Making Human Motion More Animated

Making Human Motion More Animated

Making Human Motion More Animated 03/31/2005 03:01 AM

Capturing and animating human motion for use in virtual reality or in television production is typically long and costly. However that is about to change with the first fast low-cost motion animation system that needs no markers, bodysuits or other sensors. [PRWEB Mar 31, 2005]

Xeni Jardin: Boing Boing buddy Eli the Bearded sez:
Some Apple Powerbooks have a motion sensor inside that allows the computer to detect how it is being moved. This is useful for, eg, emergency harddrive head parking when a sudden fall is detected. Amit Singh, while preparing for a book on OS X internals, has written several programs that use the motion sensor for other purposes. This page mentions those and then goes into great detail about a device driver to use the motion of the computer as a substitute mouse.

Woodring animated

Woodring animated 08/17/2004 01:25 PM
frank Ever since I interviewed artist Jim Woodring back in 1995 for the bOING bOING Happy Mutant Handbook, I've been enamored with his surreal comix inspired by his childhood hallucinations and "psychological malfunctions." Now, Taruto Fuyama has animated Woodring's Frank character in a beautiful piece that somehow manages to perfectly express the dreamy tone and emotion of the comic. (Someone else's attempt here.) Fuyama won a Prize of Excellence for the work in the Japan Media Arts Festival. The animation is online in Real format. From the "Reason for the Award":
"...the greatest appeal of this work is that it had successfully expressed unique "newness" by combining 3D-CG and classical cartoon-like design. Alien creatures created by pasting comic frames to 3D-CG in a Gothic manner generate uncomfortable feelings, and these uncomfortable feelings that color the entire work feature this work's contemporary sensitivity."

Completely stainless steel, they're available for import now from TokyoFlash for roughly $140 including shipping, "because you are a rebel!" Animated Figures Available In Canada

Animated Figures Available In Canada 05/07/2004 03:24 AM
Even though they are a Target exclusive below the border, the Animated Clone Wars figures seem to be fair game here in Canada. Sadly, the traditional distribution problems here are again preventing Hasbro Canada from getting these little gems into our grubby little hands. The toy company isn’t to blame this time (or so it would seem) since they are currently being solicited on their retailer’s only web site. Thankfully, a North Vancouver toyshop, Big Pete’s, has noticed this oversight and has ordered a large quantity of the line. That being said, Canadians looking to avoid a large secondary market sting and potential Customs charges need only drop Pete a line.

Animated "Blind Man's Penis"

Animated "Blind Man's Penis" 05/06/2004 10:24 AM
Jo hn Alderman says:
"Back in the '70s, John Trubee (weirdo prankster) saw one of those ads that offers to assess your poetic talent and set your poems to music. So--testing limits--he wrote the most offensive thing he could think of, pushing all the buttons, and sent it off. The refrain was originally 'Stevie Wonder’s penis, is erect because he's blind.' The company wrote back and, of course, told him he had talent, and would set his song to music and press disks if he'd pay them a little. But, because they didn't want to get sued, they had to substitute 'a blind man' for Stevie. The record was pressed and it became a sort-of underground hit in LA. Funny also because Trubee's prank calls were supposed to be the inspiration for Matt Groening's use of them. They were friends!"
Now, "Blind Man's Penis" has been given the Flash animation treatment! Link

In The Broadband Battle Between Speed
And Price, Customers Choose Price

In The Broadband Battle Between Speed
And Price, Customers Choose Price
12/09/2003 03:39 PM
Back in October we noted that DSL and cable providers were trying to differe ntiate themselves from each other. The DSL providers were focusing on being the low cost provider, while the cable guys wanted to be the high speed providers. At the time, we pointed out that this was likely to backfire on the cable companies. People like the speed of broadband, but for most applications there's a "good enough" speed - and many people want it more for the always on connection than the speed itself. It's looking like we were right. The latest study shows that, despite cable's commanding lead in the US, many more people are signing up for DSL these days because of the lower price. It's the basic "good enough" argument. What DSL offers is good enough for what most people want to do with their connections now. Also, the speed difference is minimal right now. You don't get that much faster speeds with cable, and there's not much you can currently do with that extra bandwidth. It used to be that people would sign up so they could download songs, but the music industry is cracking down on that enough that it's become less of a draw for many subscribers as well.

How Not To Price

How Not To Price 05/13/2004 09:23 PM
While the mainstream press picks up on the (boring) obvious story that Six Apart has released version 3.0 of their popular Movable Type blogging tool, they seem to be missing out on the bigger story: the pricing structure they set up is being almost universally trashed by loyal Mova ble Type Users. I've never used Movable Type so I have no opinion one way or the other on the software or whatever they decide to charge for it. However, it seems that they've screwed up one of the most basic rules in pricing: never take away features and charge for them. You can charge for new features - but taking away features that were included for free before always pisses off your most loyal customers. They feel suckered. They feel like you've pulled a bait and switch on them. In this case, many MT users set up multiple blogs with multiple authors. That's what the software encouraged them to do. Now, they're looking at the pricing and realizing to continue doing so on the new platform would cost them around $600. "Costs more for doing less" isn't a way to make users happy. One other rule of pricing: recognize the competition. There are an awful lot of blogging tools out there, and more are coming out every day. Not all of these are free, and people clearly pay to use certain tools. However, ignoring competitive pricing (as Six Apart appears to have done, since the prices they're offering are well above the competition) doesn't make much sense - especially when the switching costs really aren't that high. Anyway, it looks like Six Apart has gone into damage control mode, trying to explain that this is just a "developer release." However, they (of all people) should have known how their users would respond to this offering.

  • Reuters: Google Slashes IPO, SEC OK Expected Today. Google Inc. slashed the size of its closely watched initial public offering nearly in half to less than $2 billion on Wednesday, splashing cold water on what has been touted as the hottest Internet IPO in years.
  • Cold water, no. But definitely a well-deserved rebuke by the investor community that was being asked to pay way too much in the first place. There's been a significant whiff of greed in the Google IPO saga, combined with some unfortunate arrogance on the part of the company. I'm glad to see that investors didn't buy the hype beyond a fairly sensible point. Even $80 sounds a little high to me, but it's at least in the not-totally-insane range.

The Price of Perfection 04/23/2004 09:33 AM

Joel on Software - Thursday, April 22, 2004: Joel makes some good points about how we programmers have a tendency to try make things perfect beyond any practical benefit. He's touched on this before as well, with a story about the Netscape refactoring.

Perfectionism is a very dangerous quality in business and in life, because by being perfectionist about one thing you are, by definition, neglecting another.

The three days I spent insuring that all icons in CityDesk 3.0 are displayed with perfect alpha-blended effects came at the price of having a web site where the descender of the "g" is not a hyperlink. And both are at the price of working on my next book, or writing another article for Joel on Software, or making CityDesk publish really big sites faster.
