iAudio U2 Flash Player
iAudio U2 Flash Player
07/29/2004 09:59 AM
Korea-based iAudio (whose
products sell in the West under the Cowon and JetAudio brands) has
released a new flash MP3 player model, the U2, which is slightly
smaller than a lighter, but is still available in sizes up to
one gigabyte. All the other goodies we've come to expect from flash
players are there, too (FM receiver and recording, USB 2.0, irritating
burning sensation), and still the U2 manages a (claimed) 20 hour
battery life -- rechargeable battery, that is, not AAA like many other
flash players.
Looks okay! I've been very cool on flash players, having been
disappointed by so many for so long, but they are getting very usable
and very useful now that storage sizes have gotten affordable. At $350
it's still spendy compared to hard disk players, but come on; the
thing isn't much bigger than many players' in-line
displays.

I4U reviews the Muzio JM-200 flash player, a
run-of-the-mill music player with a few stand out features, like a
physically spinning volume wheel, two-color OLED screen, and the
ability to add your own custom graphics to the front of its display.
Other than that we're looking at what has become almost stock standard
on flash players, including an FM tuner with recording, voice and
line-in recording, and TrueBass (something so common I rarely even
bother mentioning it).
Another nice thing - and this is going to start being standard
pretty much soon - is the JM-200 is a USB host device, meaning it's
conceivable you could hook this music player directly into your camera
(or whatever) and copy over files. Oh! And you can listen from two
sets of headphones into a single unit.
I guess this isn't quite as stock standard as I had let on.

official Wal-Mart parlance). I wish the 256MB player could accept SD
cards bigger than 512MB, but for a cut-rate player it looks like they

Rave-MP AMP 128 Flash Player Reviewed
09/08/2004 10:24 AM
I used to hate flash memory players, but I'm coming
around, and for one single reason: they're a commodity now. Being
cheap - this Rave-MP AMP 128 reviewed by PCWorld is only $100, and
will go for even less soon - means that I can keep a flash player
around as a backup to a hard-disk player, something to take out into
the rain maybe or throw in a bag that's going to get roughed around,
and never give it a second thought. Plus 1GB SD cards a sickeningly
cheap these days (sickening when you consider how much money you spent
on flash memory in the past).
What sells the AMP 128 specifically, though? I dunno, really - the
feature set on these things is almost exactly the same these days -
but it does have that inverted-color display, which I saw in person a
few weeks back, and is actually pretty cool.

(not that this is necessarily in error). That being said, I'm glad to

YP-T5 "World's Smallest" YP-T5 flash player, the YP-ST5. Although the
form factor is pretty much the same, the battery life has been bumped
from 8 hours of playback to 20, USB 2.0 support is in, and an updated
firmware (around August or so) will add OGG Vorbis support.
Also, reheated fried calamari has the delicate taste and texture of

So this 'MP3-Car' is sort of
interesting, if cheap looking. It looks like the idea is that you plug
any USB flash drive into the FM transmitter base, which then
presumably just reads file with an .mp3 extension off the drive an
plays it. It has a line out, as well, that deactivates the FM
broadcasting when in use. Problem is, the Anyware.com site that has
the picture doesn't have a price or a 'buy now' link, and if the
Altech MP3-WM32 or MP3-RF38 are the same units, the price is listed as
$118. Without an integrated LCD screen at least, I'm thinking $40 is
more like it.

WiMax From WalMart?
WiMax From WalMart?
08/10/2004 03:53 AMOver at the Institute for the Future, they're wondering if
WalMart might end up
getting into the broadband business by hooking up WiMax base
stations (once such equipment is actually available) on all their
stores, covering much of the US in broadband. It's an interesting
theory, and gets the attention of those who think that telecoms are a
dying breed. Of course, it's really not that easy. Over at
TheFeature, I've written up a longer piece looking at some of the
challenges a
company like WalMart might face in offering broadband services.
However, it's certainly not impossible to count them out. After all,
who thought Starbucks would be in the internet access business in the
first place? If you take that to a larger scale, perhaps Walmart
could get into the WiMax business as well. A more interesting
question, however, may be how the world is going to look when there
are plenty of "virtual" network operators, where one company offers up
their brand for others to put on a network. Virgin has built up quite
a set of businesses doing this, and in the mobile space, MVNOs are a
hot topic. However, could companies do this for just about any kind
of telecom/broadband offering... and more to the point, is there a
real benefit in doing so? It's cool for a big brand name company to
think they can suddenly get into a technology services business just
by licensing out their brand name, but won't there be some risks (a la
AT&T'
s annoyance with AT&T Wireless' trampling of the brand) and some
questions about just why you want to buy your internet service from
Coca-Cola?
The Walmart Laptop
The Walmart Laptop
08/17/2004 09:00 PMJust in time for back-to-school shopping, Walmart puts out an ultra-cheap laptop for under $600.
It's an ECS
A535, and comes with an Athlon 1.6GHz processor, 14" screen,
wireless networking, and XP Home Edition.
As expected, Walmart continues its push of
cheap imports with little regard for anything but its own bottom
line.
I guess it's good for the US economy in one respect; cheap hardware
like this will undoubtedly keep support guys plenty busy. And at that
price you might as well buy two; one for a backup or for spare
parts.

WalMart tried to confiscate journo's
camera
01/06/2005 04:49 AMCory Doctorow:
A naked man streaked a Wal-Mart in Maryland, and a freelance news
photographer snapped some pics. Wal-Mart sent out a goon who demanded
that he turn over his camera and not take or publish photos of
Wal-Mart without permission.
"He said if I didn't turn the camera over to him, he would have me
arrested" and ban him from the store, Roy said.
Attorney Mary R. Craig, who represents The Herald-Mail, said Roy
"certainly was well within his rights" to take pictures.
The store can set limits, such as on taking pictures inside, but the
expectation of privacy probably is less outside, she said.
She said Roy probably didn't violate anyone's privacy, especially the
naked man's.
Alice Neff Lucan, an attorney who represents the
Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association, said Wal-Mart "emphatically"
had no right to demand Roy's camera.
"He didn't violate any of Wal-Mart's rights and he didn't violate the
streaker's rights," she said. "He just took a picture of what was in
the public's view."

stampede

rushed to Vanlester. She was knocked unconscious. She was airlifted to
Halifax Medical Center.Read...
