Getting Kids To Program Old School Video
Games
04/06/2005 06:48 AMIt seems that every recent story about Atari has been about their
attempts (in their modern form -- quite different from the original
Atari) to
make
a killing on the nostalgia market, offering up classic games from
years back to today's adults -- either on computers or (increasingly)
on mobile phones. However, it appears that many feel the basic
concepts of old Atari videogames are still valuable for game designers
to learn -- resulting in a
competition to design new games for the Atari 2600. Of
course, there's one twist: the games needed to be created in 24 hours.
While the story is amusing to read, what it really does is remind
people that, despite all the amazing graphics found in today's game, a
game is still about
gameplay at its core -- which many of
today's game designers seem to forget.

Putting Media Literacy In The Elementary
School Curriculum
Putting Media Literacy In The Elementary
School Curriculum
03/08/2004 11:04 PMSince much of what we seem to focus on here is about the way various
people and organizations "spin" stories to prove a point, I think it's
increasingly important that people learn (at an early age, if
possible) to be skeptical about how ideas are presented to them, and
learn to be more discerning in asking deeper questions and looking for
additional context. That's why it's encouraging to find out that many
schools are adding a "media literacy" component to their
English programs, where students learn just how easy it is to
manipulate or spin a message. While some complain that this is just
teaching kids "pop culture", I would disagree. It's a way to help
develop critical thinking skills at a very young age. In a world
where everyone seems focused on only presenting their side of the
story, getting people, at a very young age, to realize that there are
many sides (not just two) to every story is important - and is likely
to be a very practical skill for anyone to have. Of course, already,
you do have to wonder who they get to teach these courses, and if
they'll have their own spin to put on it as well. Perhaps such
courses should have multiple teachers with multiple points of view,
just to prove the point. Found via
JD's New Media Musings.

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot?
A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot?
12/18/2003 12:58 PMIt took years for researchers to figure out how to make a robot be
able to stand and walk on two legs. In fact, it's so complicated,
that some researchers are giving up on that idea and
using
Segway balancing technology on their robots instead of legs.
However, the folks at Sony seem to have taken the concept of the
upright walking robot one step further: they've figured out
how to make a
robot run. That's right, it actually leaves the ground at
points while jogging along. It apparently needs a bit of a walking
start to get up to speed, and even at running speed, it's more of a
slow jog - where it's feet barely leave the ground. Still, it's a
start, and with some more work, they believe they can really make the
robot run.
Robotics: Grow Up!
Robotics: Grow Up!
06/17/2005 07:12 PMLance Ulanoff of PC Magazine says, "Robotics:
Grow Up!" and then tells the robotics industry to gets its act
together. Lance does a great job in bringing to light what's wrong
with the robotics industry by recollecting his experiences with a
recent robotics trade show. Sadly, a lot of his points are completely
correct. The robotics industry appears to be mired in myopic, over-
schooled robotic geeks making piddly wall-detection robots that no one
wants nor can they sell. His solution? Simplify your robot and run a
cost-benefit analysis to see if it will sell. He says the Roomba
meets that cost-benefit criterion. Check out the article to find out
more about Lance's interesting observations.

Anderson of the Dallas Personal

combined review of two books recently added to the DPRG library,
"Cambrian
Intelligence The Early History of the New AI" by Rodney A.

One of the books is based on the traditional

Brook's behavior-based

This difference makes them ideal for a comparative review. Readers may
also wish to read the review of the Siegwart and
