[foo] Mag stripes 09/11/2004 02:39 PM
Billy Hoffman wondered what was encoded in the mag stripe inside his various cards. A friend had a reader, that he got from Germany for about $300. He discovered that some encoded his social security number for no apparent reason. a mag stripe is PVC, magnetic particles and glue. The particles are arranged in magnetized vertical strips. There are 3-4 tracks on each. Stripe 1 can have 100 characters, stripe 2 can have 40, and stripe 3 is journalized. (I'm not sure why journalizing it is useful.) There's nothing available for reading cards except expensive, proprietary models. So Billy wrote...

SQL Stripes is an application that helps you, the SQL Server DBA, to have complete control over your servers. From the high-level of monitoring essential components to the low-level of analyzing your various databases. The idea is that each one of your servers gets a 'Stripe' which contains valuable real-time data on the selected server. It is an intuitive and easy to use component, and is intended for SQL Server DBA's. [Freeware 5.15 MB]

Getting my stripes

Getting my stripes 10/29/2003 02:42 PM

Well colour me yellow and black, I've just become the latest member of the web standards project! I've been an avid supporter of the web standards movement for over a year now - in fact, my first ever entry linked to their launch of Phase II. It's a great honour to be a part of something I've supported for so long and I hope to become heavily involved in the Learn campaign, which aims to provide resources to developers who want to learn to use web standards effectively. I'm joining a truly talented team and I look forward to helping encourage web professionals to adopt standards and make the web a more interoperable place.

Is Microsoft changing its stripes? 07/19/2004 09:50 AM
Now that Microsoft's six-year anti-trust battle is over and the company has hammered out historic partnerships with bitter rivals Sun Microsystems and Oracle, is the vendor on a path to becoming a kinder, gentler industry titan? "I'm not so sure kinder and gentler is the starting point to describe Microsoft. It's more like being more pragmatic," says Jonathan Eunice, an analyst with Illuminata. "Pragmatism means companies like Microsoft, Sun and Oracle can somewhat bury the hatchet and work together, but it's certainly not warm feelings all around. It's an enlightened self-interest."

Jody Radzik's new bl0g critiques gurus
of all spiritual stripes
03/19/2005 03:02 AM
David Pescovitz: For more than a decade, my friend Jody Radzik has dropped countless spiritual mindbombs on me. In fact, he's probably the only person that holds my interest in such matters. He has a wonderfully-open mind, but he's certainly no sucker. Jody's an intrepid explorer, always ready to dig into a belief system but never afraid to knock a guru off his or her throne with a brilliant and witty observation. In fact, his new blog--guruphiliac--is about just that. This week's posts include the likes of subway-gassing Aum Shinrikyo guru Shoko Asahara's prison proclivity to "wearing diapers and mumbling incomprehensibly" and news of Hindus pissed off at a Ford commercial where Shiva discusses how owning the car is good Karma. From the guruphiliac mission statement:
"While we understand that gurus are held sacred by many, they are also public figures deserving of scrutiny. Our primary aim is to inject a little humor into what can be an excessively self-righteous enterprise, and to illustrate the primary truth that no matter how divine their devotees believe them to be, gurus poop on the same pot we do."
