New York Tax Collectors Telecommuting To
Tennesee
03/29/2005 11:33 PM

As telecommuting becomes a more viable option for the modern day worker (some are even saying that telecommuti ng is necessary for national security), who better to put a speed bump on the road to progress than the state tax system? Today, the New York Court of Appeals ruled that an out-of-state telecommuter is liable for a full year's worth of New York state income tax. The court's argument is that the state of New York provided the opportunity for the job, and therefore, should be able to tax the full amount of that person's income. Luckily for the telecommuter in question, he resides in Tennessee, which does not have state income tax, so he's not being double taxed. Numerous telecommuters now face that daunting possibility. The court's myopic decision today could end up backfiring -- telecommuters will now be less willing to work for New York companies. Sounds like a case of "taxation without representation", and we all remember what happened the last time that happened.

Reassuring News For Canadian Collectors

Reassuring News For Canadian Collectors 06/16/2004 02:12 AM
While visiting a local collector store, I was given a quick glance at the Hasbro Canada Retail site. Showing along side the OTC and VOTC, were the Galactic Heroes two packs. Like the 3 3/4” assortments, the Preskool inspired line is being solicited for a July release and have a unit cost of $5.95CND each, which should work out to less than $10CND at retail. It is important to state that what Hasbro offers does not dictate what is actually order by retailers, so it is still up to Canadian collectors to ask their local retailers and collector stores to order these items.

Old New York is right here around us

Old New York is right here around us 03/14/2005 05:38 PM
What a perfect article to welcome me back on my visit to NYC: Here Is New York, Right Where We Left It. Phew! Except of course the author is talking about old New York: hat shops, places to get a mug of beer for fifty cents, and pigs-knuckles lunches. It's a neat look at the small New York shops, bars, and restaurants hidden amongst the ever-increasing sprawl of national chains springing up around the City. At the very end of the article is perhaps the most important bit: One thing the streets surely stand to lose when these frayed patches of New York's vast tapestry are finally replaced is a measure of their human scale. These remnants of a less mobile and more local New York speak of a more modest urban life in which goods and money traveled in smaller amounts between slightly less hurried parties moving in slightly smaller orbits. No one goes to these old places to be seen or find the perfect pair of shoes or have a life-changing culinary experience or stock up on Turkish pistachios or toilet paper. If for nothing else, people go to these unfancy places because they embody a hidden truth about New York: that it is possible in almost any part of this monstrously huge, indifferent city to feel strangely at home. How perfectly true.

In Boston last month, the Democratic National Convention felt sometimes like a street party that spilled more or less seamlessly from Boston Common to the Fleet Center to the bar at the Four Seasons. I was surprised to learn that a small Guantanamo-style detention center run by the Wackenhut corporation is in place mere blocks from my home. Somewhere around 200 detainees are housed in a non-descript warehouse somewhere in Springfield Gardens, Queens. I find it disturbing and distressing, especially now that they've gone on hunger strike, which is the only reason that I've learned that they are there.
