Solution Guide for Migrating High

from UNIX to Windows

Solution Guide for Migrating High
Performance Computing (HPC) Applications
from UNIX to Windows
01/03/2004 05:59 AM
This guide is designed to provide process and technical guidance to help you migrate your existing HPC applications from UNIX to Microsoft® Windows®, as well as set up the required HPC infrastructure (including hardware, network connectivity, and software tools) to run those applications on Windows. It will help you choose the optimal HPC system architecture for your business, and once you have made that choice, it provides detailed guidance for you to plan, migrate, deploy, and operate your HPC system. The guide can also be used to create a Windows-based HPC application and HPC infrastructure from scratch, without migrating from a UNIX environment, although this use is not its primary purpose. This guide discusses the planning and implementation of four types of HPC systems on Windows. These are symmetric multiprocessing (SMP), massively parallel multiprocessing (MPP), a network of workstations (NOW), and Web service-load balanced systems (WS-LB).

Working Hard, Hardly Working

Working Hard, Hardly Working 06/15/2004 10:07 AM
Three years ago, I was working at a small company as the unofficial IT director / all-purpose computer bitch. I was laid off in early 2003, but to this day, the job presents me with difficulties; namely, that of telling prospective employers what I did, and for that matter, what the company itself did. I have virtually no idea what this company's function was, despite working there for over a year and a half, although I did learn how to spew an amazing amount of marketing jargon without thinking. As for my role there, it was essentially vast tracts of doing absolutely nothing, punctuated erratically by moments of panicking and crisis-defusion, usually involving something truly earth-shattering like the CEO not being able to print her email. When asked by interviewers "What did your company do?" I am forced to mumble vaguaries about consulting and hope they leave the issue alone.

Europe primed for HDTV

Europe primed for HDTV 09/14/2004 07:32 AM
High-definition television (HDTV) technology is being prepped for deployment across Europe in the coming years. TV Execs at the International Broadcasting Convention discussed the issue and believe that Europe is ready for the new technology. HDTV is already in use in 5 major countries (Japan, US, Canada, Australia, South Korea). HDTV enabled TV's have higher image quality, yet require shows to be filmed on special cameras. Currently, America leads the world with 40 HDTV enabled channels.

Ghislain Lescuyer of Thomson told the BBC that "we really think that 2004/2005 will be the year of high definition".

Current estimates suggest that as many as 4.5m households in Europe could be using HDTV enabled devices by 2008. In the UK, the BBC will be outputting all of it's content in HDTV form by 2010. Although many broadcasters are keen to switch over sooner, the technology can't be launched in many areas until existing analogue signals are switched off / switched onto digital.
