Stinky links
02/05/2005 09:50 PMA few friends started posting all their daily links to their blog
like I've been doing for the past few months, and when I see their
sites pop up into my blo.gs sidebar or my bloglines account, I get all
excited that they wrote something, but then there's a bit of a let
down when I realize it's another set of 4-5 links.
Then I looked at my own site, filled with ten posts of 3-4 dumb
links and sighed. After five years of doing this, I never thought I'd
be reduced to handfuls of interesting links sprinkled with a dab of
jokey commentary. Maybe that's what killed Anil's site.
Stinky ROV from Phoenix Takes on MIT
Stinky ROV from Phoenix Takes on MIT
03/29/2005 02:59 PMThere's an entertaining new Wired
article about a team of four
Mexican immigrants from a Phoenix High School taking on MIT and other
top schools in the
recent MATE ROV
contest. Their ROV, named Stinky,
was hacked together from PVC pipe and other off-the-shelf parts. Their
unconventional design combined with some last minute help from
feminine
hygiene products resulted in a favorable showing compared to
robots entered by
leading Universities. Stinky ended up with the design award and the
team
received a special achievement award in addition to being declared the
overall winner of the competition. Their
story inspired the Phoenix Union High School District to create the La
Vida
Robot scholarship fund to benefit the further education of the four
team members: Cristian Arcega, Lorenzo Santillan, Luis Aranda, and
Oscar
Vazquez. More photos
are available on the team's website, as
is a technical
report (PDF format) describing their ROV.

a blanket of wet cow poop.

I was going to blog from Reeperbahn (I find it slightly worrying that
T9 actually recognizes that word) but instead exhaustion got the
better of me, so I'm in the hotel, ready for bed.
But idly I wonder about why my name seems so feminine to many
non-Finns. The hotel tv greets me as "Mrs Jalkanen", and
someone has placed a women's magazine on the table for my convenient
perusal.
Well, no big harm done :). If some computer out there thinks I'm a
woman, let it be. Computers need their fun, too.
Update: I need to check my handwriting. The hotel bill this
morning was addressed to
- Mrs. Janne Jalkanen

NOT quite where I imagine living. And the poor clerk looked very
confused as she looked me in the eye and went: "M...errr
Jalkanen?", as she was trying to decide which one was correct:
the computer or her eyes. :-D

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has certainly come a long way in recent

AI, advancements like the ALICE project are certainly bringing us a
few steps closer….

For Chapter 15 of
Blogs,
Wikis, and Feeds In Action I'm combining my
Relay-IRC Chatengine, the
JSPWiki rendering engine, and the
BlogClient
library together to create a wiki blogging chatbot, but why? Why
would anybody want to use wiki syntax (or any other syntax) to blog
from an IRC chatroom? Are chatbots just pure geek-fun or is there an
actual business case for them? Anybody using chatbots, or more
specifically blog-chatbots for in a business application?

Above we see the blogbot entering a chatroom. Snoopdavey greets the
bot and the bot, being quite professional and not sassy in the least,
responds with "Unknown command." Next, snoopdavey instructs the bot to
post a blog message titled "Hello World" with some content in JSPWiki
format. Blogbot converts the content to HTML, posts it to a blog
server, and responds with the new post ID. Next, snoopdavey decides to
unblog the message he just blogged and the bot complies.
Pretty cool and all, but probably useful only to the terminally
geeky.
