In a message posted to the OSI license-discuss email list on March 29, Intel attorney McCoy Smith wrote, "Intel has been studying internally the issue of license proliferation. One step Intel would like to take to reduce license proliferation (both internally, and externally, to Intel) is to have the "Intel Open Source License" (aka "BSD License with Export Notice") removed from future use as an approved OSI open source license."

Open source license help needed

Open source license help needed 12/17/2004 06:33 PM

Every now and then, I get an e-mail asking me to clarify the license associated with code that I've posted on this site, such as my date parsing script. I'm looking for an open source license that I can start slapping on things to ensure people that they can use it for whatever they want, but wading through the list of licenses is no fun at all. Here are the features I'm looking for:

  • Minimal boiler-plate. I don't want to have to copy and paste dozens of lines of legalese in to a 30 line long example script; my ideal license would allow me to "link it in" in a single line ("(c) Simon Willison 2004, released under [X] license").
  • Allows commercial use. I don't care if people make money off something I've published here.
  • Encourages attribution. I don't want people feeling they have to credit me if they reuse five lines of Python I posted as an example somewhere, but I'm not averse to getting credited for more substantial contributions. I don't want to make attribution a requirement though as I'd rather people used my code and failed to attribute me than didn't use it at all.
  • Is compatible with other licenses. I often get asked if people can include my code in other open source projects - whatever license I use needs not to get in the way of other people's licensing aims for their own projects.

I'm tempted to just slap a note saying "this code is in the public domain" on everything and have done, but I'm not sure if there are unpleasant side effects to doing so. The only thing I want to avoid is people explicitly claiming my work as their own.

Choosing an open source license

Choosing an open source license 07/26/2004 04:04 AM
The Open Source Initiative (OSI) lists more than 50 approved open source licenses. Each license is anywhere from slightly to vastly unlike its neighbors. All of them are written for lawyers, not mere mortal software developers. So how do you choose the most sensible an open source license for your projects?

The consensus seems to be that EVDB will be a Web-2.0-style, Wiki-style, RSS-friendly, Flickr-and-del.icio.us-like thingy. Sounds promising! I'll certainly check it out when it's public. ...

HOWTO view source and license from Flash

HOWTO view source and license from Flash
content
04/08/2005 12:54 AM
Xeni Jardin: Mike Chambers of Macromedia says:
Lawrence Lessig spoke at the FlashForward conference last night in San Francisco. In his talk, title The Cost of Copy Right, he stressed to the Flash designers and developers the necessity of a culture of sharing. While the Flash community has actually been a very open community, sharing content and source, the Flash Player does not provide an easy or standard way for Flash content developers to allow viewers to download their source code (Flash files are separate from their source).

So, I have put together a simple ActionScript library for Flash that allows Flash content creators to easily allow anyone to download the source to their content by right clicking on that content. I have also added a context menu item that allows a distribution license to be specified. Finally, in a nod to Mr Lessig, I have released it all under a Creative Commons license. More info here and a screen shot here.

About a month ago, Microsoft posted some of its source code to SourceForge. SourceForge is a, if not the, major distribution point for open source software. Microsoft's code was put there under the terms of the Common Public License, which allows modification, addition, redistribution - in short, it allows most of the rights and privileges that we associate with open source software.
