RNC Security's Wireless Helmet Cams

RNC Security's Wireless Helmet Cams 08/27/2004 01:48 PM

head_helmet_cam.jpg imageOver 200 of the patrol officers bussed in as part of the Department of Homeland Security's ramp up to the Republican National Convention will be equipped with wirelessly networked helmet cameras. Each of the helmet cams will broadcast back to a central control room where officials will be able to monitor and compile a bigger picture of what exactly is being seen by the security officers.

The units don't use Wi-Fi, though, so cracking the system used by the security forces might be a little difficult (if that's your thing). Instead, the camera uploads via satellite, which then travels back to the central booth via an encrypted internet stream.

Wouldn't it be great if the public could see those streams, too? Maybe one of the hacker groups will cobble together a free network equivalent.

Microsoft Security's Weak Link

Microsoft Security's Weak Link 08/30/2004 02:09 PM
Windows XP Service Pack 2 is now making its way onto computers. This major update is a step forward for a company that has had an abysmal record on security, and we should be happy for that much. But it's only one overdue action. Users should also install more capable firewalls, antivirus software and antispyware applications. But the service pack also reminds us of a situation that Microsoft has never properly addressed: the retail/computer security problem.

Office 2003 Tool: Local Installation
Source Tool

Office 2003 Tool: Local Installation
Source Tool
05/28/2004 01:48 AM
The Local Installation Source Tool is a wizard to help manage your Local Installation Source (LIS) on computers running Microsoft Office 2003. The LIS Tool allows you to enable or disable LIS, and to move the MsoCache folder to a new volume. This download is intended for use by customers and network administrators with LIS issues who contact Microsoft Product Support Services. Local Installation Source is a Setup feature. When a user installs Microsoft Office 2003 from a CD or a compressed CD image on the network, Setup copies any required installation files to a hidden folder on the local computer. Microsoft Windows Installer uses this local installation source to install Office, and the local source remains available for repairing, reinstalling or updating Office later on. Users can install features on demand or run Setup in maintenance mode to add new features without their original media.

Variable Compliance Actuators

Variable Compliance Actuators 04/15/2004 06:21 PM
The CMU Robotics Institute has released a new technical paper title, "An Actuator with Mechanically Adjustable Series Compliance" (PDF format). It sounds complicated but basically what they're describing is the use of a spring with adjustable stiffness in the leg of a biped. The spring is adjusted to recover and reuse energy that would otherwise be lost when the robot is running, jumping, or performing other high-energy tasks. The paper includes plenty of background info, diagrams, and a photo of the complete leg actuator. The research is being done at the CMU Microdynamic Systems Lab.
