12/02/2003 03:09 AM Kenneth Michael Trentadue was found dead in his cell in 1995,
and ruled a suicide despite sloppy handling of evidence and other
eyebrow-raisers.
DOJ's
Civil Rights
Division punted in 1997, and it was again ruled
suicide in 1999
by their
Office of the Inspector
General. Last week,
an AP story said the DOJ's
Public Integrity
Section would be taking the matter up yet again. While there are
plenty of fringe sources in a
google
search on his full name, there seems to be enough in the
mainstream to support the notion that something doesn't add up.

05/19/2004 08:49 AMReports today provide more detail on Cometa Networks' shutdown: In
news broken here yesterday, Cometa Networks will cease operations.
Several publications provide more insight into what happened and what
will happen to existing venues. Richard Shim of News.com offers good
analysis that scale and resale are the only ways in which hotspot
networks can spread out expense and have enough usage. One analyst
notes what is becoming a refrain: Wi-Fi service has to be an add-on
package for existing offerings, not a standalone subscription. Seattle
reporter John Cook of The Post-Intelligencer talks to Cometa's venue
and reseller partners, who were taken by surprise and are sorting
through how to proceed....
The inevitable demise of meetup.com
The inevitable demise of meetup.com
04/14/2005 07:31 PMIn the beginning was a great idea: let’s create a Web site that
makes it easy for people with similar interests to find each other and
coordinate face-to-face meetings. And so Meetup.com was born, and
grew, and grew. Along the way it became part of the massive, amorphous
“social networking” set of companies (which includes
LinkedIn, Orkut, Ryze and most famously Friendster. All of these
companies now face the same challenge that hit thousands of…

Longhorn's Demise Gives Linux Its Chance
Longhorn's Demise Gives Linux Its Chance
09/03/2004 08:23 AMLonghorn's delay may be Linux's gain, according to Linux vendors and
analysts. With Longhorn shorn of most of its most important features,
such as WinFS (Windows File System), Linux supporters are hopeful that
the Linux desktop can finally make inroads into the hearts and minds
of corporate desktop users.
Dr. Frederick Berenstein, chairman and CTO of Xandros Inc., thinks
Linux can do more than just catch up with Windows. He thinks Linux can
do better.
"It is understandable, given the complexity of Microsoft's vision
of the new [WinFS] system that they chose to remove it from Longhorn
until it is fully functional. The Linux community is aware of the
direction Microsoft is taking and is planning to bring comparable
pervasive search capabilities to the Linux desktop," said
Berenstein.
Specifically, Berenstein noted, "It was just announced at the KDE
[K Desktop Environment] Community World Summit that the next release
of KDE upon which the Xandros GUI is based, may incorporate a
Google-type facility on the control panel to search local content.
Considering the Longhorn delays, there's a good chance that Xandros
will beat Microsoft to the punch."

I love garlic but I love miniture garlic more. What is
miniture garlic?
I am not sure if they are really garlic but they are spicy and has
that piercing and
lingering taste similar to garlic. In Korea, they are called
Dal-lae.
They are sold at Korean markets but only for short period of time
late spring/early
summer. They are hard to prepare too. What you see
above took my wife
an hour.
Best way to eat them is raw with a touch of dressing made with soy
sauce, vinegar,
red pepper, sugar, and sesame oil. Very very delicious if you
like spicy food.
Only downside is that, as with garlic, breathing out calls for
courage.

VOIP: Be Very Afraid
VOIP: Be Very Afraid
05/05/2004 09:37 AMHere's what Michael Powell
had to say about voice over IP to the main cable industry trade
show:
"If you're a big incumbent and you've
sort of enjoyed a competitive advantage . . . you, in my opinion,
ought
to be terrified."
"I think it's
going to be the very, very best and biggest breakthrough in our
ambitions and dreams about competition ever."
You tell 'em, Mike! Seriously, Powell is dead-on here.
He understands what VOIP represents, and the significance of the
regulatory issues it raises for the FCC. As do the key FCC
staffers, who I talk with periodically.
However, I've been disappointed that Powell's FCC has so far taken
a
nibbling, incremental approach to VOIP. They are still putting
off the hard issues, while addressing what look like easy cases.
In reality, those cases (like the AT&T petition the FCC recently
denied) aren't so easy. And the FCC's tentative, limited
decisions will still be taken as definitive by those in the
marketplace. I'm convinced the FCC is committed to addressing
the
fundamental VOIP policy issues squarely, but that commitment needs to
translate into action.
A good indicator will be how quickly the FCC moves forward, either
through formal decisionmaking or public activities, after the comment
cycle on its major voice over IP proceeding closes at the end of
June.

Claim of P2P's demise highly overstated,

06/22/2005 01:49 AMCory Doctorow:
Entertainment Media Research's bogus study on music downloading
concluded that "35% of music listeners are using legal download
services, and that the percentage will soon surpass illegal downloads,
currently at 40%." A Slashdot reader trashes the bad statistical
comparisons here, with remarkable acuity:
This is a classic example of bogus statistics. The two figures have
absolutely nothing to do with each other. The 30% of people using
legal downloads might be mutually exclusive or totally overlapping
with the 40% that use illegal downloads. The numbers need not total to
100% (and could total to more than 100%). At best we can conclude:
1. No greater than 70% of music listeners download music (legal or
illegal) -- i.e., as much as 30% of music listeners simply don't
download music.
2. No fewer than 40% of music listeners download music (legal or
illegal).
3. At most, 30% use both legal and illegal downloads.
4. It's possible (based on this limited data) that no one does both
illegal and legal downloading.
In next month's survey, both numbers could go up or down since the
survey does not ask "do you ONLY download music from legal/ illegal
sources." Moreover, the survey provides no estimates of volumes --
illegal downloaders could be downloading 10X or 10X less than their
legal-downloading counterparts. Or people that download legal music
could be the biggest "pirates" and this survey would be none the
wiser.
