Ri se of the Man-Eating Cyberloo: the latest RotM, or Rise of the Machines, another regular feature at the Register like the B OFH (the link is this week's, more here). Rise of the Machines is a ultraparanoid technophobe's view of the latest happenings in and around technology - fictionalized for your delight. Here is the ROTM take on clocky (previously). Many of the episodes refer to the vario us efforts of the "lizard army" (Shades of Free Your Brain?) and their eternal enemies, the NeoLuddite Resistance Army. Take a minute to read a few, it's quite a funny theme, written well and in true cheeky Reg style. Here's the archive . For a more serious (though likely sham) example of this, try the Anti-Robot Militia.

sweeper_t2.jpg imageWith help from one of the professors' assistants, students at Hokkaido University have built this accident waiting to happen, called the "Sweeper," a sort of motorized broomstick. I'll wait for the jetpacks, myself, as I'm not much of a rollerblading man. The videos do make it look a lot more fun to use than I'd expected, I'll admit.

Lizard brain surgery

Lizard brain surgery 11/18/2003 09:16 AM
This isn't just a Windows phenomenon, of course. Every major software system has, at its core, what Dave Winer likes to call a lizard brain. The roots of Linux reach down through many layers to its lizard brain. Mac OS X archeologists can explore not only that same deep history but also a parallel 15-year NextStep legacy. Every software architect longs for a chance to reorganize -- or as they like to say, "refactor" -- to a simpler and stronger foundation for new layered abstractions. Few organizations have the resources to maintain and evolve a working system while mercilessly refactoring to produce its successor. Microsoft is among the lucky few. We'll see, in a couple of years, how well Longhorn has exploited that rare opportunity. [Full story at InfoWorld.com]
The original title of this column was "Lizard brain surgery." It was problematic because of the Mozilla echo, but I doubt that's why the editors changed it. More likely they thought it too offbeat for the print publication. ...

Soon to be even more French

Soon to be even more French 04/04/2005 08:32 AM
That thumbnail to the right is a photo of my new (er, I should say nouveau) carte d'etudiant! That's right, it's back to school for me, and starting tomorrow I will begin to study French formally so that I'll no longer have to stammer sentences like, "I look for a phone card not to put in the phone but to press the numbers on the phone to use" or "the moon, like the moon and the earth and the plane -- the Space Shuttle -- that goes there, to the space." Of course, the idea of actually speaking French properly, rather than concocting it through an assemblage of words and the application of Spanish grammar rules, saddens me a bit. I rather enjoyed walking into the pharmacy this morning (to combat my Camilla hair) with my request, "I look for the thing for the hair whose name I do not know, but it is like this," whereupon I slide two fingers into my hair to mimic a bobby pin holding it in place, "and it is not called barrette." I triumphed again! The monsieur directed me to the magasin Claire, an accessories store, where I purchased said chose.

Here's one for my foodie French-speaking soon-to-be-or-already-are-in-France friends: Les 100 meilleurs bistrots à moins de 30 €. Note: The link points to ones in Paris, see the sidebar for those outside the Île-de-France. For the non-French speakers out there, it's a list of "The 100 best 30 € and under bistros." I've been to two on the Paris list so far this visit: L'Ami Marcel (which was mentioned in the April 2005 Gourmet article "The Bistro Boom"); and L'Epi Dupin. Both were very good and I'd recommend either for a lovely meal. And see, if I were less lazy, I would have written posts about eating there! As penance, if my dinning companions post about the meals, I promise to make the appropriate links.

Anne and I have to get up at 4am on Sunday for the marathon, so all this week, we're trying to reset our internal body clocks (notice I didn't say 'circadian rhythm') a little bit earlier than normal,(so we're not in a stupor at the starting line) by getting up earlier, and walking first thing.

Oh man, it's hard. It was harder to get up this morning and walk three miles than it was to walk 13 miles on the weekend . . . but we're doing it, and it feels very good to tell myself, "Look, man, you made a commitment to this marathon, and to Kris, and to Anne, and to everyone who has supported you. Get your fat lazy ass out of bed and walk."

Tags and Stickers

Tags and Stickers 06/05/2005 10:49 PM

As I noted before in Tags and Divergence and attempted to address in Emulating Errors for Tag Convergence, tagging as practiced today could use more convergence features. While thinking about this and wiki-related problems, I came up with stickers.

I came up with the idea of stickers when I remembered the opening chapter of Snow Crash in which a girl tagged a bad driver's car with a sticker. Stickers on wiki entries? Stickers on Flickr pictures? Stickers on links?

Stickers are like graphical tags that users can attach to text or images. While textual stickers can be applied likes tags are, similar to the way adjectives work, I think graphical stickers offer better user experiences. An open system can allow users to create custom stickers and variations of stickers (like icons with modifier pieces) to help users create a graphical language. Time and effort needed to create new graphical stickers is not a liability but a convergence feature.

I think the best way to use stickers is to combine it with limits in availability and time. So a user gets N number of stickers of various types to start with and will get M more per week or month and each sticker type has specific time limits (meaning they come off after a while).

I am still not done thinking about stickers but I thought it was interesting enough as is.

Stickers on our PowerBooks

Stickers on our PowerBooks 09/07/2004 10:27 AM

As usual, there were a lot of PowerBooks at this conference. Interestingly, Esther Dyson, Lawrence Lessig, Bruce Sterling and I were the only people I noticed who had stickers on our PowerBooks. Other people who I know who have stickers on their PowerBooks are Mena Trott and Cory Doctorow. I wonder what this means? What do those of us who are willing to vandalize our pristine PowerBooks with stickers have in common?

Anyway, just an observation...

Boing Boing reader Beej says:
Griffin's stated range for the iTrip is a little inaccurate: I once left my iPod playing over the radio in the office, got in my car and drove out of the parking lot, around the corner and down the street. The signal petered out at about 150 feet. This is through the walls of my office and several intervening buildings! I've been running around for the past several months with this bumper sticker on my car. It's an ink-jet job and as you can see, it's getting a little faded. I figure that anyone that can read the bumper sticker-- on the I-5, at a stop light-- if intrigued could tune in and listen to whatever I'm listening to. No, I don't take requests.
