For the first time in history, autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have flown using flocking and swarming algorithms. “Flocking and Swarming” are two words used interchangeably to refer to modeled flight that is biologically inspired by the flight of flocking birds and swarming insects. From Autonomous Vehicles That Crash To
Autonomous Vehicles That Learn

While some people considered DARPA's Grand Challenge race a flop when the autonomous vehicles failed to get very far, many involved thought that it was a good start, and with a little more time in the shop they could build autonomous vehicles that could successfully navigate the course. DARPA, however, seems to want to go in another direction. It seems like a bit of a kneejerk reaction away from where things were already headed, but now they say they want to focus on auton omous learning vehicles. The idea is that a smarter autonomous vehicle would learn to recognize a pothole and avoid it the next time one came around. All this really does, though, is add to the complexity of the vehicle, without necessarily leading to much benefit. Learning systems have a mixed history with most systems not doing all that well. To achieve this plan, though, DARPA plans to hold a series of races between a "learning" vehicle and a regular autonomous robotic vehicle, with the goal being for the learning vehicle to get much better each time. It's a little unclear if this new direction is separate from the regular autonomous Grand Challenge or an attempt to replace it. Still, some of those involved with the Grand Challenge say their systems will contain some amount of adaptive learning. However, the general consensus is that, for right now, it's more productive to focus on autonomous machines and let the humans do the learning.

These new OAVs - short for Organic Aerial Vehicles, although 'organic' doesn't mean what you think it means - come in three sizes, can travel up to 30 knots in light rain and moderate winds, and will even be able to avoid obstacles like buildings, trees, and other drones.

And if we tell the terrorists we've got flying robot buttplugs coming for them, we may finally have a workable deterrent.

Swarming and Grids

Swarming and Grids 12/19/2004 03:07 PM

I ran across SwarmStream and thought it was a wonderful piece of technology.  Basically, they took BitTorrent and slipped it under Java so that any Java application can trade bits as fast as BitTorrent can.

Unfortunately, not enough people needs it badly enough to make it a successful venture IMHO.  Same opinion applies to the grid technology.  If you can plug your feed tube into some government agency with a fat budget, excellent.  If not, your meals will be far and wide in-between.  If you took Google's wonderfully expansive service technology and turned it into a product, will it survive?  My opinion is that it won't.

Who Needs It?

Really.  Who needs server farms?  Google does.  Who else and how many of them are there?  More importantly, are they the kind of customers with the right sense of value?  Would Yahoo or Microsoft buy it?  I don't think so.  People who need it are few and most of them are too gung-ho to be interested in buying instead of building it themselves.  Banks?  Are banks prepared to own or even rent server farms?

Who Wants It?

Swaming requires third party participants.  That cuts entire financial services sector out.  And entertainment industry is, in some ways, more conservative than the banking industry.  Will they let their latest hot movie swarm?  What a joke.

Revolution is a lonely business if you jump the gun.  Swarming and grid technologies, active or not, are ahead of its time.  If you got enough money and marketing know-how, you can hurry time.  Otherwise, you are walking into a world of hurt.  Maybe you can prevail.  Most likely not.

Swarming robots

Swarming robots 11/14/2003 01:46 PM
iRobot, the company behind the Roomba, doesn't just make robotic vacuum cleaners. They're also building robots that could group together in swarms and be used to clear landmines or rescue earthquake victims:The point of the Swarm project is to be able to program lots of robots to communicate with each other using proprietary Behavior Language software. And we're not talking about 10 or even 100 bots, but 10,000 or more. The name "Swarm" comes from the robots' ability to work like insects... The robots communicate using an infrared light signal that begins with a chosen leader (which has an antenna on its head) and then spreads to the rest. So essentially, they "talk" to each other. When this happens, the lights begin flashing. Each light has an accompanying sound. The sounds tell the robots how far away they are from each other.Read...

Computer animators have been using cellular automata in their crowd scenes for ages, granting the dancers in the Hunchback of Notre Dame and the Orcs in LotR the liberty to autonomously determine the fine details of their movement, creating realistic mob scenes that appear to contain a cast of thousands. The problem is, as the programming for the automata gets more sophisticated, they start to express non-linear behavior.

In the climax for The Return of the King, the animated forces of evil kept running away from their enemies.

"So each of these computerized soldiers is assessing the environment around them, drawing on a repertoire of military moves that have been taught them through motion capture - determining how they will combat the enemy, step over the terrain, deal with obstacles in front of them through their own intelligence - and there's 200,000 of them doing that..."

"For the first two years, the biggest problem we had was soldiers fleeing the field of battle," Taylor said.

"We could not make their computers stupid enough to not run away."

Autopilot is an open-source firmmare for autonomous model aircraft:
We're building a system for autonomous aerial vehicles for the hobbiest. The entire design and all software is available as Free Software, licensed under the GPL. The goal is to produce a do-it-yourself autopilot kit that anyone can build and fly.

Our initial target is 60 sized model helicopters and less than $500 in parts. So far we've been very successful -- one of our 2.2 boards has hovered a Concept 60 for several minutes at a time under attitude command from the safety pilot. It isn't totally autonomous yet, but the demonstration has proven that the inertial measurement unit (IMU) and Kalman filter approach work well.

The new road markers have been developed by Shane Farritor, a roboticist at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, in a bid to help reduce the $100 billion per year that the Department of Transportation estimates is lost to the US economy through accidents and delays caused by highway lane closures.

The self-propelled markers take the form of robotic three-wheeled bases for the brightly coloured barrels that are set out to demarcate road repair zones. Farritor says they can open and close traffic lanes faster and more safely than humans.

The tiny robot is just 136mm x 85mm, weigh 12.3 grams including two gyros, batteries, bluetooth link, and a digital camera. It has a flight time of about 3 minutes. You can see photos and read more about the robot at the BBC, space.com, and Slashdot. Contact Center Solution

Onyx Software, a leading CRM (customer relationship management) supplier and Interactive Intelligence, which delivers business comms software (interaction management), have signed an alliance agreement designed to reduce the cost and complexity of contact centre automation and CRM integration. Under the agreement, the two companies deliver a pre-developed software connector between the latest version of Onyx Employee Portal, which consolidates customer information, and Interactive Intelligence's Customer Interaction Center(CIC). The resulting software improves productivity and customer service by embeding the call interaction information into the customer data screens in Onyx. [PRWEB Jun 14, 2004]

More Flying Robots

More Flying Robots 04/08/2005 08:06 PM
There have been several flying robots in the news lately. A Marine Corps News story describes their Wasp Micro Air Vehicle (MAV), a hand-launched robot plane with Kevlar wings and side-looking cameras. Another MAV being designed by Honeywell for DARPA is described in a News.com article. And, last, is an autonomous helicopter being developed at New Mexico State University's Rio-Robo Lab, described in an Albuquerque Tribune article and an earlier NMSU press release.

World's Smallest Flying Robots

Linux Electrons has an article about the World's Smallest Flying Robots being unveiled. Unlike some other micro air vehicles, these robots have onboard batteries (no power tether) and are autonomous via radio link (as a side note, Rog-a-matic emailed me that it could be that radio links to robots are patented now?, weird!). Anyway, these micro fliers could be used from anything like surveilance to hobby toys. It's a small world after all!
