Ongoing Battles 03/31/2005 12:03 PM

Dave Orchard: In the Web services vs REST debate, the sad part is that the communities are not coming closer together In the Web services vs REST debate, there are no winners.  It doesn’t matter anyway, the real winners are SMTP and BitTorrent. Truth is a web page dated 1969/12/31. You are the enemy you have to defeat. We are the new MSM.  We like to link to tripe and hysteria.  But rarely to the good stuff.

The Ongoing Disruption Of MySQL

The Ongoing Disruption Of MySQL 07/12/2004 05:44 PM
Earlier this year, we noted that mySQL was quickly becoming a disru ptive force for traditional database companies, even though those companies insisted they didn't really compete with the cheaper (and, in some cases, free) open source database. However, here's another story, pointing out that not only did mySQL swipe a deal from Oracle at SABRE, but that Oracle is getting increasingly worried about the company. While naysayers point out that, from a revenue perspective, mySQL has a tiny portion of the market, that's a huge mistake. Considering that mySQL is redefining the market, and shrinking the overall revenue, anyone judging this contest on revenue alone isn't going to get very far.

Music Industry's Ongoing Obtuseness

Music Industry's Ongoing Obtuseness 05/07/2004 12:06 PM

  • Steven Levy (Newsweek): iTunes and Lawsuits. Isn't it obvious by now that by accelerating the momentum of online stores like iTunes (and also promoting subscription services like Rhapsody, which can potentially deliver huge royalties to the industry) the industry will move quicker to a model from which it could launch hundreds of new ways to make money? (Jobs himself suggested one: sell out-of-catalog music now rotting in storage rooms for low prices.) Isn't this a better way to move towards the future than suing college students? How many times does the same chorus have to play before music execs can hum along?

Unspooling the ongoing thread of deceit

Unspooling the ongoing thread of deceit 07/12/2004 12:51 PM
"DeLay is doing everything moral, legal and ethical to increase the Republican majority and advance conservative ideas," says his spokesman, Stuart Roy. Heck, we already know that Tom DeLay loves the children enough to start a charitable fund to help pay for "late-night convention parties, a luxury suite during President Bush's speech at Madison Square Garden and yacht cruises" during the 2004 GOP convention (as well as the children, of course). Now, he's connected (via an email) to Enron, asking them for extra money in order to help fund the already-notorious redistricting in Texas. When will enough be enough?

    Ongoing discussion of Eastern Standard
    Tribe
    12/06/2003 08:15 AM
The early review copies of my next novel, Eastern Standard Tribe, have begun to circulate among critics and bookstore owners. There's a bit of a discussion going on about the book's notions of geography-independent tribes over in Julie Czernada's SFF.net newsgroup.
What struck me, about 2:00 AM this morning, after reading the book last night, is that the tribes exist already. Cory isn't talking about a nebulous future, I am, in effect, part of E.S.T. I certainly haven't adjusted my circadians to E.S.T. (consciously, though for some time I have been rising an hour or two earlier than I used to, and going to bed earlier), yet also, for some time now, a significant percentage of my social interaction has revolved around newsgroups that focus on several E.S.T.authors, some E.S.T.publishers, a WorldCon that took place in E.S.T. Additional time is spent communicating with Robert J. Sawyer's Yahoo Group (E.S.T.) and an R.P.Gaming programmers' group that has its key members in E.S.T. My favourite Canadian book distributor is on E.S.T. and I devote a dis-proportionate share of my work energy into promoting their books.

    The Ongoing Fragmentation Of The
    Downloadable Music Store World

    The Ongoing Fragmentation Of The
    Downloadable Music Store World
    07/06/2004 05:28 AM
We've discussed many times the fact that there are simply too many downloadable music stores with too many formats out there. It's not that we don't think competition is good, but all these different formats, with all these different restrictions, and different rules about which devices they can play on is making a huge mess of the industry. It's leading to increasing confu sion and resentment from music fans who are pissed off that the music they can supposedly buy from one store won't work on the music player they own, or can't be mixed into a playlist they bought at another store. It's as if ever retail music store in the world had their own format for selling music. If you go into Tower Records they'll give you a CD which can only play on a Tower Records CD player, while in Virgin they give you a special cassette that will only play on special Virgin cassette players. Any marketing person with half a brain would realize that the market would be much, much bigger if they settled on a common format with fewer restrictions. First, the industry couldn't figure out how to embrace file sharing, and now they're doing their best to muck up download stores. It's amazing the recording industry functions at all. It seems to function in spite of itself.

    More Space Battles

More Space Battles 12/05/2003 03:10 PM
    Space Invaders returns!

I’m old enough to remember when it was new. My arcade-playing days predate the first-person games—for me, arcade games are about shooting things in outer space. Controlling a human walking around with a gun seems so mundane and puny. I need rockets and ray guns.

I was a big fan of Galaga and Asteroids too, and I’ve spent many hours playing Swoop and Maelstrom.

Another favorite was Missile Command. Does anyone know of a good OS X version of Missile Command?
