Controlled Demolition Incorporated is a family-owned company that demolishes bridges, buildings, missiles, and other structures around the world. Their Web site features a breathtaking video of the orchestrated collapse of the Seattle Kingdome. Company head Mark Loizeaux was recently interviewed by New Scientist:
kingdome3(1)"It has to be the right job in the first place, the right explosive, the right pattern of laying the charges, and sometimes, which sounds odd, the right repairs to bring it down as we want, so no one or no other structure is harmed. And by differentially controlling the velocity of failure in different parts of the structure, you can make it walk, you can make it spin, you can make it dance."

The Federal Depository Library Program has fallen behind in cataloging and preserving access to government documents published only on the Web. As a result, public access to those publications is spotty at best. "This is not a problem; this is a crisis," said Daniel Greenstein, head of the California Digital Library, which serves the 10 universities in the University of California system. He said information is disappearing from government Web sites at an alarming rate. At the Government Printing Office, which runs the depository library program, officials are struggling with the problem, known as fugitive documents, said Judith Russell, superintendent of documents. Fugitive documents are electronic publications that remain outside the federal depository collections in 1,300 libraries nationwide. According to Greenstein, Web crawlers are fairly good at capturing documents from the Web surface, but the technology is not as good at capturing information from the Deep Web. The Deep Web is where databases and dynamic Web pages — pages that gather information in response to users' requests — reside. A recent California Digital Library study found that about 85 percent of the Deep Web is in the .gov domain. This has been added to

The goals of the consortium are:

To enable the collection of a rich body of Internet content from around the world to be preserved in a way that it can be archived, secured and accessed over time.
To foster the development and use of common tools, techniques and standards that enable the creation of international archives.
To encourage and support national libraries everywhere to address Internet archiving and preservation.

Nelson has wirtten a fantastic post about the modern disposition of the Ultima games, including unauthorised bundles of the game's many incarnations along with easy-play emulators for running them on modern hardware.
The most impressive is the Ultima Classics collection. "Sedryn Tyros" has collected the Ultima games and distributed them in a bundle along with DOSBox setups that make it easy to run the games. His supplement also includes original pre-PC versions of the early games, often better than the PC ports, along with the emulators you need to play them on a PC. Alas, this collection is completely unauthorized and you'll have to scour your back alley's bittorrent site to find it.

Another option is fan-made reconstructions of the game engines. The best is Exult for Ultima VII, a portable engine that runs the classic game on many platforms (including Xbox!). Just take the open source game engine, copy over the assets from your Ultima Collection CD, and you're in business.

When Zero Equals Many in Windows XP

When Zero Equals Many in Windows XP 06/04/2004 09:11 AM
Wired News looks into Windows XP's dropped Wi-Fi connection problem: Daniel Terdiman tries to dig for the bodies in his search for why Windows XP drops Wi-Fi network connections inexplicably and often shows them as still active. Microsoft claims there's no systematic problem, but it's clear from reading any forum in which Wi-Fi is discussed--such as the DSLReports.com site--that this is a frequent issue. My solution, provided to me by a vendor about two years ago, of restarting Wireless Zero Configuration is explained in the article. This has solved 99 percent of my Windows XP Wi-Fi problems, but it's nestled so deeply that it's baffling. I've felt for a while that Microsoft should have a top-level interface to WZC because when it stops running, the user has no idea that anything's afoot until they drill down, down, down, and see that the setting reads "not running."...

Neuromancer radio play preservation
effort in the teeth of bureacracy
03/19/2005 03:03 AM
Cory Doctorow: A fan of the BBC radio play adaptation of William Gibson's Neuromancer has launched a one-fan preservation and distribution effort. Jody Armstrong has the audio available for download on a web-page, along with some fan-art and a plaintive disclaimer begging someone from the Beeb to return the phone-calls and emails left asking for permission to do so.
I've been trying to locate somebody at the BBC or some information in relation to redistributing this recording to allow those who were not able to hear the play to enjoy it. I have sent a letter, four e-mails via the tortuously confusing BBC Website contacts page and made over a dozen phone calls to various departments. I have left numerous voicemails as a result of these phoen calls. Nobody has responded to the messages, those I spoke too seemed to respond like a dog that had been shown a card trick and no hint as to whether I can redistribute it has been forthcoming.

If, whether it be the BBC itself, those responsibel for the play or William Gibson himself, has a problem with this distribution of the play, please bear in mind 4 things before breaking out the lawyers.

1) The bandwidth, this site and even the pretty pictures you see on this page is mine, an impoverished Gibson fan who wants to do a favour for the other fans. It's out of my pocket, I'm spending my money, be kind...

2) I have made attempts to contact you and have been ignored. True I am probably breaking copyright laws, however I am promoting 'Play of the Week', William Gibson's work and the talented people behind the radioplay.

3) E-Mail me, I'll take it down straight away.

Progress Report On National Digital Info Preservation Program
http://www.fcw.com/fcw/articles/2004/0503/mgt-campbell-05-03-04.a sp

Laura Campbell, associate librarian for strategic initiatives at the Library of Congress, says of her work spearheading the LC's collaborative National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program, "It's the best job I ever had." Campbell and her colleagues are finishing up their review of 22 proposals from potential preservation partners and are working with experts to construct a technical architecture for the preservation process. Nearly 5 terabytes of digital works characterized as "at risk" have been collected so far. They include Web pages that document recent events, such as the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and the ongoing war in Iraq. Librarians used to worry about preserving access to books and periodicals, says Campbell, but with most Web sites staying up an average of only 44 days, preserving access to them is far more complicated. In addition, the copyright issues surrounding long-term preservation of digital journals, books, and audio and video material have yet to be resolved. "There may be technological solutions that make the management of restricted material much easier," says Campbell. Because so much about digital preservation is yet unknown, Campbell says the library's strategy is to learn by doing and be prepared to make corrections along the way. She credits the many experts she consulted during the planning phase of the program with impressing upon her the need for continuing flexibility: "It helped us realize that we would always be learning and adjusting," says Campbell.

cdface.jpgFriend-of-Gizmodo Scott reviewed his heavy-duty Chase Durer Chronograph, a big, beefy quartz thing that I actually saw on the wrist of Greg Kihn last night. He was one of the contestants of Beat Me Baby One More Time or whatever it's called.

But I digress. This is a quartz chrono with PVD coated body and bracelet. It's water resistant to 1000 feet, meaning you can go diving for the lost treasure of Atlantis. In terms of underwater demolition, however, the watch does not have a remote timer/detonator even though it certainly does look like it should have one.
