A New Marriage Decision (for
Heterosexuals)
06/17/2005 05:03 PMA little over one year ago, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial court
made history with its 2004 decision in Goodridge, generating a new
option for gay couples: marriage. We all know the controversy (and
state constitutional amendments) these changes have wrought. Much of
the focus has been on same-sex couples and...

Gay marriage compared to box-turtle
marriage in Senate, Daily Show replies
07/19/2004 02:52 AM
In a fit of astonishing lunacy, Texas Senator John Cornyn tried to
explain the need to ban gay marriage in the context of the social harm
that would accrue from allowing men to marry box turtles ("It does not
affect your daily life very much if your neighbor marries a box
turtle, but that does not mean it is right...Now you must raise you
children up in a world where that union of man and box turtle is on
the same legal footing as man and wife"). Jon Stewart's Daily Show
segment on this statement is nothing short of brilliant. Let's hope it
gets enough airplay to cost Cornyn the election (and possibly get him
institutionalized somewhere...).

What I'd say about gay marriage
07/13/2004 10:08 AM If I were John Kerry, here's what I'd say about the gay marriage
amendment in a debate: There he goes again. George Bush — the
uniter, not the divider — is using this issue as a wedge to
drive Americans apart by making this complex question of morality,
religion, states rights, and love into a simple yes-no, "you're either
with us or against us." Americans are smarter than that, Mr.
President. We can handle tough questions in all their complexity. And,
frankly, it's a failure of leadership and of vision that you can only
see things in black and...

the anti-gay-marriage nutbars "Focus on the Family":
FAFBLOG: So! How's the Family?
JAMES DOBSON: The Family is in deadly danger, Fafnir.
FB: Danger? Oh no! I like families!
JD: Yes, danger from the homosexual agenda which has been trying for
decades to destroy it.
FB: I never knew homosexuals had an agenda! I just thought they were
ordinary people who were easily stereotyped as lovers of musical
theater.
JD: So they and the gay-controlled Hollywood elite would have you
believe. But the Forces of Gay are now closer than ever to destroying
the divine institution of the civil marriage certificate, and with it,
the family itself.

Love 'n' Marriage Day in MA - May 17!
05/03/2004 08:10 AM May 17 is the first day same-sex marriages are allowed in
Massachusetts. Anyone else feel like celebrating together? How about
this? We show up en masse at our local town halls. We each come with a
bouquet of flowers or two. As the couples leave, we each give one
flower to each couple. Other ideas?...

Brookline Town Hall. "Let me get rid of that for you," said a woman
wearing an orange GLAD t-shirt, taking an orange rind from the tiny
hand of a four year old on the shoulder of one of his fathers. GLAD
was there to hand out roses, serve pastries, and applaud. There were
no crowds of anonymous well-wishers, unlike last night's festival in
Cambridge, just clusters of couples with their family and best

Gay marriage satire
Gay marriage satire
07/27/2004 01:18 PMThe Fafblog continues its reign as the funniest political satire blog
on the Net with today's post about gay marriage in the form of a
mock-interview with the Family Research Council's Dr. James Dobson:
[JD]: The legality of gay marriage sent out powerful shockwaves of
destructive gay energy throughout hetereosexuality. Without an
amendment to the constitution specifically barring homosexuals from
obtaining marriage rights, this destructive Gay Force rampaged
throughout the Traditional Family Nexus, corrupting it and turning
thousands of upright, decent, missionary-position-loving straight
couples into deranged, out-of-control mutant gay perverts.
FB: This is horrible! What in your scientific opinion as a doctor can
we do to stop this?
JD: Well, humanity's only hope at this point lies in the Marriage
Protection Act, which would strip federal courts of the ability to
review the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act. That way
if the draconian anti-gay laws we need turn out to be
unconstitutional, we'll never know, because the courts won't be able
to stop them.

Love and Marriage
01/07/2004 04:23 PMMade it back from Mexico City this afternoon. The only
unhappy event during the trip was finishing reading the massive Pe
loponnesian War and failing to find a good English
bookstore. I ended up settling for an Agatha Christie novel: Lord Edgware Dies (1933). A married Peruvian
woman sitting next to me disagreed with this discourse by Hercule
Poirot, bachelor detective:
"Often I have observed that it is a great misfortune for a man to
have a wife who loves him. She creates the scenes of jealousy,
she makes him look ridiculous, she insists on having all his time and
attention. Ah! non! it is not the bed of
roses."
And combining the earlier themes of MIT students and ghetto
humor, this just in from a 6.171 student...
"Yo Mama so stupid, she took a rigid body mechanics class
because she wanted to meet hot guys."
(We will leave this contributor anonymous so that the MIT
administration does not begin disciplinary proceedings...)

Blogger's RSS Decision: Atom Only
Blogger's RSS Decision: Atom Only
05/10/2004 01:23 PM(Geek alert: This may be boring to people who don't care about the
innards of technology.)
I'm sorry to see that Blogger's
latest incarnation doesn't support multiple kinds of syndication
formats, and is going with Atom only. It would be trivially
easy to do so. (Blogger Pro users can still create RSS 1.0 feeds, as I
understand things.)
A couple of months ago, someone from the Blogger team suggested to me
that this was a server issue -- that several million users creating
more than one kind of XML file would somehow be problematic from a
resources standpoint. Really? A problem for the company with (best
guess) 100,000 servers and plans to offer anyone who wants it a
gigabyte of disk space for e-mail?
Google has a right to do this, just as UserLand has a right not to
support Atom (and Movable Type not to support RSS 2.0 and so on). It
would be nice to see a resolution to this fork in the RSS road,
though.
