E-Voting Critic and Election Judge

E-Voting Critic and Election Judge 03/06/2004 01:58 AM
Avi Rubin: My day as an election judge. I continue to believe that the Diebold voting machines represent a huge threat to our democracy. I fundamentally believe that we have thrown our trust in the outcome of our elections in the hands of a handful of companies (Diebold, Sequoia, ES&S) who are in a position to control the final outcomes of our elections. I also believe that the outcomes can be changed without any knowledge by election judges or anyone else. Furthermore, meaningful recounts are impossible with these machines. I also believe that we have great people working in the trenches and on the front lines. These are ordinary people, mostly elderly, who believe in our country and our democracy, and who work their butts off for 16 hours, starting at 6 a.m. to try to keep the mechanics of our elections running smoothly. It is a shame that the e-voting tidal wave has a near hypnotic effect on these judges and almost all voters. I believe that after today's experience, I am much better equipped to make the arguments against e-voting machines with no voter verifiability, but I also have a great appreciation for how hard it is going to be to fight them, given how much voters and election officials love them.

Companies?

Election Officials Tied To E-Voting
Companies?
06/24/2004 03:07 PM
We've wondered in the past exactly why so many election officials seem to be so against better electronic voting machines that are much more likely to accurately record the voters' wishes. Now, some of the people digging up all the dirt on e-voting machines is starting to look at those election officials, and what they're finding isn't pretty. The e-voting companies seem to pass on nice little gifts to certain election officials. The article describes one case of a California election official who received a free trip to Florida by an e-voting machine company to help them film an "infomercial." Think she's now biased as to which machine they use? The group is now putting together a larger report looking at similar conflicts of interest which they hope to publish later this year.

Election Officials Hoping E-Voting
Machines With Paper Receipts Fail

Election Officials Hoping E-Voting
Machines With Paper Receipts Fail
05/27/2004 11:04 AM
You would think that the goal of an election official would be to help guarantee the most accurate election possible, promoting the benefits of democracy. However, it seems that that's not true at all. We've already talked about election officials who have decided to ignore rules requiring their electronic voting machines be more secure and others who are suing because they don't want to make their machines more secure. However, now that Nevada is going to use e-voting machines with a paper trail, many election officials are hoping the machines will fail just to say "I told you so!" Once again, they're missing the point. It is very likely that some of the machines will have bugs - and all of these election officials will start screaming about them. However, the problem with the current e-voting machines is that no one knows if there are bugs or not in how the votes are actually counted. Just because you've set up the system to not inform you if something goes wrong, it doesn't mean that everything has gone right. Shouldn't we trust a system that will at least let us double check if something has gone wrong more than one that doesn't let us check at all? Of course, the article notes that the paper trail in these Nevada elections will be useless, because it doesn't qualify as a legitimate ballot to be recounted. In other words, the only point of using e-voting with the paper trail in these elections is to see if the machines jam up, and then let election officials complain loudly about the problems with paper receipt e-voting machines.
