Seal Clubbing 2005 kicked off in Canada

Seal Clubbing 2005 kicked off in Canada 03/30/2005 09:15 PM

Canada's seal hunt started yesterday and though I wondered if the numbers on the Protect Seals site were accurate, this somewhat gory and disturbing slideshow at Yahoo/AP news seems to support the high numbers of slaughter. There doesn't seem to be much you can do to stop seal clubbing in 2005, just boycotting Canadian seafood and calling congressfolks. Shame to see up to 300k seals killed for some fur coats -- seems so last century.

Inpro/Seal Expands Sealing System

Applications with Articulating Seal that
Handles Shaft Misalignment to Keep
Equipment Running Longer
03/14/2005 04:11 PM
Inpro/Seal has introduced their Articulating Air Mizer™-, PS a sealing system developed to positively seal equipment where dry particulates, powders and bulk solids are handled, processed, packaged and stored. Once installed, the system helps contain powders, abrasives, liquids and toxic vapors. In addition, it handles extreme shaft misalignment and deflection, common in these kinds of applications to provide a seal that traditional methods simply cannot attain.A unique design feature uses a solid wall of air that functions as a barrier for contamination and works to retain product where it should be - in the equipment. The highest levels of performance are assured by virtue of an inherent non-contact design feature that avoids direct egress of the particulate material. [PRWEB Mar 2, 2005]

Kicked out of the (opera) house

Kicked out of the (opera) house 04/22/2004 06:41 PM
Although the current 2003-04 season of New York City's Metropolitan Opera is winding down, there were two provocative additions to the existing repertoire. Previously banned and restricted from the New York stage (as well as other opera houses throughout the world), the MET offered new productions of La Juive and Salome:

Last performed during the 1935-36 season, the MET reprised Jacques Fromental Halévy's 1835 opera La Juive (The Jewess) after a 68-year absence. Set in 15th-century Constance, the story concerns a Jewish jeweler and his daughter's forbidden romance with a Christian Emperor’s son. The implications of the libretto assert religious intolerance, betrayal, and persecution of Jews, where anti-semitism is the motivating force. Conflicting theories debate whether it was pulled in the 1930's to quell the conflagration of anti-semitism, or if trends were merely shifting away from French opera.

Also reprised was Salome, Richard Strauss's 1905 opera based on Oscar Wilde's 1891 play of the same name. During the performance, Salome performs the highly erotic Dance of the Seven Veils for her stepfather Herod, striping completely naked, and then molesting the severed head of St. John. During the 1907 premier at the MET, the production was so scandalous, that it was cancelled after the first performance. It was then permanently banned until 1934, and has only been reprised four times in past 70 years. The new production continues to reflect on past debates, flagging the licentious strip tease and immoral relationship between Herod and teenaged Salome.

Sean Parker kicked out of Plaxo

Sean Parker kicked out of Plaxo 04/21/2004 03:26 AM

Although I had some problems with the Plaxo model, I hate hearing stories like this. Sean Parker, the founder and visionary behind Plaxo was kicked out rather rudely by the VCs. I don't know the details, but it sounds bad.

The company sent out an anonymous, terse statement that Parker is ``no longer with Plaxo,'' but called him a ``visionary, creative entrepreneur'' and ended with: ``We thank him for his hard work and wish him well.''

In reality, though, a source said Parker has been locked out, and everyone at the company has been instructed not to talk with Parker, except by way of the company's lawyer, Ray Hickson.

When contacted and asked whether this arrangement is ``normal,'' Hickson said: ``I can't discuss a client personnel matter with newspaper reporters.''

Parker himself issued a terse statement: ``While the company is moving to a new stage of its growth, the management team remains committed to executing my original vision,'' he said. ``The company remains in capable hands.''

I've founded several companies and as companies grow, the skills required to be the chief executive change. When I've founded (or helped found) companies in the past, I've usually stepped aside to allow someone with better administrative and sales skills to lead the company after it's up and running. This was the case with Digital Garage and PSINet Japan and to a certain extent Infoseek Japan. I seem to be the most useful getting things going, not running them.

As a VC/investor, I've seen my share of visionary CEOs who can't run the company, but we usually try to keep them involved in some way and stay on good terms so we can invest in their next good company. I don't see how you can continue being a VC in the valley being cruel to serial entrepreneurs.

Pierre Omidyar of eBay is probably one of the best examples of knowing when to bring on a real CEO, but staying involved as the founder. I think he and his investors were smart about this.

Kicked Out Of Parliament For Looking At

Kicked Out Of Parliament For Looking At
A Camera Phone
12/18/2003 03:30 PM
The latest slap down for daring to pick up a camera phone and (gasp! oh no!) look at it, was over in the UK where an MP was thrown out for checking his phone to see who had called. Someone noticed this, and informed the speaker, who kicked him out of the chamber for "using a camera". Except, he wasn't using the camera. Just looking to see who called. As he points out, if he wanted to use the camera it would be pretty obvious. Once again, you have to wonder why there's so much backlash against just having a camera phone, when the folks involved aren't doing anything bad with at all. Why are we making it a crime to possess tools that have plenty of perfectly good uses - just because there's the potential to misuse it?

Assmonkeying Mail.app needs to be kicked

09/25/2004 03:58 PM

So Mail.bloody.app has just chewed up and spat out around two-years of e-mail from my lovely Mac and not even Danny O'Brien could fix it for me, so that's pretty bloody annoying. And of course while I used to take regular back-ups, it's been just long enough after the last time that this happened for me to (1) stop taking back-ups several months ago and (2) have deleted the back-ups I had made to make space for other crap.

Which leaves me in the unenviable position of asking anyone and everyone who was expecting anything from me or had planned to do something with me or with whom I've been talking recently in pretty much any capacity to get back in touch and remind me where we'd got to in the whole bloody conversation. I feel a bit like the guy in Memento at the moment, only on a much much larger (but no less fatal) timescale.

G irl Kicked Out Of Prom For Wearing Confederate Flag Sues A girl who says it was always her dream to wear a confederate-themed dress to her prom arrived in a self-designed gown which incorporated the Confederate battle flag into its design. The school promptly removed her, and she is suing. The fate of her suit is somewhat uncertain. Lower federal courts have applied the Tinker test, which says that a school may restrict student expression when that expression may be disruptive. To win her suit, the girl will need to show that wearing a Confederate flag to your high school prom is not a disruptive act.

Search Engine Death Penalty: WhenU
Kicked Off Of Yahoo And Google

Search Engine Death Penalty: WhenU
Kicked Off Of Yahoo And Google
05/13/2004 10:40 PM
WhenU, the adware/spyware company that already has quite a bit of controversy surrounding it for both (a) sneaking their software onto users' machines and (b) then popping up competitive ads when surfers visit websites has now been removed from both Yahoo and Google searches after it was determined that they were using tricks to boost their rankings in both. WhenU blames an outside search engine optimizer who they hired, but it does raise some issues. Considering the power that sites like Google and Yahoo have over anyone finding your site, how long will it be until we hear about a lawsuit when someone sues a search engine for kicking their site out of search results?
