harrassment," they said, and since Texas is an at-will employment

Defcon Wi-Fi Shootout: Sniper Sights and
55 Miles
08/04/2004 11:19 AMDefcon, the hacker conference in Las Vegas held each year, established
what might be a world record in Wi-Fi links: 55.1 miles: I wouldn't
want to be standing between (or near) the two points, but it's a great
achievement in the best hacker tradition. The winners of the second
annual Defcon contest were teenagers--even better! I didn't realize
the Guinness Book folks were monitoring these kinds of records; they
say the world distance record is 192 miles, but it required a Swedish
weather balloon. (Or a weather balloon in Sweden, to sound less
kinky.) Let's not forget the Snipe Yagi, a Yagi antenna mounted inside
what looks like a rifle with sniper sights....

HOWTO build a Bluetooth "sniper rifle"
HOWTO build a Bluetooth "sniper rifle"
03/14/2005 05:29 PMCory Doctorow:
One of the security assumptions in Bluetooth is that attackers need to
be quite close-by if they want to gain access to your phone or other
device. Here's simple instructions for building a handsome, effective
Bluetooth "sniper rifle" whose high-gain antenna will give you access
to devices from miles away.
After a few seconds, John pointed the gun at the Library Tower / US
Bank Building, which is the tallest building in Los Angeles. The
building was .75 miles (a little over 1 km) from our position.
As more Bluetooth devices started appearing, John said, "This building
is full of Bluetooth! Look we got some Blackberries!" He also
explained that, with multiple guns, it would be possible to track a
single Bluetooth device as the person walked around. In less than a
few minutes, twenty devices were detected—all at distances over a
half mile away! We decided to quickly conclude the scan, given police
activity in the area earlier in the day from a bomb scare.

Barret's XM109: No-Hassle 25mm Sniper
Rifle
08/18/2004 08:38 AM
Barrett's prototype XM109 packs no-fuss, some-muss light armor
penetration into a convenient point-and-shoot form factor that makes
lofting 25mm sniper rounds downrange a relative walk in the park for
today's workaday infantryman. Going into testing this month, the XM109
uses the computerized sighting-system "BORS" (Barrett Optical Ranging
Sighting System) to automatically compensates for changes in air
pressure, temperature, and the angle of the weapon towards the target,
"taking all the sweat-math work out of first-round shots." Dial in the
distance and take your shot - that armored vehicle should go down in
the first round.
The XM109 can hold up to five of the 25mm rounds - derived from the
dual-purpose (metal and meat) rounds used in the AH-64 Apache
helicopter - and can penetrate up to 50 millimeters of armored
plating, such as the stuff that protects many of aging SCUD missile
launchers.
If given the green light by the armed forces, expect future
production versions to incorporate a range-finder, night-vision
capability, and sound suppression. (Thanks, Mikegre, you
punk.)

This is probably
phony, but it seems like something that might actually be used: The ID
SNIPER rifle implants "a GPS-microchip in the body of a human being,
using a high powered sniper rifle as the long distance injector. The
microchip will enter the body and stay there, causing no internal
damage, and only a very small amount of physical pain to the target.
It will feel like a mosquito-bite lasting a fraction of a second. At
the same time a digital camcorder with a zoom-lense fitted within the
scope will take a high-resolution picture of the target. This picture
will be stored on a memory card for later image-analysis."

Al-Qaeda tells Madrid: 'We will defeat all the
infidels'
11 March 2005
DUBAI- Al-Qaeda's frontman in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, vowed to
defeat "infidels and apostates" in response to a Madrid conference on
terrorism.
"We tell the infidels and apostates, the enemies of God: whatever
you do, you will be defeated. God promised us victory," read the
statement from the Organization of Al-Qaeda of Jihad in the Land of
Two Rivers, in a statement published on the Internet.
The authenticity of the statement could not be verified.
"How many times will the infidels and apostates meet to fight
against Islam and combat the Jihad... They have other worries than to
fight the Muslims and mistreat them," it said.

Muslims have issued what they say is the world's first fatwa against
Osama bin Laden.
The edict by the Islamic Commission of Spain, which represents
about 70 per cent of the approximately 300 mosques in the country,
called bin Laden an apostate and asks Muslims to denounce him.

Hong Kong's Threatened Speech
06/03/2004 12:13 PMThe Chinese authorities are mocking their promises of "one country,
two systems," a promise they made when they got Hong Kong back from
the British in 1997. As William Woo notes in this opinion piece today, four prominent talk show hots have
gone off the air. Woo writes:
For the social, economic
and political elites of Hong Kong, Albert Cheng's show may not have
been required listening. But for them press freedom is important. One
by one, the canaries in the coal mine are going silent. On this
anniversary of Tiananmen Square, Hong Kong deludes itself if it
imagines that it need not be concerned.
The concern
there is real. I recently had an email from a friend I met while
teaching in Hong Kong each fall for the past five years. He is a proud
citizen of China and Hong Kong, and thought the Beijing government had
meant what it said in the handover. He now fears the worst may occur.
I hope China's rulers won't be that stupid. They have the power to do
this. But they do not have anything like the moral authority. As they
loosen their socialist economic grip on the mainland, they inevitably
will have to allow genuine self-rule to emerge.
Breaking promises but making Hong Kong a non-free city will not help
China, but it could wreck Hong Kong, and show the world that Beijing's
words are as hollow as its critics have said all along. This is a test
for China. Right now, it's failing.
