“Our entire information society rests on a fragile foundation that mathematicians are racing to dismantle. It’s not often that results from conferences on mathematics make the news, but that’s precisely what happened last month at the annual Crypto conference in Santa Barbara, CA when researchers from France, Israel, and China all showed that they had discovered flaws in a widely used algorithm called MD5—an algorithm that I wrote about in some detail last month. The…

Google IPO: the Prospectus. Of particular interest in this 119-page (not including appendices) monster document are the Risk Factors (there are lots) and the Lett er from the Founders, an "owner's manual" for Google shareholders: "Google is not a conventional company. We do not intend to become one... If opportunities arise that might cause us to sacrifice short term results but are in the best long term interest of our shareholders, we will take those opportunities... We aspire to make Google an institution that makes the world a better place". Of course, if hardcore financial stuff is your bag, there's plenty of that, too.

Movable Type comes, by default, with a program mt-send-entry.cgi that's supposed to allow pretty much anyone to send a blog entry to pretty much anyone else. Except, interestingly, it allows anyone to send anything to just about anyone else. 100 reasons abstinence is doomed 01/25/2004 04:09 AM

6. Play hide-and-seek in a cornfield... (if a body meet a body comin' through the rye)
9. Pray together. (Jesus Jesus Jesus, don't stop)
10. Do a crossword puzzle... (What's a four-letter word for -- oh, nevermind)
21. Watch your favorite Disney movie... (Dude, this is totally one of my major turn-ons)
34. Color eggs -- even if it isn't Easter... (yes, that's right, encourage them to fetishize the reproductive cells of chickens)
100. Wash your parent's cars. (Ohhhhh, soapy t-shirts)

Unlinkable NYT doomed to
google-obscurity
07/14/2004 03:38 PM
The NYT's registration system and expiring pages have doomed them to google-obscurity. Wired News argues that they've gone from being the paper of record to a Web-era irrelevancy, and all to protect a Lexis-Nexis agreement and to bring in two to three percent of the digital division's profits.
But recently, when I googled the terms "Iraq torture prison Abu Ghraib" -- certainly one of the most intensively covered news stories of the year -- the first New York Times article was the 295th search result, trailing the New Yorker, Guardian, ABC and CBS News, New York Post, MSNBC, Slate, CNN, Sydney Morning Herald, Denver Post, USA Today, Bill O'Reilly on FoxNews and a host of others news sites.

Doomed to failure in the Middle East 04/27/2004 06:13 AM
D oomed to failure in the Middle East. 52 former senior British diplomats, probably the most experienced people on Middle East issues in Britain, sent a letter to Tony Blair, telling him he is very close to fucking up big time. Why UN's information society summit is
doomed to fail
02/17/2004 08:43 AM
The United Nations World Summit on Information Society (WSIS) has been doomed to failure from the start. That may seem odd, given both the abundance of free and open source software and the apparent interest by the UN in making such tools available to the impoverished -- a combination that seems a no-brainer. But in spite of the alignment of resource, need, and interest, the WSIS plan will fail. Here's why.

VW Concept R 03/14/2005 06:18 PM
Wrrooom, wrrrom. A couple of years ago Volkswagen showed their Concept R (higher resolution pictures) at an autoshow. VW Vortex says that they are going to build it. And that it's going to be cheap. They are talking about competing with the Mazda Miata. The Porsche 911 got nice round headlights again instead of the oval blobs and is just amazingly beautiful. I like the look of the VW until I see a picture of the 911. I can't...
