Microsoft Fights For Browser Plug-Ins 06/09/2004 08:46 AM
Microsoft fired another shot in its defense of the patent infringement suit brought by Eolas Technologies, asking the U.S. District Court to overturn a Federal Court ruling. Microsoft has lost twice in the suit, once in a jury trial and once on appeal. Now, it's asked the U.S. District court to overturn the $521 million judgment and injunction against distribution of its Internet Explorer browser. Eolas, a spin-off from the University of California, sued Microsoft in February, 1999 for patent infringement related to the way the Internet Explorer browser handles media and plug-ins within Web pages.

(v 2)
05/07/2004 01:56 AM
Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), currently a Release Candidate in Beta testing, includes significant enhancements to the Windows Firewall component, previously known as the Internet Connection Firewall (ICF). Windows Firewall is a stateful host-based firewall that discards unsolicited incoming traffic, providing a level of protection for computers against malicious users or programs. To provide better protection for computers connected to any kind of network (such as the Internet, a home network, or an organization network), Windows XP SP2 enables Windows Firewall on all network connections by default. This new behavior can impair some types of communications. This article describes how to deploy the appropriate configuration settings for Windows Firewall on an organization network so that it is enabled and providing protection, and so that communications are not impaired.

Microsoft Corp. today announced public availability of Windows® Rights Management Services (RMS), information protection technology for Windows Server (TM) 2003 that helps enterprises and organizations safeguard their sensitive digital information from unauthorized use. RMS allows information workers to distribute information within their organizations and define how and under what circumstances it can be used, such as when it expires and who can open, modify, print and forward it. The ability to express and enforce document-level protection will allow organizations to internally share information more broadly, with less risk of inadvertent or intentional misuse.

07/12/2004 09:23 AM
Today at its Worldwide Partner Conference, Microsoft Corp. introduced Windows® Marketplace, an upcoming shopping and downloading site that will provide customers with one-stop access to software, hardware and peripherals that work with the Windows platform. This new offering provides a cost-effective way for participating partners to work with Microsoft and CNET Networks to gain exposure to millions of potential customers through online shopping and electronic software distribution -- all in one place. Windows Marketplace also will make it easy for customers to navigate, find, try and buy thousands of compelling products to meet their needs and enhance their Windows computing experience. Windows Marketplace is scheduled to launch to end-user customers in the United States this fall, but Microsoft is giving partners an early opportunity to get their products into the Marketplace before it becomes available publicly.

A broad range of industry leaders have announced their support of this upcoming technology, including leading PC OEMs and consumer electronics device manufacturers including Arcadyan Technology Corp., Creative Labs, Dell Inc., Mediabolic Inc., PRISMIQ Inc., Rockford Corp., Roku, Simple Devices Inc. and Toshiba. Leading content service providers such as LAUNCH Music on Yahoo!, MusicNow (formerly FullAudio), and Napster also endorsed Windows Media Connect for its ability to extend the reach of their content and services to a new range of consumer devices. Available in 2004, Windows Media Connect technology will overcome two critical hurdles faced by networked media devices today: compatibility between proprietary devices and ease of access to content stored on the PC.

When a content owner creates an audio or video stream, they can add script commands (such as URL script commands and custom script commands) to be encoded in the stream. Bootable WinXP CD or DVD

Bootable WinXP CD or DVD 03/17/2005 03:08 AM
We all have heard of the linux distributions that could be booted from a CD, now we can do the same thing with Windows. It's called BartPE (BART Pre-installed Enviroment). It will give you a complete Win32 environment with network support, a graphical user interface (800x600) and FAT/NTFS/CDFS filesystem support. Very handy for burn-in testing systems with no OS, rescuing files to a network share, virus scan and much more. It runs on Windows 2000/XP/2003/BartPE. It does not run on Windows NT4/ME/9x.

Here's a little caveat from the website.. "PE Builder is not a Microsoft product and does not create Microsoft Windows Pre-installation Environment ("WinPE"). Using PE Builder does not grant you a license to Microsoft WinPE or to use the Windows XP or Server 2003 binaries in a manner other than stated in the End-User License Agreement included in your version of Microsoft Windows XP or Windows Server 2003. Microsoft has not reviewed or tested PE Builder and does not endorse its use."

There are similar devices available in the US - it's essentially what Vonage sells you when you get the service, albeit not exactly the same standards - but it's sort of interesting to see it actually on the router itself, as a sign that we're moving towards one point of entry for all household data.
