China Telecom to Deploy Broadband
Wireless
01/22/2004 02:13 AMWi-LAN said that China Telecom is using its gear to deploy a broadband
wireless network in Tianjin: China Telecom will use unlicensed
frequencies and looks at this deployment as a test before potentially
building similar networks in other regions. The point-to-multipoint
network can be used to supply data and voice. Wi-LAN uses proprietary
technology based on OFDM but says it's the same technology that makes
up the 802.16 standard. That standard is backed by the WiMAX Forum,
which hasn't started certifying products yet. The press release
doesn't seem to be online yet but may be available here eventually....

12/03/2003 06:08 PMAnd in a similar vein, Dottocomu points us towards an article about
Calypso Wireless and how they've just sealed a deal to provide China
Telecom with combination GSM/WiFi cellphones. The handsets in question
are undoubtedly Calypso's C1250i, which you may recall them unveiling
to some skepticism back in May, and from the looks of it, China
Telecom will be building out a network of WiFi hotspots for the phones
to access for Voice over IP and video phone calls. Though they have
yet to demonstrate it, Calypso is promising that switching between
cellular and WiFi networks will be "seamless" (we'll believe it when
we see it). To get around the problem of there not being enough WiFi
hotspots to make calls from, Calypso says there will be a program of
rebates for phone subscribers who open up their wireless access points
to wireless Voice over IP phone calls. Read...

computers as the most popular way for Chinese consumers to use the
Internet within this decade. WAP allows mobile phone users to access
the Internet by compensating for the smaller memory size of current
phones and for the lower bandwidth of existing mobile wireless
networks. [PRWEB Jun 9, 2004]

Released: IPTV in China: "Time for a
Commercial Break?" Norson Analysis
Report
02/01/2005 08:48 PMReport Briefing: Late in 2004, China witnessed a flurry of new
partnerships and announcements related to Internet Protocol Television
(IPTV) promising to bring high-quality video to both computers and
television sets. Besides offering customized, interactive video
services, IPTV is envisioned as a low-cost solution for expanding the
reach of Internet services into China's huge television audience.
Behind this potentially vast market, however, lie serious obstacles:
regulatory confusion, a lack of unique content, and serious threats
from competing technologies and services. In this report, Norson looks
at the promise of IPTV and the substantial threats this new technology
faces in China. [PRWEB Jan 31, 2005]
