Chicago's public sculpture can't be
photographed by the public

Chicago's public sculpture can't be
photographed by the public
02/07/2005 02:07 AM
Cory Doctorow: Chicago spent $270 million on its Millennium Park, placing a big public sculpture by Anish Kapoor in the middle of it, bought with public money. Woe betide any member of the public who tries to photograph this sculpture, though: it's a copyrighted sculpture and Chicago is spending even more money policing Chicagoans who try to photograph it and make a record of what their tax-dollars bought.

If I were them, I'd ask for my money back. What kind of jerk sculptor sells the city a piece of public art for a public park and then demands that no one take pictures of it? Christ, they should run this guy out of town on a rail and melt the goddamned sculpture down for scrap. Then they should fire the politician who signed a purchase contract that reserved the photographic rights and run him out of town on the same rail. Between the artist's greed and the procurement officer's malfeasance, this is about the vilest display of human venality I've heard of all day.

The copyrights for the enhancements in Millennium Park are owned by the artist who created them. As such, anyone reproducing the works, especially for commercial purposes, needs the permission of that artist.

The Tube Lamp

The Tube Lamp 08/30/2004 08:08 AM

TubeLamp6DSharpNoLogo.jpg imageI'm sort of in love with this Tube Lamp by Nik Willmore, which is a really dangerous thing since he lives and works right here in New York. At $225, though, it's almost cheap enough to just get and justify as a heirloom or something. Here's your inheritance, kids, and it glows!

Oh, and if you are worried about getting one just because the bulbs might burn out, apparently the 25-watt tubular bulbs can be gotten almost anywhere, even Home Depot. And of course, you can't forget the finishing touch - the control knob is a chromed replacement for a Fender Telecaster.

Tube escalators to get video ads

Tube escalators to get video ads 04/04/2005 08:05 AM
Cory Doctorow: The London Underground railway (AKA "the tube") has the world's most amazing escalators -- escalator after escalator, ear-poppingly-long marvels of diagonal transport. It's common to see advertisers buying up an entire escalator's worth of ad-space, producing a kind of public transit Burma Shave moment, with each installment heaving into view as the escalator carries you upward.

Now Viacom is piloting video ads -- with audio -- on flat panel displays on the tube escalators. Given how many stickers, blobs of strategically placed chewing gum, and markered-over bon mots you see on the paper ads, this seems an extraordinarily expensive proposition. Yet it does open up the possibility of some pretty cool little films that are optimized to be played in a series of diagonally placed screens to a moving audience. It remains to be seen whether any of the advertisers will rise to it, or whether we'll just get shorter TV commercials.

In a few weeks, Viacom Outdoor plans to start installing 66 screens in the London Underground that are essentially video posters with changing text and animated images. The animated signs are made of liquid crystals that realign under electrical stimulation.

Visiting every tube stop in Zone 1

Visiting every tube stop in Zone 1 07/09/2004 05:19 AM
Ewan, a Scotsman living in London, is moving back to Edinburgh, and before he does, he has resolved to visit every tube station in Zone 1, and he's inviting the general public along on his tube-crawl:
Here's the deal, I'll be starting at 12.30 on a weekday in the last week of July (probably Friday the 30th July, but don't quote me just yet). If you'd like to join me as I rattle round Central London and visiting every station of note (and Hyde Park Corner) then make sure you're at Vauxhall Ticket Office for around 12.20 to find me.

Anyone wishing to set up a Rival team to try and beat me on the day is more than welcome, I'd only ask you to also start at Vauxhall with us. Once it's all over, we'll retire to a pub at around 4pm for a late lunch/early dinner, some farewell drinks, and I'll invite you all to the housewarming in Edinburgh.

That's right; a tube sock to hold an iPod, and it's up for grabs on eBay. From the looks of the pictures linked to the auction, it's not even a new sock.

The thought process that went into developing this product must've really been something. A true creative genius at work. I wonder if he'd mind if I borrowed his idea and marketed it myself... I smell an opportunity!
