VW Concept R 03/14/2005 06:18 PM
Wrrooom, wrrrom. A couple of years ago Volkswagen showed their Concept R (higher resolution pictures) at an autoshow. VW Vortex says that they are going to build it. And that it's going to be cheap. They are talking about competing with the Mazda Miata. The Porsche 911 got nice round headlights again instead of the oval blobs and is just amazingly beautiful. I like the look of the VW until I see a picture of the 911. I can't...

Longhorn Concept Videos 09/24/2004 04:17 PM
We've talked about these videos a while ago. Microsoft has since added a few more videos, each of them offering a detailed look at not only the new technologies but the potential applications for them. All of the presentations look at Avalon, Indigo, and other technologies to be featured in Longhorn.

Telecoms Video : "In this demo, Carter depicts a Longhorn call center application that coordinates internal and external Web Services to assist a stranded motorist."

Government Video :"Describe[s] how Accela helps cities set the bar for next-generation Emergency Response Services. Government agencies, citizens, and businesses collaborate efficiently to prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies by taking advantage of the advanced data, communications, and visualization capabilities in Windows. This video covers technology to be delivered in 2005, as well as demonstrating platform advances coming in Longhorn in 2006."

David Weller is the commentator on most of the videos, and has an interesting blog here.

The Whole Concept Of Television Is
Changing... Or Is It?

The Whole Concept Of Television Is
Changing... Or Is It?
11/13/2003 12:29 PM
Television hasn't really changed all that much over the past few decades, but a lot of things are happening in the space these days. People are increasingly interested in having a central digita l hub in their homes that will store and manage both television programs, and their own created content. The article points to a study done by the Internet Home Alliance (who isn't often shy about painting the picture they'd like to see for the future - which involves many of their member companies having lots of new products to sell). I don't think it's surprising that they found many people who claim they want a central digital video hub, but the actual implementation might not be so easy. Ignoring the whole broad cast flag issue, and how that might complicate this vision, such a device would need to work exceptionally well for it to gain traction. It's a pretty complex system, but would need to be easy to set up and easy to use, while still offering the functionality that people want. It's certainly possible, but it might take some time. At the same time, other studies are pointing out the fairly obvious fact that digital video recorders are going to change how television advertising works. Lots of people have been saying this for years, but the broadcast industry is finally coming to terms with it. Of course, they'll probably end up going the route of the recording and movie industries and make life more difficult for people, instead of embracing the new technology. Meanwhile, the NY Times is reporting that Sprint PCS is going to let people watch streaming TV on their mobile phones. At 2 frames per second. Two... Frames... Per... Second... That's not television. That's a bunch of still images, on a one inch screen - and knowing most streaming technology, they will probably be pretty blocky still images. Did I mention that it will also cost $10/month? Seems like a limited upside on that one. I'll probably have my home digital hub up and running before I'm watching TV on my mobile phone.

Embrio, Bombardier's new concept monowheel -- balanced by gyros -- is pretty cool looking, and like all good vapoourware vehicles, it is powered by magic hydrogen fuel-cells. Also: night-vision and ATV-style active suspension. I love the fact that the lines are visibly CAD-generated. You can almost see the nurb and spline handles depending from the curves. Bluebird Bluetooth Luggage Tag Concept 07/09/2004 01:27 PM

bluebird2_sm.jpg imageThere are a variety of great gadget ideas in IDFuel's first "Bonfire" gadget contest, including the winner, the "Bluebird" Bluetooth luggage tag. Besides lighting up when the bag tag's owner presses the mated dongle, the Bluebird could also signal your cell phone when your luggage is nearby -- as in nearby on the airline conveyer belt. In addition, your contact information could be stored on the tag, so if your luggage were to be lost, airline Bluetooth readers could be used to get in touch with you. There are even more great ideas detailed for the Bluebird, as well as other runners-up in the competition.

Blade Runner Dualmode Concept

Blade Runner Dualmode Concept 08/02/2004 02:08 PM

br2_dualmode.jpg image

The Blade Runner Dualmode is a concept vehicle from UK firm Silvertip Design that aims to take out the middleman between tractor-trailers and conventional freight trains. Currently in 1/8th-scale working model, the Blade Runner can operate on normal highways, then easily switch to running on standard train rails, using a fifth-wheel to stay on the tracks but continuing to use the rubber tires on the rails for acceleration and braking. The concept as designed could haul over 105 passengers or 115 cubic meters of freight. Somehow I have a feeling this one won't see the light of day, but best of luck to them.

Longhorn Concept Video: Manufacturing

Longhorn Concept Video: Manufacturing 04/09/2004 07:56 PM
Longhorn helps you deliver "shop-floor to top-floor" automation in manufacturing. Tighter markets and cost pressures have forced manufacturers to shorten all aspects of the product lifecycle, including the time that it takes to deploy new manufacturing processes to the factory floor. Longhorn's new communication infrastructure, code-named "Indigo," combines the speed and interoperability necessary to achieve the levels of integration and agility required by today's manufacturing enterprise.

Attakus Metal Collection : The Concept 12/04/2003 11:53 AM
As previously reported, Attakus will be including Star Wars sculpts in their Metal range. Figurines will be between 4 cm and 12 cm tall and will have a non-removable base that will serve as scenery. A diorama in resin to display all the statues is also in study but has not yet received the design approval of Lucasfilm. The concept is very similar to their Peter Pan set but with accurate sculpts. First finished prototypes are expected in April 2004 and statues should be available at retail in September 2004. Thanks to the great staff of Attakus for the infos.

Xeni Jardin: The "Gravity" lamp reclines and goes to sleep when you're not in the room. When you enter, it awakens, stands up, and turns on.

Fun Furde says, "The Gravity is equal parts cute and creepy. Cute because it's sort of like a pet that's happy to see you when you come home. Creepy because it's a lamp that moves by itself! No idea if they're actually going to make this or how much it will cost if they do. Or how they keep the lightbulb from smashing when it hits the ground."
