Windows CE 5.0 to Include Microsoft's
First Operating System Commercial
Derivatives Program for All Licensees
06/28/2004 11:51 AMToday at the Microsoft® Windows® Embedded Developers' Conference
(DevCon) 2004, Microsoft Corp. announced that Windows CE 5.0 will
offer expanded source licensing, enabling, for the first time, all
licensees to ship products commercially built from their modifications
of the Windows CE 5.0 shared source code. Licensees will maintain
ownership of their derivative code and will not be obligated to share
modifications with Microsoft, partners or competitors. In addition to
expanding the Windows CE Shared Source distribution to more than 2.5
million lines of code, Windows CE 5.0 will also include networking
performance improvements that dramatically increase data processing
speeds, more than 60 production-quality drivers that increase
developer productivity, technology to remotely monitor device
performance, and Direct3D® Mobile to enable high-intensity gaming
applications. Windows CE 5.0 -- previously code-named "Macallan"-- is
scheduled to be released to manufacturing July 9, 2004.

Microsoft's desktop PC phone system
12/02/2003 01:23 AMBy now we've all heard about Microsoft's moves into the cellphone
business with their Smartphone operating system, but what hasn't
gotten all that much attention is that they're also going to start
selling Voice over IP telephone systems for businesses that are
integrated into PCs:The Redmond, Washington, software giant is likely
to muscle in on the territory of traditional vendors of private branch
exchanges (PBXs) and even threaten the desktop handset, through
PC-based "soft phones," according to some industry analysts. However,
Microsoft and some major vendors in that market say they don't see
themselves on a collision course. Microsoft may increasingly provide
the platform software for telephony, but more specialized vendors will
write the applications on top, they said.Since it's aimed at
businesses this isn't something that the average person will ever use
(except maybe at work), but it does give us a glimpse of how Voice
over IP is...

A injunction against Microsoft's
upcoming operating system
04/18/2005 12:14 AMAlacritech argues that Microsoft's software violates two of its
patents relating to scalable networking, US Patent No. 6,427,171 and
US Patent No. 6,987,868, both entitled Protocol Processing Stack for
use with Intelligent Network Interface Device.
The injunction claims that in 1997 Alacritech invented network
interface software to speed up data flows across networks. In 1998 it
approached Microsoft to see whether the software giant would be
interested in licensing the technology.
There are fears that the injunction may delay the release of Longhorn
which is scheduled to appear next year.

03/14/2005 04:54 PMI keep reading all these speculative posts about Yahoo getting into
the contextual advertising game, being "poised" to compete with
AdSense, and so on. But what surprises me is how little chatter about
Microsoft I read. If people really think that MSN Search is
Microsoft's only assault on the cash cow in Mountain View, there's
some really good crack getting smoked. Maybe it's time to review
Google's financials and think like like the monoplist that Microsoft
is. If you wanted...

Linux skills? The reply was that Microsoft is working on an emulator
