Pilot Electronics MP-08 Flash Player

Pilot Electronics MP-08 Flash Player 03/30/2005 02:03 PM

mp-08_pilot.jpgThere isn't a whole lot going on with this Pilot Electronics MP-08 flash player except a weird shape, but that's good enough for a post in these days of escalating gadget lust. It doesn't even have a screen or play non-MP3 file formats, but it's sort of neat in its way. I wouldn't want it around my neck, but it would look good at the next Star Trek convention.

iAudio U2 Flash Player

iAudio U2 Flash Player 07/29/2004 09:59 AM

iaudiou2.jpg imageKorea-based iAudio (whose products sell in the West under the Cowon and JetAudio brands) has released a new flash MP3 player model, the U2, which is slightly smaller than a lighter, but is still available in sizes up to one gigabyte. All the other goodies we've come to expect from flash players are there, too (FM receiver and recording, USB 2.0, irritating burning sensation), and still the U2 manages a (claimed) 20 hour battery life -- rechargeable battery, that is, not AAA like many other flash players.

Looks okay! I've been very cool on flash players, having been disappointed by so many for so long, but they are getting very usable and very useful now that storage sizes have gotten affordable. At $350 it's still spendy compared to hard disk players, but come on; the thing isn't much bigger than many players' in-line displays.

Muzio JM-200 Flash Player Reviewed 08/09/2004 07:27 AM

muziojm200_buttons.jpg imageI4U reviews the Muzio JM-200 flash player, a run-of-the-mill music player with a few stand out features, like a physically spinning volume wheel, two-color OLED screen, and the ability to add your own custom graphics to the front of its display. Other than that we're looking at what has become almost stock standard on flash players, including an FM tuner with recording, voice and line-in recording, and TrueBass (something so common I rarely even bother mentioning it).

Another nice thing - and this is going to start being standard pretty much soon - is the JM-200 is a USB host device, meaning it's conceivable you could hook this music player directly into your camera (or whatever) and copy over files. Oh! And you can listen from two sets of headphones into a single unit.

I guess this isn't quite as stock standard as I had let on.

msi_528.jpgMSI has upgraded its Mega Stick 527 with the aptly-named Mega Stick 528. Available in 512MB and 1GB versions, this flash player/radio/recorder offers 18 hours of playback on a single AAA battery. It is not a beautiful looking flash player, but this is not a beautiful world. They’re aiming for the $100 price point for the 512MB version—screen included.

Dubbed the N10 (INTENZ!), the unit will be offered in 128MB, 256MB, and 512MB options. Apparently, the N10 already sells in Europe for around $360 (yeah, no way, right?). Flash players are extremely neat in function and size, but pricing like that is just painful.

Wal-Mart iLo Flash Player Reviewed 12/22/2004 01:36 AM

ilo_review.jpg image"When Gizmodo speaks, people listen." And then void themselves, as we broadcast the same colliding frequency undertones played at a GWAR concert. But besides the big squishy handjob that Gadget Madness gives us, this review of the iLo Digital Audio Player—that new $80 Wal-Mart special—gets 'er done (to use official Wal-Mart parlance). I wish the 256MB player could accept SD cards bigger than 512MB, but for a cut-rate player it looks like they do almost everything right. Rather than cluttering it up with fancy, but half-assed engineered software, they just make a simple player that works with Macs and PCs.

Rave-MP AMP 128 Flash Player Reviewed 09/08/2004 10:24 AM

rave_amp128.jpg imageI used to hate flash memory players, but I'm coming around, and for one single reason: they're a commodity now. Being cheap - this Rave-MP AMP 128 reviewed by PCWorld is only $100, and will go for even less soon - means that I can keep a flash player around as a backup to a hard-disk player, something to take out into the rain maybe or throw in a bag that's going to get roughed around, and never give it a second thought. Plus 1GB SD cards a sickeningly cheap these days (sickening when you consider how much money you spent on flash memory in the past).

What sells the AMP 128 specifically, though? I dunno, really - the feature set on these things is almost exactly the same these days - but it does have that inverted-color display, which I saw in person a few weeks back, and is actually pretty cool.

samsungst-5.jpg imageGood morning, friends. I had a great time in Virginia this weekend, although as is typical at a LAN I played videogames for about 2 hours and drank for about 8 each day (not that this is necessarily in error). That being said, I'm glad to be back, so I can talk about things like this update to the Samsung YP-T5 "World's Smallest" YP-T5 flash player, the YP-ST5. Although the form factor is pretty much the same, the battery life has been bumped from 8 hours of playback to 20, USB 2.0 support is in, and an updated firmware (around August or so) will add OGG Vorbis support.

Also, reheated fried calamari has the delicate taste and texture of a cockring. Take the necessary flavor precautions.

mp3-car1.jpg imageSo this 'MP3-Car' is sort of interesting, if cheap looking. It looks like the idea is that you plug any USB flash drive into the FM transmitter base, which then presumably just reads file with an .mp3 extension off the drive an plays it. It has a line out, as well, that deactivates the FM broadcasting when in use. Problem is, the Anyware.com site that has the picture doesn't have a price or a 'buy now' link, and if the Altech MP3-WM32 or MP3-RF38 are the same units, the price is listed as $118. Without an integrated LCD screen at least, I'm thinking $40 is more like it.

Besides being sort of ugly, which is probably not a bullet-point feature, the Muzio supports USB Host functionality, SRS (some sort of surround sound magic?), OGG Vorbis support, FM radio, aluminum body, and recharging via USB. Plus, it has a two-color OLED screen, which probably isn't too much to get worked up over, but there you have it. mpio_fl300.jpg imageMPIO is releasing a pendant-style MP3 player, the FL300, a flash memory player that seemingly takes its visual cues from the iRiver N10. Although some might argue it's not as good looking as the N10, either, I have to admit a certain affinity for their ad copy on the website, which documents the "FL300 Story" in a sort of cartoony sketch style. It also looks like the headphones attach by the minijack at the top. That doesn't seem like a very good idea.

Well, it looks like Korea's UnisonTech has the same idea, as their TMS600 [pictured] and TM500 flash players are anything but ordinary looking, with an floopy flip out screen on the TMS600 and a shape reminiscent of a ninja star or caltrop in the tri-tipped TM500. WiMax From WalMart?

WiMax From WalMart? 08/10/2004 03:53 AM
Over at the Institute for the Future, they're wondering if WalMart might end up getting into the broadband business by hooking up WiMax base stations (once such equipment is actually available) on all their stores, covering much of the US in broadband. It's an interesting theory, and gets the attention of those who think that telecoms are a dying breed. Of course, it's really not that easy. Over at TheFeature, I've written up a longer piece looking at some of the challenges a company like WalMart might face in offering broadband services. However, it's certainly not impossible to count them out. After all, who thought Starbucks would be in the internet access business in the first place? If you take that to a larger scale, perhaps Walmart could get into the WiMax business as well. A more interesting question, however, may be how the world is going to look when there are plenty of "virtual" network operators, where one company offers up their brand for others to put on a network. Virgin has built up quite a set of businesses doing this, and in the mobile space, MVNOs are a hot topic. However, could companies do this for just about any kind of telecom/broadband offering... and more to the point, is there a real benefit in doing so? It's cool for a big brand name company to think they can suddenly get into a technology services business just by licensing out their brand name, but won't there be some risks (a la AT&T' s annoyance with AT&T Wireless' trampling of the brand) and some questions about just why you want to buy your internet service from Coca-Cola?

The Walmart Laptop

The Walmart Laptop 08/17/2004 09:00 PM

Just in time for back-to-school shopping, Walmart puts out an ultra-cheap laptop for under $600. It's an ECS A535, and comes with an Athlon 1.6GHz processor, 14" screen, wireless networking, and XP Home Edition.

As expected, Walmart continues its push of cheap imports with little regard for anything but its own bottom line.

I guess it's good for the US economy in one respect; cheap hardware like this will undoubtedly keep support guys plenty busy. And at that price you might as well buy two; one for a backup or for spare parts.

iPod Mini at Walmart

iPod Mini at Walmart 02/05/2005 09:16 PM

Oh great. Walmart is selling iPods.

Just think... Now you can — in one easy stop — get your oil changed, pick up groceries, the latest DVD release, a low-cost Lindows laptop, a fresh pack of underwear, a 100lb bag of dog food, a Schwinn Stingray bike for your kid's birthday, and buy an iPod. And oh so much more.

Good Lord Almighty, what's next? Mac Mini's at BestBuy? Oh wait; that's already happened!

Actually, I think getting Apple products into more non-Apple stores will do wonders to broaden the user base and help people better understand the Mac. What I don't get is Walmart selling iPods — which are portable little iTunes Music Service billboards — when they have their own online music service. And given all the reasons to hate Walmart, why would Apple want to deal with them in the first place?

WalMart tried to confiscate journo's
camera
01/06/2005 04:49 AM
Cory Doctorow: A naked man streaked a Wal-Mart in Maryland, and a freelance news photographer snapped some pics. Wal-Mart sent out a goon who demanded that he turn over his camera and not take or publish photos of Wal-Mart without permission.
"He said if I didn't turn the camera over to him, he would have me arrested" and ban him from the store, Roy said.

Attorney Mary R. Craig, who represents The Herald-Mail, said Roy "certainly was well within his rights" to take pictures.

The store can set limits, such as on taking pictures inside, but the expectation of privacy probably is less outside, she said.

She said Roy probably didn't violate anyone's privacy, especially the naked man's.

Alice Neff Lucan, an attorney who represents the Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association, said Wal-Mart "emphatically" had no right to demand Roy's camera.

"He didn't violate any of Wal-Mart's rights and he didn't violate the streaker's rights," she said. "He just took a picture of what was in the public's view."
