Reboot 08/01/2004 04:36 PM

"If there's one adjective to describe a brand new 15″ Powerbook, 'slow' should not be it." And so, with those words of wisdom from an Apple tech, I rebuilt my 2-month old system this weekend.

When Your Computer Will Reboot For You

When Your Computer Will Reboot For You 07/12/2004 04:24 AM
Self-healing or autonomic computing concepts aren't new. Mostly popularized by IBM starting a few years ago, research has continued in many different places in both the public and private sectors. In fact, the research efforts are increasing rapidly as people realize just how expensive computer failures are. While most efforts are still quite early on, it's clear that, rather than just trying to prevent computer problems altogether, a growing number of people are coming to terms with the fact that it's nearly impossible to build a computer system that won't have something go wrong. Thus, it may be a much more efficient route to build systems that quickly correct themselves, rather than those that never have any problems at all.

fallback-reboot 0.999 (Default branch) 03/27/2005 03:27 AM
fallback-reboot is a last resort, when you need to remotely reboot a computer. It attempts to maximize its ability to get the job done by completely avoiding touching the hard disk; it opens no files, and it locks itself into memory to avoid swapping/paging. It also does not fork or exec. It includes optional cryptography.
Changes:
This release was ported to FreeBSD 5.4 Beta 1. The fallback- reboot-client can not only accept input from a TTY as before, but now also from a pipe or file.

An onslaught of software updates and patches can prove frustrating for any systems administrator. But this deluge may be particularly vexing for those running Microsoft Windows systems, which often must be rebooted after a patch is installed, unlike Linux or Unix. Fortunately, the software giant is beginning to overcome that Achilles' heel.

Ready for Some Downtime?

Ready for Some Downtime? 04/20/2004 04:55 PM

A researcher in Milwaukee has discovered a nasty exploit of the TCP protocol that could give hackers a way to knock out entire segments of the Internet's backbones.

The vulnerability was discovered by a Paul "Tony" Watson, a computer researcher in Milwaukee, who found a way to remotely reset network connections via a denial-of-service (DoS) attack. The flaw affects both TCP and BGP (Border Gateway Protocol). BGP needs a persistent TCP connection between peers in order to route packets, so if the routers are reset, BGP goes into hibernation and traffic stops.

Sequence numbers in the packet headers usually make this exploit infeasible, but Tony has apparently figured out a way to guess the right sequence numbers in 4 tries. The nasty part is that the exploit is possible due to the design of TCP itself, not just some broken software. This one could be ugly.
