Can iPod stand on its own footprint?

Can iPod stand on its own footprint? 09/18/2004 12:52 PM
A recent <A HREF="http://www.forbes.com/technology/2004/09/17/cx_ah_0917tente ch.html">article</A> on Forbes.com about the Apple/Beatles lawsuit contains an interesting footnote that brings to light and an more interesting question: Can the iPod name survive without the Apple brand? While the reverse is already being tested by Hewlett Packard, it remains to be see whether any of Apple's products can survive without their namesake. For all of Apple's unique and unmistakable designs, what would happen if the Apple was removed from the front of the iMac? Or the 23-inch Cinema Display? Or the back of the iPod? Forbes seems to think that a move away from the Apple name and symbol "would harm its prospects not one bit. "The iPod brand is turning out to be as powerful a brand name as that of its corporate parent. By itself, it's also free of any expensive encumbrances involving musicians who haven't done anything terribly interesting in the last few years (i.e., The Beatles)." The iPod name is certainly strong enough to exist on its own, but would there be any benefit (aside from the Apple/AppleCorps dispute)? Could Apple create better computers — or better music players — if the pressure was off to do both under the same moniker? I'd like to personally think not, and with the unveiling of the latest iteration of the iMac, it seems that Steve Jobs & Co. can certainly do both, and do it well, if not borrowing from the other side along the way. The iPod is as much Apple as it is its own individual namesake, but splitting the two would likely cause separation anxiety for one — or even both — parties. It's not secret that the iPod has brought Apple back to major player status, and while it may be true that Apple the computer company has ridden Apple the music company to new heights, they most certainly need each other to survive. I mean, just take a look at <A HREF"www.apple.com">Apple.com</A>…

Cory Doctorow: Piers sez, "Seeing as the new iPods don't come with docks, and no-one wants to spend $30+ on a bit of plastic or metal to stand their iPods on, I've drawn up a template for a simple, functional and attractive iPod stand you can download as a pdf, print out, stick on some card and assemble. It's also released under a Creative Commons licence so anyone can distribute it or make improvements to the design and re-distribute it." Link (Thanks, Piers!)

Apple Wants 10% Of Any Made For iPod

Apple Wants 10% Of Any Made For iPod
Product Sales
03/17/2005 03:26 AM
There have been a number of stories lately about the economy built around the iPod, with a ton of accessories on the market thanks to this one single device. Back in January, Apple announced that it was going to start a "Made for iPod" marketing program that would let accessory makers add a special logo to their products or marketing materials. What wasn't reported, however, was that Apple wants 10% of the wholesale price on any "made for iPod" products (backed down from 10% of the retail price). This sort of thing isn't that uncommon, but taking 10% just so you can use an specific logo seems a bit steep. What's to stop a company from just pointing out that their product was made to work with the Apple iPod -- without using the specific trademarked phrase of logo?

The AirClick Remote is different from most iPod remote controls because it works using Radio Frequency (RF) technology instead of infrared, so it doesn't require a line of sight to the iPod and can operate up to 60 feet away, according to Griffin. It's shipping now for US$39.99.

Win an iPod mini at the South Beach iPod Garage Party

What's cooler than hanging with your fellow iPod users on Miami's South Beach on September 1st? How about going home with a brand new iPod mini in your pocket?

Yeah, that probably got your attention. But thanks to event sponsors iPodResQ, the iPod mini is just one prize among many that we'll be giving away at the South Beach iPod Garage Party. So what do you have to do to win? All you have to do is show up with your iPod, connect it to our sound system, and play "DJ" for twelve minutes as you share the highlights of your own music library with the rest of us (as many songs as you like, as long as it fits within the time limit). Yep, it's your very own twelve minutes of fame.

The RoadTrip plugs into any 12-volt outlet or cigarette lighter in your car and its transmitter unit can be removed and plugged into a USB port on your computer, enabling music broadcast from it to any nearby FM stereo. SendStation Systems and RadTech have released two new PocketDock models and MiniSleevz for iPod mini, respectively. SendStation's PocketDock is an adapter that allows users to connect their iPods to their Macs with standard FireWire cables instead of Apple's docking cables. The company's new PocketDock Combo (US$22.95) contains USB and FireWire ports that accept standard USB cables as well as 6-pin FireWire cables. The PocketDo ck Line Out ($29.95) also features a 6-pin FireWire port but adds a 3.5mm (1/8-inch) stereo jack that bypasses the iPod's headphones amplifier for better sound quality when connecting the MP3 player to external speakers. It comes with two six-foot white audio cables. Both PocketDock models are available now and are compatible with Apple's 10, 15, 20, 30 and 40GB iPods, as well as the iPod mini.
