Working with a Metaschema 10/02/2002 06:06 PM

W3C XML Schema isn't just for validation -- in this article Will Provost demonstrates how adaptations of the schema for schemas can be used to drive applications.

Working Hard, Hardly Working

Working Hard, Hardly Working 06/15/2004 10:07 AM
Three years ago, I was working at a small company as the unofficial IT director / all-purpose computer bitch. I was laid off in early 2003, but to this day, the job presents me with difficulties; namely, that of telling prospective employers what I did, and for that matter, what the company itself did. I have virtually no idea what this company's function was, despite working there for over a year and a half, although I did learn how to spew an amazing amount of marketing jargon without thinking. As for my role there, it was essentially vast tracts of doing absolutely nothing, punctuated erratically by moments of panicking and crisis-defusion, usually involving something truly earth-shattering like the CEO not being able to print her email. When asked by interviewers "What did your company do?" I am forced to mumble vaguaries about consulting and hope they leave the issue alone.

Working together

Working together 05/23/2004 03:19 PM

Along the lines of my last entry.... Brent Simmons' and Adriaan Tijsseling's children shared a playground for some time, now, and today their parents taught them how to play well together. ecto's new 1.1.5 version allows users to add new feeds to NetNewsWire, while NetNewsWire in its 2.0 incarnation can be told to use ecto as the default weblog editor instead of the builtin one.

Thanks, Ado and Brent. [a preponderance of evidence - What Willis Wuz' Talkin' 'Bout]

Right on to Adriaan and Brent!

We need more cooperation liek this in our industry!

Tip for working around the security bug

Tip for working around the security bug 05/19/2004 05:48 PM
I got a tip I’ll pass along on dealing with the OS X security bug.

If you change the protocol helper for "help" URLs, then the script should not run. I downloaded the More Internet Preference Pane and changed the handler for "help" to the Finder.

It turns out that the bug is more widespread than WebKit—even non-WebKit browsers such as Camino may be vulnerable.

(Thanks to Rob McNair-Huff of Mac Net Journal for the tip.)

Still kicking, but not working

Still kicking, but not working 04/09/2004 04:03 PM

Sorry it's been so long since my last post, but I've been working hard at not working. For those that would like an update on my injury, a recent MRI shows that I have a herniated cervical disk which is pressing on a nerve root (English translation: it freaking hurts!). Early next week I visit a specialist who will either provide a steroid injection or, depending on the severity of the problem, recommend surgery.

In the past I've always loved the fact that I'm a "one man company," but I'm now seeing the obvious downside - there's no one to take up the slack when something like this happens. Typing for any length of time is next to impossible, so my inbox continues to overflow with email that would be easy for someone else to answer. Once I'm back to work again, I may look into hiring someone to help out.

As an aside, I'm bummed that this injury is preventing me from running the half marathon I've been training for since December. The last time I attempted a marathon I got sidelined by a running injury, so to be stopped this time by something completely unrelated to running is maddening. Maybe next year :)

Feverishly working

Feverishly working 03/22/2005 04:23 PM

Sadly, I've been quite absent from my writing lately. I've been stuck in monotony at work lately and then busy as a bee at home so the things I want to do get done in smaller and smaller blocks of time. I managed to get a "final" theme for Mac Geekery going such that I'm actually happy with it. I have some ideas for what to do with the site now and I'm writing a lot of articles that I will publish soon to that end.

One thing I do know about setting up Drupal, now, is that the default install that uses one large .htaccess file for everything is the slowest possible solution. I imported all those statements into a Directory statement for the virtual host and site performance at CP and MG went up over 500%. I was amazed.

If you're running a site that depends on an .htaccess file, don't. Import the directives into a configuration file and tell Apache to ignore the .htaccess file (or, better yet, remove it). You'll see a huge increase in performance.

Notae is progressing well, but due to a lack of free time development on it is stunted. It's seeing a very slow launch time due to some font fun which I have a solution in mind for but just haven't gotten the time to implement it. When that's done I might start a beta round. Don't volunteer now, I'll ask when the time comes.

Working At The Club

Working At The Club 06/14/2004 05:11 AM
With more and more people telecommuting or "freelancing," the home office has been getting a lot more attention. Still, not everyone likes to work from home (and for some people, it's really difficult). There are tons of "temporary office space" companies that buy up buildings and let people rent out single offices. However, one company is trying to go (just slightly) beyond that by setting up a "work club", where you pay your membership dues and get to hang out in the common areas and meet your co-workers. You also can use meeting rooms, phone booths, and some limited amount of personal office space. Honestly, though, this doesn't seem all that different from most temporary or executive office space operations - other than they seem to be trying to make it sound cooler with trendy phrases to describe everything. For example, meeting rooms are "team spaces" while the cubicle farm is a "touchdown space." Right.

Wi-Fi Means: Never Having to Say "I'm

Wi-Fi Means: Never Having to Say "I'm
Not Working"
01/16/2004 11:01 AM
The New York Times offers this cheery piece that suggests you can still ignore your kids while in the same room [reg. required]: I'm sounding cynical, but this article does extol the virtues of being able to be connected all of the time and work all of the time, even when in physical proximity to your family. Seriously, however, the notion that you can get necessary work done and not have to hole yourself up in a basement or at a specific location is one of the great benefits of a home wireless network. Oddly, the piece opens looking at Oren Michels, identifying him as the president of a human resources benefits administration firm. I knew that name, so I perform a Google search, and find that he is also president and CEO of WiFinder, a Wi-Fi directory site. (Disclosure: I'm the senior editor at JiWire, an editorial and directory site focused on wireless that competes for ad/sponsor dollars with WiFinder.) I shot a note to Oren to confirm that he was still in that role at WiFinder, which he is. Like WiFinder's chairman and founder Scott Rafer, Oren wears a few hats. My point here is not that it's odd that Oren has multiple jobs, but rather it's an odd choice of the reporter to not mention that Oren Michels is the head of a company that's devoted to spreading information about Wi-Fi. It's not bias; it's just a strange omission, n'est c'est pas?...

Companies use Bricks to deliver coupons on their Web sites and ad banners as well as in their marketing e-mails, but the mechanism they use to approve coupon designs previously only worked in Windows. Now they can sign off on coupons in Safari, and consumers can use the Web browser to print coupons from such sites as Cottonelle.com and boxtopsforeducation.com (General Mills). The coupons are typically redeemed in retail stores.

Couple Busted In Online Coupon Scam

Couple Busted In Online Coupon Scam 04/15/2004 02:23 PM
Fake online coupons are nothing new, but this short AP article about a couple being arrested for selling thousands of dollars worth of fake online coupons has me a bit confused. The woman says she stopped as soon as she found out it was illegal - which raises a bunch of other questions not answered by the article. Was she creating the coupons herself? If so, then she must have known it was illegal. If not, where were they coming from? The article does mention that her husband was charged with "forgery, fraud, theft and other crimes," so it's possible that he was creating the fake coupons and giving them to her to sell. Still, you might think she would have asked where they came from. Of course, I also wonder who buys coupons? I always thought coupons were the things you got for free with the Sunday paper.
