BoingBoing goes three columns

BoingBoing goes three columns 06/20/2004 05:18 AM

A New Boing Boing.

I'm proud to say that Boing Boing has launched a new design, one that incorporates sponsors and a cleaner look. I was down visiting with Danny Hillis today (man, talk about mind blowing) and I was very happy to hear that he reads Boing Boing regularly. My role with Boing Boing is the equivalent of "band manager" - I helped them round up the wonderful sponsors - Wired, Google (Blogger), and O'Reilly - and work out the details of how they can take the site to the next phase of it's ongoing evolution ("brain candy for happy mutants since 1988!"). Take a look!...

[John Battelle]

PeopleSoft Lawyer Writing Web Columns
About Antitrust Trial
06/16/2004 11:33 AM

My colleague John Paczkowski alerts me to an interesting development in the Bush administration's efforts to prevent Oracle from buying PeopleSoft. Gary Reback, a lawyer for PeopleSoft, is posting daily write-ups of the antitrust trial that's taking place in San Francisco. This is a smart PR move for PeopleSoft. Reback is a well-known antitrust lawyer (he was one of the major instigators of the original government action against Microsoft's monopoly abuses). This is is client's perspective, of course, but it's a fascinating one.

Revenge of the S..t

Revenge of the S..t 06/06/2005 12:11 AM
Saw Star Wars III. I think that if you spliced episodes I, II and III together, you might get a pretty decent movie. Just take the last half an hour from this one - because no other bit in it deserves saving. The first third of the movie is mostly boring - I yawned at the attempts to create sense-of-wonder (you know guys, there's a thing called "too much").

The middle part of the movie I mostly giggled through, much to the annoyance of my fellow moviegoers, I'm sure.

The final third had a bit of the same feeling as the old saga, and I had nearly a tear in my eye at one point. But still.

Star Wars III is kinda like going to a bad hamburger place: It's crap food, and then you laugh at a poor waiter who drops a tray and makes a mess, but their ice cream leaves a decent aftertaste.

Next time, I'll just have the ice cream, thanks.

Scientific American reports that revenge is indeed sweet.  No surprise there.  I always thought that revenge is a powerful source of motivation and that inability to take revenge leads to severe stress.

The article should should have distinguish before and after 'taste' of revenge more clearly though.  I think the aftertaste is rather sour.

With the last movie virtually on our doorsteps –hard to believe, isn’t it?-- magazines are chomping at the bit to cover what will hopefully go down in history as the best Star Wars episode ever. Leading the pack, as usual, is Premiere, who will release a cover featuring Anakin that completes the collection they started in 1999 with their four Episode I covers. Tech Buzz Game
http://buzz.research.yahoo.com/

Press Release:
http://home.businessw ire.com/portal/site/google/index.jsp?ndmViewId=news_view&newsId=200503 15005882&newsLang=en

Yahoo! Research Labs, Yahoo!'s organization for advanced research in science and technology, has teamed with O'Reilly Media, the premier information source for leading-edge computer technologies, to develop a joint research project called the Tech Buzz Game, an online prediction market that allows consumers to forecast the popularity of technology concepts, products and trends. The game was introduced today at the O'Reilly Emerging Technology conference. The Tech Buzz Game leverages search query volume and frequency on Yahoo! Search to measure a term's popularity or "buzz." It mirrors the functionality of the stock market, enabling participants to "buy" and "sell" virtual shares in their favorite technology terms based on their estimates of future value. The game, which is powered by NewsFutures (http://www.newsfutures.com), the leading provider of prediction markets software, utilizes new patent pending market and auction mechanisms invented at Yahoo! Research Labs by Dr. Gary William Flake, Yahoo!'s principal scientist, and Senior Research Scientist Dr. David Pennock. The Tech Buzz Game is divided into separate markets that fall into topic areas such as hardware, software, mobile and web. Each market pits rival technologies against one another. For example, the "Browser" market includes Internet Explorer 6 and Firefox among others. Participants would buy stock in the technology they believe will increase in search popularity. "The Tech Buzz Game is a fundamentally new type of online auction that will allow us to determine how well emerging trends can be predicted by the collective wisdom of crowds as correlated with Internet search terms," said Yahoo!'s Dr. Flake. This has been added to Information Futures Markets Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

Jakito's Creators Interviewed

Jakito's Creators Interviewed 07/21/2004 09:30 AM

jackito_video.jpg imageRoland Piquepaille sat down with the CEO and CTO of Novinit, the French firm behind the Jackito "Tactile Digital Assistant" (the one you use with just your thumbs). Although the company appears to have realized many of the errors they initially made in the product announcement, there's still enough tomfoolery to dispell any confidence that I might have that the Jackito's designers are in touch with the rest of the PDA world (or that they even want to be).

What I still don't get is why I should have to pay upwards for $700 for a crappy PDA when its major claim to fame is something that could just as easily be done in software on an established platform, like Palm or Windows Mobile. It's not like you can't turn a Palm on its side and use your thumbs on it.

The software supports NAS/SAN, virtualized storage and archiving to tape through "Pervasive Storage Architecture" that allows it to handle a wide variety of tasks, including virtualization, management, provisioning, snapshot, striping and more. Storage Elements expects to make Core available in Sept. 2004 at a price of US$14,955 for "virtually unlimited" users within the network. System requirements call for Mac OS X Server v10.0 or higher, a G4 or better processor, 128MB RAM and 9GB hard drive space.
