M2K (Music-to-Knowledge) Toolkit 03/30/2005 11:26 AM

M2K (Music-to-Knowledge)Toolkit
http://www.music-ir.org /evaluation/m2k/

The International Music Information Retrieval Systems Evaluation Laboratory (IMIRSEL) at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS), University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), is proud to announce the official release of its M2K (Music-to-Knowledge) Alpha 1.0 toolkit. M2K is an open-sourced Java-based framework designed to allow Music Information Retrieval (MIR) and Music Digital Library (MDL) researchers to rapidly prototype, share and scientifically evaluate their sophisticated MIR and MDL techniques. M2K builds upon and extends the D2K/T2K datamining framework developed by the Automated Learning Group (ALG) at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA). M2K Alpha 1.0 downloads, installation requirements & instructions, and a wide range of documentation, can be found at the above URL. 2K Alpha 1.0 is currently the strongest in audio-based approaches to MIR/MDL tasks. They would like to encourage all MIR/MDL researchers with interests in symbol-based and metadata-based techniques to join in and help them extend the functionality of M2K. This has been added to Knowledge Discovery Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

thing My friend Alex at University of California Press gave me a review copy of the book Thing Knowledge: A Philosophy of Scientific Instruments by Davis Baird. Sounds heavy, but on first glance it seems that Baird has balanced deep philosophy with fun machine history! The illustrations and vintage photographs are a treat too. I'm looking forward to digging into it. From Peter Galison's blurb on the back:
"Grappling with a wonderful assortment of objects--from antique orreries to modern spectrographs--Davis Baird draws the reader deep into fascinating questions about the nature of knowledge. As lucid on the semantic account of theories as it is on the inner workings of the cyclotron, this book that brings the laboratory to philosophers and philosophy into the laboratory."
Warning: At $65, it's a pricey book, probably due to a limited print run. Link

Collaborative knowledge gardening

Collaborative knowledge gardening 08/30/2004 06:43 AM
Next month I'll be giving a talk on social software to an audience of CTOs. To prime the pump, I've been spending some time with two of the newer services in the space: Flickr and del.icio.us. Neither focuses primarily on the six-degrees-of-separation dynamic that drives LinkedIn, Orkut, Friendster, and Spoke. Flickr, as I would explain it to my friends and family, is a way to easily upload and share digital photos. And del.icio.us does the same thing for Web bookmarks.

To CTOs, though, I'd say that both are collaborative systems for building a shared database of items, developing a metadata vocabulary about the items, performing metadata-driven queries, and monitoring change in areas of interest. [Full story at InfoWorld.com]
While I was on vacation, this column percolated through the infosphere. Now that I'm back, I'm seeing some interesting ripple effects. It had already been apparent that in addition to monitoring the blog conversations swirling around a column, it would be interesting to monitor the del.icio.us traffic too. Not surprisingly, those two views have now begun to merge. ...

Matching newlines in JavaScript

Matching newlines in JavaScript 09/20/2004 04:59 PM

Just a quick note: the . character in a JavaScript regular expression will never match a newline character. If you want to match any character including newlines you can use the [\s\S] character class instead, which means "any character that's either whitespace or not whitespace".

This differs from both Python and Perl, where regular expression flags can be used to alter the behaviour of the . character (re.DOTALL and /s respectively).

This tip courtesy of the denizens of #javascript on Freenode.

Matching Book Purchases with Blogs 04/20/2004 11:17 AM

Amazon should run reverse affiliate links. When you search for or look ar a book on Amazon, they should have a little box that says "If you like this book, you might like these blogs..."

Better yet, let people upload their OPML file to their Amazon profile. Then they could have a box that said, "People who bought this book are most likely to be subscribed to these RSS feeds..."

Got this idea while perusing the Share Your OPML app over at scripting.com.

Mixing and matching on one's public page

Mixing and matching on one's public page 06/06/2005 12:13 AM

Though the stylesheet is still rather conservative, and the range of external modules still limited; take a look at my public page on Tribe.net (below.) Imagine this was your "About Me" page.

Notice that we're meshing in de.licio.us and RSS feeds, giving our end-users the ability to put up more than one 'desktop image' up into their interface and combining internal and external blogs.

We're also displaying different combinations of friends and groups - and in general - fulfilling the 'customization' requirement of DLAs.

This is what we all need - every DLA, portal, social network and blogging tool around. The ultimate "About Me" page. Now that Tribe has set the new standard, all other systems will be compared to this.

Tribecomposite.jpg

I especially like this approach as it allows one to add in additional modules - without fundamentally changing the UI.

Sure it looks allot like MyYahoo, and it could use three columns, and sure we'd like sexier stylesheets and Tribe still needs a better header - but that all will come with time. It's the ease of use and power quotient that I'm excited about right now.

It's taken years - but the Tribe team: Paul Martino, Brian Lawler, Chris Vale, Elliot Loh (among otehrs) - and the product marketing dudes - Chris Law and Gary Chao - have finally figured it out.

It's called product iteration - and it's what we did with VideoWorlks - for five years till we got Director - just right.

Hoping to cash in on the iPod mini craze (and you know, I've heard more stupid ideas before), Kyocera is selling five new color-matched versions of the four-megapixel Finecam SL400R cameras. Color-matched, that is, to the iPod mini. And while I'm sure they'll be super hot (at least to those fashion-forward iPod adopters), getting one into the States may not be so easy -- the cameras will only be available in Apple's Ginza store and the online Apple Store (but for Japan-shipping only? Unknown!) (Thanks, Jon!)
