Damage may be done

Damage may be done 03/29/2005 08:00 PM

The possible creation of a virus that can affect the Apple Macintosh operating system seems too great a price to pay just to prove Symantec wrong. Last week, Tennessee-based DVForge, which builds Apple Computer accessories, offered the prize to the first person to infect two unprotected G5 PowerMacs running OS X 10.3 before July 31, 2005. DVForge CEO Jack Campbell claims he devised the contest in response to Symantec’s Internet Security Threat Report that said Mac OS X is under increasing threat from viruses as it grows in popularity and gains marketshare. Symantec caused a stir throughout the Mac community when it released the report last week. Campbell was so offended by Symantec's "fear" tactics, he offered to double the reward of its contest to $50,000, if any employee of Symantec won the contest. Although Campbell quickly cancelled the contest, citing legal issues and the concerns expressed by many Mac users, the damage may already be done. "During the first several hours after making the public announcement, I was contacted by a large number of Mac users and Mac software professionals who shared their thinking with me about the contest," said Campbell. "I have taken their advice very seriously, and have made the difficult decision to cancel our contest.” Unfortunately for Campbell, a contest such as this could be seen as endorsing the development and distribution of computer viruses – a U.S. federal crime punishable by up to 20 years in prison. And unfortunately for the Mac community, the contest already might have resulted in the birth of a virus that can affect the Apple operating system, which hasn’t really faced any major attacks, at least up until now.

Gauging the damage 01/03/2005 02:58 PM
The tsunami that so cruelly stole Christmas for so many in South Asia and around the globe remains mind-boggling in terms of the loss of life. But as the waves of horrific news begin to recede a bit, the economic pain -- at least by some measures -- may not be as severe as initially anticipated. From the Times:

More Spam Damage

More Spam Damage 04/18/2004 05:47 AM
I subscribe to a few IETF-centric mailing lists, including atom-syntax, that are hosted at the IMC; Recently, I posted an Atom-related suggestion (see also here) but the posting never showed up. I checked with Paul Hoffman, who does a fantastic job of running the site (competently-run mailing lists aren’t that easy to come by), and he told me I’d been auto-unsubscribed because my ISP had decided, deferring to the SpamCop Blocking List, that the IMC’s SMTP was a spam source and (temporarily) blacklisted it. This is the second time in a month that I’ve had legitimate emails get bounced this way. I re-subscribed from my Sun address, but apparently, to quote Paul: “If you trust spamcop, you will continue to lose your mail randomly without knowing why.” If you read the SpamCop page linked to above, it looks like SpamCop would agree with Paul’s analysis. Anyhow, now I’ll find out if my ISP will stop applying this filter to my email, and if not, I’ll have to find a new ISP.

Tokyo Damage Report

Tokyo Damage Report 09/01/2004 06:57 PM
Xeni Jardin: The self-described "American Jerk" behind Tokyo Damage Report says "This page is about interesting (meaning, fucked up) things that one can do in Tokyo. punk, visual, cosplay, s/m, gothic, street trends, capsule hotels, bizarre magazines, random subcultures, and bad Engrish. . . . .also it is about tokyo's urban legends: square watermelons, Sanrio condoms, politically incorrect vending machines, etc."

Here, you'll find photos and first-person accounts of odd things in Japan -- like this beauty product expo filled with bizarre gadgets and obliquely degrading experiences. Image at left: "fake treatments helping beautify fake people." Elsewhere, the blogger discusses "PORNO GAME CHEAT CODES" (Link):

"Welcome to REBEL 100. apparently for some guys, not only is it too difficult to have sex with living human females, it's ALSO TOO DIFFICULT TO SCORE WITH THEM IN X-RATED VIDEOGAMES TOO. here is the concept behind rebel 100: guys are getting turned down by PORN."

Here's another winning entry (Link):

"I noticed that JAPANESE PUNKS HAVE THE MOST FESTOONED BUTTS OF ANYONE EVER. Like a middle-aged man. . . as the hair has gotten smaller, the butts have gotten bigger. Consider how many little doodads dangle from the cellphone of a stereotypical schoolgirl. Then multiply that by ten, and turn the cellphone into a denim-and-leather butt, and you have a punk. Today's punks have not just wallet chains and cigarettes in their behinds, but so much booty fashion I had to make a whole glossary (how did I conduct this research? I'll leave the actual process of asking people about their butts to your imagination.)"

Garbage man damage update

Garbage man damage update 03/19/2005 03:02 AM
Mark Frauenfelder: Picture 1-11 (Click thumbnail image for enlargement) Here's an update from yesterday's garbage man damage report. The cable guy spliced the TV cable yesterday afternoon. He did a nice job. I gave him an orange from the orange tree.

The phone company won't come until Saturday. I was getting tired of having no internet or landline phone, so late yesterday afternoon I grabbed the phone cable that was lying across the road and ran with it quickly to the ladder and got up on the roof with it. (I had to run fast because there were a lot of cars on the street and I didn't want one to drive into the cable when it was only a couple of feet off the ground.) Then I took a bunch of wire nuts and some wire strippers and spliced the severed wires. Doesn't it look pretty? This ought to do until the phone repairman comes and yells at me for fixing it myself.
Also, here are a couple of emails I've gotten about yesterday's incident:

Jay says: I feel your pain about having the lines cut--I work from home and the loss of my cable line would be a disaster. And your garbage man sounds like a jerk. But don't castigate them all. There are deadlines--the crap has to be picked up in one day whether every house leaves one bag or a small mountain. I think there is plenty of stress too. Garbage stinks--and plenty of it is heavy and awkward to lift. I have left hot water tanks, washers, dryers, mounds of wet drywall, paneling, chunks of concrete--and plenty of good ol' household waste. It gets cleared away without fanfare, and I am very grateful. I live in a pretty affluent community and the garbage men make about 13 bucks an hour. Maybe trying to make ends meet on that paltry sum engenders some anger; for sure, it is hard to derive much joy and fun from life on such a cruddy wage. Or maybe it is the people who get impatient and roar around a stopped truck and nearly run them down all the time. Whatever. I don't call that well-paid, and I am ashamed it isn't higher. You had a bad day for sure, but I thought I'd point out how you came across and offer the other side. Boingboing is one the few things that lives up to its billing "a directory of wonderful things." Just this once, not so wonderful. -- Jay

Levi says: If you're looking for an answer [to the question "Why are garbage men so angry?], re-read what you said. When times get tough, you can fall back on your social status, education, or whatever else you inherently feel the world owes you. He, on the other hand, gets the shit end of that world payment structure. He implicitly takes the shit from people like you for being lesser than you. Feed that cycle back for years and years, and you get your incident today.

Greg says: Here are some answers:
1) He was as high as he thought he could be and still do his job.  It's a boring job.
2) Realistically, it's not all that well-paid, and there's no room for advancement, especially without a bit of education.
3) They can be fired, but they have to work at it.  Maybe this is his chance?  One of our guys rolled his oversize truck on a residential street in front of a visiting dignitary.  That works, but you need to be on a hill.
4) It's a boring job, and you only get to listen to junk radio.

Joshua says: Our garbagemen knocked over our mailbox and just kept going. Which meant the post office wouldn't deliver our mail until the mailbox was fixed (because they post office won't deliver to our door, only to our streetside mailbox--I don't know why). My wife called our landlady, who called the city about the mailbox. The mailbox was fixed (by our handyman), but as far as we know, nothing ever happened to the garbagemen who knocked over the mailbox.

Spiderman Bootlegger Caught -- But How
Much Damage Did He Do?
07/01/2004 03:46 AM
While Hollywood and its friends are absolutely thrilled with the free publicity they get from the news that a projectionist with night vision goggles happened to catch a teenager trying to record the new Spiderman movie, most people are ignoring the real issue. Since this happened in California, where we have this wonderfu l new law the kid may now face serious time in jail. Now, obviously, he was doing something wrong. However, does the punishment fit the crime? I don't use file sharing systems, so I have no idea for sure, but I'd be willing to bet that the movie is already available online for anyone who went looking for it -- and it's probably available in a much higher quality format thanks to insid ers leaking the film out. In other words, what this kid was doing probably wasn't going to cost anyone in Hollywood a dime. However, you can bet that large loss numbers will get thrown about when the kid finds himself in court.

Mobile Phone May Cause Hearing Damage

Mobile Phone May Cause Hearing Damage 08/27/2004 02:00 PM
There are lots of theories about ways in which mobile phones can cause you harm. Most of these are denied by the handset makers themselves. However, Siemens is now admitting a potentially dangerous bug in some of their phones. It turns out that if you're talking on it as the battery runs out, they're so afraid you might not realize what's happening that it plays the "disconnect" tone at a decibel level that could cause hearing damage. There's no word on whether or not anyone has actually been hit with hearing damage, and the wording is vague enough that this might not be a big problem. They say "prolonged exposure" to the sound causes hearing damage -- but it seems unlikely that anyone would be exposed to the noise for very long. Either way, the company is working on fixing the bug and getting it out to users as quickly as possible.

Another Day, Another Massive Security
Breach ... Yawn

Another Day, Another Massive Security
Breach ... Yawn
04/14/2005 04:59 PM
News of yet another whopping security breach hit the wires today. This time, thieves may have swiped credit card info of more than 180,000 HSBC Bank MasterCard shoppers. We're hearing of these large-scale breakdowns all too frequently, with hundr eds of thousands of people affected each time. They've probably been happening for years and are only coming to light now, thanks to California's disclosure law. Alarming as this is, even more alarming is that these incidents barely register in the public consciousness. Instead, people are misdirecting their fears to Google map lookups and the like, as Scott Granneman points out in his column (don't worry, you've got the right column if you're reading a long intro about a WWI poet). The more we hear about a trend of scary facts, the more inured we get to them. Granneman calls for national legislation that would require companies to quickly disclose data theft to their customers. A good idea, but taking his original point a step further, people might also get desensitized to notices of stolen data. Save for those unfortunate few who have experienced the painful process of dealing with identity theft, it would take extraordinary circumstances for most people to care. Maybe another dozen or so cases of 200,000-plus customers getting their personal data ripped off by professional crooks will do the trick.

LexisNexis Suddenly Notices Massive Data
Security Breaches Everywhere They Look
04/12/2005 06:01 AM
Funny how once the media attention for the various computer security break-ins started receiving attention, the various firms who were caught handing out your private data suddenly noticed that they'd actually been leaking data all along. Choicepoint, which was the first big one to admit a problem, later found a histo ry of leaked data. It appears they're not alone. LexisNexis, whose Seisant subsidiary wasn't particularly careful in how it kept all that data about you that you didn't realize they had (much of it, probably wrong ), decided that maybe it would be a smart move to look over some past transactions to see if this data leakage was a new problem. Turns out that it wasn't. LexisNexis is now admitting that they found not one or two more cases, but fifty-nine cases where their security was breached, opening up access to all sorts of private data (this is one of the databases the government likes to use to build profiles on people). The company is sending out letters to 280,000 people to let them know that they may have to spend the rest of their lives carefully scanning credit reports to make sure the company's own negligence didn't result in identity theft. Meanwhile, everyone's still being told that, basically, there 's nothing they can do against any of these firms that didn't seem to care about your privacy at all.
