Notes from Heikki Tuuri's InnoDB Multiple Tablespaces and Compressed Tables talk at the 2004 MySQL User's Conference... Heikki spent quite some time as an academic doing math and later computer science. He wrote the first line of code in 1994 and was trying to figure out why relational databases were so slow. Five years later he had 110,000 lines of code and could run a TPC-C benchmark. He met Monty in 2000. Work in the InnoDB/MySQL interface began shortly after...

Nothing runs like a Beagle!

Nothing runs like a Beagle! 12/30/2004 04:24 PM
The Beagle Bros Software Online Museum - "a tribute to the coolest software company of the 80's." These guys made my Apple II childhood just a little more magical. The museum includes their ever-informative diskette care warning labels and a less-than-useful but inside joke-filled FAQ. The Beagle Bros Wikipedia entry also has a lot of fun tidbits.

They also had very funny and clever ads (found on this great Apple II history page). The ads always contained these amazing little 2-liners, Applesoft BASIC programs that made my 11 year-old head spin trying to figure out the PEEKs and POKEs that turned Applesoft BASIC from a toy into a pretty powerful tool.

This bout of nostalgia started when I discovered, via this boingboing post, that you could play I/O Silver online (ActiveX)! (only the greatest puzzle game I've ever owned. And hard as heck, too.)

Eco-bus runs on taco grease

Eco-bus runs on taco grease 12/24/2004 12:29 PM
Xeni Jardin: In Mexico City, a group of ecologists are wandering from taqueria to taqueria in search of waste cooking oil to fuel an old school bus for an environmental awareness tour from California to Costa Rica.
The bus, which ran on avocado oil during a week-long drive down from the U.S. border, is being used to prove that vehicles can run on recycled fuels that pollute less than gasoline as it chugs around oil refineries, factories and eateries collecting vegetable oil.

"We're running low, we have to score some oil today," said environmentalist Zak Zaidman as crew members called around the greasiest-sounding eateries in the city's phone directory.

Our Iliad

Our Iliad 05/15/2004 11:41 AM
Ian Brown writes in Canada's Globe and Mail about how Abu Ghraib looks to someone immersed in The Iliad. It's impressionistic — at one point, it's Europe that's sulking in its tent, and at another Donald Rumsfeld is the modern stand-in for Achilles — but it's also splendid. I, too, have been reading the Robert Fagles translation, which is both muscular and lyrical, and it's hard not to see the Iraq war through its lens. Homer does something that our accounts of our war have not: He conveys the sweep of the war by showing, one at a time,...

Ca mera Phones Help Buyers Beware

"During the past six months, no fewer than four software firms have released applications to help consumers turn their camera-equipped mobile phones into personal bar-cod e scanners....

Although the technologies are still in their early stages, the trend is rekindling talk of a shopping revolution.

'Clearly, this is going to change the way people think about shopping,' said Olivier Attia, chief executive of New York-based Scanbuy, one of the firms specializing in bar-code-scanning software.

For example, 'with a camera phone that is also a bar-code scanner, you can go into a store like Barnes & Noble, take a photo of the ISBN number on a book and instantly receive a coupon offering the book for 30 percent less at Amazon.com,' said Attia." [Wired News]

Of course, I think the better example is that a person could scan an ISBN and automatically request the title from their local library!

Book Scanning at Stanford

Book Scanning at Stanford 01/22/2004 12:57 PM

The Book & The Computer: Another great article about digitizing books in a library at Stanford. I have to stifle the goosebumps when I read about this stu ff.

When you're turning pages by hand, you can do maybe 150 to 200 pages per hour. It's slow. But the robot can easily do 600 to 1,200 pages per hour without damaging the books. And it's rigorously consistent -- the page is always flat, the image is always good, and software conversion allows you to index the text so you can search it.

This entry is dedicated to Jenny, who says we all don't talk about libraries enough. :-)

Chunking and scanning RSS feeds

Chunking and scanning RSS feeds 03/13/2003 10:15 AM
I've been somewhat surprised to find myself preferring the Radio UserLand aggregator to the others I also use: NetNewsWire and NewsGator. Last night I realized why: it's a matter of chunking and scanning. In RU, I scan and dismiss batches of 100 items. On a typical day, when I receive a few hundred items, that's just a couple of clicks -- modulo any additional effort to save or respond to an item. In NetNewsWire and NewsGator, it's more of an item-by-item thing. There are consolidated views available, but they display headlines (or truncated previews) only. Processing a lot of feeds feels like more work. ...
