04/23/2004 12:15 AMReview: We check out the largest desktop hard drive on the
market today. The 400GB Deskstar is roomy, fast, and a marvel of
modern engineering. It's not a breakthrough, though--just a new spin
on existing tech.

Hitachi's New Deskstar 7K500 Reaches 500
Gigs.
03/30/2005 04:59 PMHitachi’s new Deskstar 7K500 drive is the first desktop hard
drive to reach 500 GB in size and one of the first to use the speedy
new SATA II interface. You’ll be able to buy it with the older
ATA interface for about $500 MSRP, or with the new SATA II interface
for about $520 MSRP. It was reported to be ready for shipment in the
2nd quarter of this year. PC World has a big article on the tech behind the
drive and the interface.
The drive uses longitudinal recording, which writes data tracks
in concentric circles using particles magnetized horizontally on the
surface of the disk. Hard-drive vendors may be able to squeeze as much
as 250GB per platter out of longitudinal recording (current drives fit
from 100GB to 133GB on each platter). Desktop drive capacity will top
out at around 1 terabyte by late 2006, before running into
technological problems in maintaining data stability. To get
beyond such limitations, drive makers are moving to perpendicular
recording, which magnetizes the particles vertically. Such drives
should appear in desktops sometime in 2007, predicts John Buttress,
research manager for hard disks at research firm IDC. And you won't
need a new motherboard or a new adapter card to use the
drives.

01/05/2005 06:58 PMHitachi Ltd. said yesterday that it is seeking to push the limits of
data storage with smaller stamp-size disks for handheld gadgets and
vastly higher-capacity drives that can store up to a half-terabyte of
data.

03/30/2005 09:51 AMHitachi's new Deskstar 7K500 drive marks several milestones in the
storage industry: It's the first desktop hard drive to reach 500GB and
one of the first to use the speedy new SATA II interface. In terms of
how it stores data, though, the Deskstar may be among the last of its
kind, as drive manufacturers begin to approach the limits of how
densely they can pack data using today's standard recording
technology.
Demand for greater capacity continues to rise due in large part to a
growing need for music and video storage on PCs and consumer
electronics devices. To meet that need, storage vendors are turning to
new recording technologies. The first of these, perpendicular
recording, will debut from Toshiba this year.

HP's 500GB Personal Media Drive Concept
06/09/2004 09:10 AM
BusinessWeek details HP's Personal Media Drive (PMD) concept,
essentially their rumblings about moving into the large, personal hard
drive space in which Mirra and other companies currently reside. Since
the PMD is really just a big ol' 500GB hard drive, it's admirable that
writer Alex Salkever can get as much mileage out of HP casual musings,
but chasing down a few possible future storage technology tangents is
always a good way to pad out a story. Way to milk 'em, champ.
Also, if I'm not mistaken, these pics from DigiTimes (including
this one showing what I think is the PMD along with some other concept
products) are from the same Windows Hardware Engineering conference
where HP showcased the PMD, as well as that knobby 'Troy' personal
communications console (which doesn't look half as bad integrated into
a desktop environment as it did with the laptop).

reports that Hitachi's UK researchers have also developed a
complimentary technology to the "Get Perpendicular" concept they're
touting for increasing storage capacity (areal density) on hard
drives. Tunneling anisotropic magentoresistance (which earns you a
triple word score) takes advantage of a side effect of manganese
doping. In less syllabic terms, it lets them shrink the drive head to
a few tens of nanometers, which will work nicely with the newly
perpendicular bits they'll be reading.

external hard drives incorporate two mechanism inside along with
hardware support for RAID level 0, or striping, a technique which
enables the two drives to read and write data simultaneously, thus
improving data transfer rates compared to a single mechanism. The
enclosure is made of aluminum. System requirements call for Mac OS X
v10.2.5 or higher for FireWire 800 speeds, Mac OS 9.1 or higher for
FireWire 400 speeds. Pricing for the DualDisk 320 and 500 is US$429

Memory Reading Hard Drive
06/30/2004 12:37 PM
The Vosonic X'S-Drive Pro VP 300 is 40GB external
hard drive that is clunky, cheap-looking, has a crappy text-only
integrated screen, plays MP3s, but not WMA, AAC, or OGG Vorbis, and
can only read from one card from its card reader at a time. So why
would any photographer want it? Because it's cheap, it does the
primary job it was designed to do (act as remote backup for memory
cards), and can accept as many additional 2.5-inch laptop hard drives
as you want to swap into it, meaning that all other things aside, you
can purchase this single $335 drive and continue to upgrade it for
only the price of additional hard drives.

JVC's Mystery Hard Drive Camcorders
Revealed: They're Hard Drive Camcorders
09/14/2004 11:18 AM
Oops, I almost forgot about these new cameras
announced from JVC - the ones they've been hyping up to no end as
their big "mystery product." Basically, they're camcorders with hard
drives in them - a 4GB microdrive, to be exact. They look pretty cool
and everything, but they're really most interesting because they are
the first consumer camcorder with a built-in hard drive, not because
they do anything particularly unique. That being said, I fully support
this idea, and think most consumer recording technology should move to
hard drives as soon as possible (I'll be waiting until you can get
something with a bigger hard drive than 4GB for less than $1,500,
though).
Both models (the GZ-MC100 and the GZ-MC200) can record up to 9Mbps
in MPEG2, though, which is DVD quality.

mass-producing a 60GB, 1.8-inch hard-disk drive before the end of the
year, it said Wednesday. Such drives are commonly used in digital
music players and sub-notebook computers. The new drive offers a
50-percent improvement in storage space over Toshiba's current highest
capacity 1.8-inch hard-disk drive yet manages this without being
physically larger. The major factor that contributed to this increase
was an advancement made in a thin-film technology used for both the
head and platter, said Midori Suzuki, a spokeswoman for Toshiba in
Tokyo.
