Still, imagine the excitement of a three hour movie detailing the intricacies of drying paint. Unfortunately, as fast as it is, it can only shoot 100 frames at a time—oh, and it costs $200,000. Still, it won't be long before we'll be able to watch paint dry in color.

Wunderkind novelist Jonathan Safran Foer and badboy British artist Damien Hirst make unrelated appearances in this week's New York Times magazine. Unrelated, but for this nice coincidence in how the Net has affected each artist's craft.

From the Jonathan Safran Foer profile:

Full-page photographs, all in arty black-and-white, are woven into the narrative, and typography is at times deployed toward pictorial ends. Page 26, for example, comes with only one tiny word -- ''Help'' -- marooned in a vast desert of white. At the opposite extreme, Page 284 is so crowded with words printed on top of words that you cannot decipher them, except as a vertical slab of black, a tombstone of type, or perhaps (like the photograph on Page 318) a velvety night sky. The book also includes a dozen or so grainy newslike photographs that risk offense by appropriating the image of a body falling from the towers -- albeit a digitally simulated image -- for artistic gain.

''The moment when I chose to put the photographs in the book,'' Foer said, ''I was browsing around the Internet. I couldn't believe what I was looking at -- beheadings, C-sections, shark attacks, people jumping from planes with broken parachutes. It made me wonder what it must be like to be young right now. Kids are subjected to images that adults aren't because a) their curiosity for the grotesque is greater and b) their ability to access it is greater.''

From the Damient Hirst in terview:

NYT: [Can we] expect to see seascapes in your show?

DH: No. There are 30 paintings in the show, and most of them are based on photographs from newspapers and magazines.

NYT: I'm sorry to hear that. It seems that most painters today are basing their work on photographs.

DH: There are so many images in the world. An artist doesn't really need to create anymore.

Headings as Images...Or Not

Headings as Images...Or Not 06/30/2004 10:45 PM

Dynamic Text Replacement: Look at this page. It looks like someone did all their headings as images, which hides the text from search engines and has huge usability problems...but then look at the source. It's all good 'ol HTML.

I haven't read the article that explains how to do it, but I'm guessing they use JavaScript to find and replace the H2 tags with IMG tags that use the innerHTML of the H2 as a querystring argument. Then they have a server-side page that renders the headings using GD or ImageMagi ck, and returns the result as an image.

DIY astronomical images 07/09/2004 11:33 AM
heic0412cThe European Space Agency, the European Southern Observatory, and NASA just released a free Photoshop plug-in that gives anyone access to archival astronomical images and spectra from the Hubble Space Telescope, the Spitzer Space Telescope, and others:
"If there is anything that unites astronomy, it is the worldwide use of a single file format - nearly all the images of stars and galaxies produced by telescopes on the ground and in space are stored as so-called FITS files. Unfortunately this file format has been accessible to very few people other than professional scientists using highly specialised image-processing tools."
The ESA/ESO/NASA Photoshop FITS Liberator provides direct access to the full 16-bit color images. For example, this image of the planetary nebula NGC 5979 was made with the FITS Liberator by compositing four individual exposures taken through various filters. Link

UK Civil Servants download 2 Million+
Porn Images
08/27/2004 01:56 PM
UK tabloid The Sun is reporting that 227 UK Civil Servants in the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) have been disciplined for downloading pornographic images whilst at work. The Sun reports that some 2 million images were viewed, as well as some involving child pornography / abuse. Of the 227, 16 were sacked, one has been prosecuted, and the rest have been able to continue their jobs at the Government department.

Liberal Democrat Steve Webb (Lib Dem DWP Spokesperson) believed that the government should introduce a 'zero-tolerance' policy across all departments when it came to pornography. "Any public servant who accesses porn sites at work should lose their jobs" Webb commented.

A spokesperson for the DWP said that regular checks took place on staff computers for pornography; any staff caught would be investigated. However, they also commented that many investigations into pornographic material was due to staff inadvertently clicking a link that brought them to the page, rather than an intentional action. The Sun claims the most recent check was sparked off after a DWP employee was caught watching porn at work.

Time To Drop Song Download Costs

Time To Drop Song Download Costs 09/20/2004 03:07 PM
We've been waiting patiently for the inevitable price war to break out in the online music download store world, but so far it's (mostly) held up due to the high fees the recording industry continues to charge. Now, Newsweek's tech columnist Steven Levy, is pointing out that if the recording industry dropped their fees, they'd sell a lot more music. He thinks that sooner or later, the industry has to realize that they'll do even better if prices are cheaper. He points to Real Networks' experience (which is a bit skewed since it was a promotional plan) in dropping the price by half -- but which allowed them to sell six times as many songs. If this ratio were to hold (a big "if" obviously, since it assumes people will spend more overall) then the industry would end up making a lot more money by cutting their price -- but, instead, of course, they're all looking for ways to raise prices or force people to buy bad songs to get good songs.

Mark Frauenfelder: Todd Lappin has finished installing his 707 jet panel in his house. It looks incredible!
7900634 Ef15D64C4D M This hangs on one wall of our living room, above the stairway that leads down to the garage. As you walk up the steps, you get this view.

My 707 has come a long way since I first found it at an aircraft scrapyard in Tucson. Here's a daylight view, shortly after I stripped off the paint. The illumination comes from rope lights mounted on the structurally-cool back side. (Next time you rest your head against a window-seat wall to snooze, this is basically what lies underneath.)
