scott Richter seems to have changed his tune a bit on claiming that his company is in the permission marketing, rather than spamming, business. After getting accused by various companies and the Attorney General of New York of being one of the biggest spammers out there, Richter has decided to launch his own brand of "SpamKing" clothing. Try not to gag as you read about the clothes (targeting "the hip-hop, grunge and skateboarding crowds") will include such catchy phrases as "Just Opt Out!" and "Click it!" Not surprisingly, he plans to spam people like crazy to promote the clothing. In the meantime, the article notes (more seriously) that Richter also plans to file lawsuits against anti-spam groups for stopping his "legitimate" messages. Considering that previous lawsuits like this haven't gone very far, it's likely that any lawsuit he files will also be an annoying waste of time for anti-spam groups (just like spam itself).

Are Catholic Schools viewed as the backbone of the Catholic Church or are they money losing subsidiaries? Everyday in the newspaper are accounts of scores of Catholic Schools closing their doors. It isn’t that Catholics don’t prefer a Catholic education for their children. It isn’t that the performance of Catholic Schools is disappointing. It comes down to one overriding issue: lack of resources. [PRWEB Apr 10, 2005]

Smart Clothing

Smart Clothing 08/09/2004 11:08 AM

francetelecom5.jpg imageDavid Pescovitz has a nice round-up of the current state of 'smart clothes,' or "computer couture" as he's calling it - textiles that do fun or intelligent or useful things, like dispense medicines, keep themselves clean, and display Pac-Man ghosts via Bluetooth. We've talked about a lot of this stuff before, but it's still neat to see them all sort of next to each other. Too bad smart fabrics have been just on the cusp of production for years and years. I'd be happy with just a shirt I could change the logo on.

Radio Interview with John Brady Kiesling
and John H. Brown
03/15/2003 06:05 AM
KALW in San Francisco did an hour long radio interview with John Brady Kiesling and John H. Brown, the American Foreign Service officers who resigned over Bush's Iraq policy. Both are impressive speakers, and Kiesling is as articulate and as convincing as his letter:

If we can't convince our historical allies that this is a good thing to do, there is no way we are going to be able to convince the Arab world. People have to take a stand. War may be inevitable, but we need to do what we can to keep our consciences clean. There is a policy to make America safer, but this is not it. "America is still the safest country in the world. The administration is trying to scare people with this talk about terror and duct tape. We should use our safety and prosperity and our strength to do good and we can do good."

Brown said his resignation was "in part a result of Andrew Card's comment, 'Never launch a product in August.' War is not a product." I learned a lot from listening to it. Recommended. Requires Real Player.

It looks like Microsoft (MSFT:Nasdaq - news - research) has cried wolf too many times. Investors shrugged off the software behemoth's conservative outlook for 2005, bidding up the stock Friday in the wake of the firm's strong top- and bottom-line third-quarter results. After all, many noted, Microsoft gave similarly conservative guidance a year ago -- only to prove itself wrong with revenue growth on track to reach an impressive 13% this year. On Friday, Microsoft shares jumped $1.59, or 6.1%, to $27.54 with more than 255 million shares changing hands -- about four times its average daily volume.

Sweaty men like Men's Health

Sweaty men like Men's Health 06/24/2005 06:18 PM
David Pescovitz: A new study reports that the smell of male underarm funk makes men dig Men's Health magazine. In experiments run by researchers from the University of Ulster and University of Vienna, male and female subjects wore masks sprayed with either androstenol--a pheromone in men's underarm sweat--or a "control solvent." They were then shown issues of Allure, National Geographic, and Men's Health magazine. From New Scientist:
The male participants exposed to androstenol rated Men’s Health as significantly more masculine and more appealing compared with the control group. They also had a higher tendency to report that they might buy the magazine. Women appeared to be completely unaffected by the pheromone...

“This opens up the possibility of using odours to give specific emotional meaning to products – and creates ethical issues about whether this should be done if they are used at imperceptible levels,” (says University of Ulster professor Michael Kirk-Smith).
