Australian Government Gets Into The
Online Divorce Business
07/27/2004 12:38 PMWe've noted that there are a
growing
number of online services to help you with your divorce (including
one to set up a
divorce
registry after the ex-spouse takes everything you own), but these
are all run by private organizations. The Australian government,
however, is getting into the business themselves by
offering the necessary forms online,
which still need to be submitted by hard copy (though, it does suggest
at some point people will be able to submit them electronically). As
you might expect, this has some politicians up in arms, including one
who calls the offering "bloody cuckoo." He should calm down. It's
not like they're allowing
divorce
by mobile phone or anything.

titles and the robots exclusion, I would tend to assume the latter.

Government Abstinence Web Site Draws Ire
(AP)
03/31/2005 05:45 PMAP - How should you talk to your children about sex? A new government
Web site gives parents advice on how to persuade their youngsters to
avoid sex, that "abstinence is the healthiest choice." That's
dictating values, say organizations ranging from the American Civil
Liberties Union to gay rights groups, and they want the site taken
down.

Well, he doesn't have to wait any longer. In the last few months I've

Government Launches Comparison Shopping
Site For Drugs
04/30/2004 02:05 AMThe government has launched what is basically a
comparison shopping
engine for prescription drugs. Drug buyers can go to the site,
put in the drugs they have prescriptions for along with their zipcode
and find out what local pharmacies are charging. While, officially,
the site is designed for Medicare recipients to help them determine
what sort of "discount card" they should get, people have quickly
noticed that the "discount card" is something of a misnomer. The
prices you get with the discount card are pretty damn similar to what
you get without it. Still, by making prescription drug buyers more
informed, the government is hoping to push drug prices down. Of
course, if they really wanted to do that, they'd list Canadian
pharmacy prices as well.

We've caught The Gay too!
We've caught The Gay too!
03/06/2004 01:51 AMPortland has started issuing same-sex marriages today and I
would have gone down there this morning to take some photos but it's
raining cats and dogs outside. Although I'm happy to see some towns
push the issue, I fear it'll give the recent backers of an Oregon
state ammendment to ban gay marriages the extra push they need to get
it on the ballot. That said, Oregon has yet to pass anything overtly
anti-homosexual, so I doubt it passes. It's funny to hear the Oregon
republican say this move is "an insult to the voters and to the
people" when Oregon is one of only 10 states *without* any law banning
same-sex marriage on the books. If it was really an insult, you'd
think maybe a measure would have passed in the past two decades,
no?

As the Mac turns 20, has the PC caught
up?
01/22/2004 10:19 AMTwenty years ago this week, during the year of Big Brother, Steve Jobs
and Steve Wozniak introduced the Apple Macintosh. Although the seminal
advert sticks in everyone's minds, it's easy to forget just how
revolutionary that little beige, boxy, Mac was. At the time, Windows
version 1 was still a year away, and overlapping windows and icons on
the PC would not appear for another three years, in the form of
Windows 2--later to be renamed Windows 286. And of course all those
early versions of Windows ran on top of the DOS command-line operating
system.

Would You Get Caught? Go Phish!
Would You Get Caught? Go Phish!
04/12/2005 06:10 AMA week ago,
MailFrontier launched an online phishing IQ test
to see just how many users would get caught out by e-mails they
received. The results of the first week make scary reading. So far,
nearly 12,000 people have tried the test - and 92% of them got at
least one wrong answer.
In a similar US version, taken by more than 300,000 people, the
average score was under 70%, The average UK user got seven out of ten
- just 7% got them all right. In America, 96% got at least one answer
wrong.
A MailFrontier spokesman said: "The 10 test emails are all
real-life examples caught by our users. This means that, had they
appeared in people's email systems in real life, a significant number
would not be able to tell a real email from a fraudulent one."
