Can't Get Longer Battery Life, So How About Faster Charges?

Can't Get Longer Battery Life, So How
About Faster Charges?

Can't Get Longer Battery Life, So How
About Faster Charges?
03/29/2005 05:32 PM

One of the biggest issues holding back portable technologies is the battery life question. While computing power seems to increase rapidly, battery power has been unable to keep up. While there are many efforts underway to improve battery life, most don't measure up (unless you want to increase the risk that your battery might explode). Fuel cells don't appear to be the answer either. However, just because you can't increase battery life, it doesn't mean other improvements can't be made. Decre asing power consumption is one area that is getting plenty of attention, but the rechargeable nature of batteries is another interesting space. Toshiba has announced a new technology which they claim can charge batteries much faster. They claim this technology only requires a one minute charge to get a battery up to 80% power -- which could go a long way to solving certain battery life problems. If you can just do a quick "power up," then many other issues are less noticeable. Still, there aren't many details about this new technology, and lots of stuff in labs (and press releases) don't seem to act quite the same way in the real world (assuming they actually reach the real world).

Lithium ion Battery Which Charges in One

Lithium ion Battery Which Charges in One
Minute
03/30/2005 04:59 PM

Toshiba has developed a new Lithium-ion battery which charges up to 80% of it’s capacity in just 1 minute.  Toshiba's prototype battery has a capacity of 600mAh and measures.8mm thick, 62mm high and 35mm deep. It was demonstrated in hard disc music player for about 10 minutes by charging 5 milliwatts in 5 seconds. According to a Toshiba Lab spokesman, the battery shows less than 1 percent deterioration in capacity after 1,000 cycles of discharging and recharging. The battery is planned to be available in 2006. Here are more details from the eetimes.com.

Toshiba achieved the breakthrough by using nanoparticles of several hundred nanometers coated uniformly on the negative electrode and newly developed electrolytic solution. This stable formulation does not react with lithium ions at the cathode in a manner that would lower the battery's cycle time. The electrolytic solution and nanoparticles enable large number of lithium ions move quickly to the cathode and store in the particles in recharging mode. With the stable electrolyte solution, the battery discharges 80 percent of its capacity at minus 40 degrees centigrade, compared to 100 percent discharge at 25 degrees centigrade for conventional Li-ion batteries. In the high temperature operation, Toshiba reported that the capacity deteriorates by only 5 percent at temperatures of 45 degrees centigrade after 1,000 cycles of discharging and recharging.

Panasonic SL-CT820 CD Player with 220
Hour Battery Life
09/14/2004 04:52 PM

220_mp3.jpg imagePanasonic's new "SL-CT820" has the world's longest battery life for MP3/CD players: 220 hours.

As you would imagine, there are a couple technicalities to this figure. First of all, you need to be playing WMA files; your maximum battery life with MP3 is 210 hours. (Oh damn). You also need to use one of those external batteries - you know, the ones you somehow connect with a cable to the CD player. But even if you choose not to, you still get a 130 hour playback time of MP3 audio. Pretty swell, considering even the latest hard drive-based players get, what, 20-some hours of playback?

Cory Doctorow: The AlphaSmart Neo is a full-sized keyboard with a little LCD screen on the top. It acts as a word-processor, letting you type into its 512k cache while it draws power from 3 AA batteries. When you get back to your Mac or PC, you just dump the text over USB or IR. The thing runs for 700 hours on a 3 AA batts and costs $250, and weighs about 2 lbs.

My only complaint about this thing is the storage: 512k? I know that's a whole novel and then some, but geez, flash-RAM is so cheap now -- why not just give it a SD slot and I could use an old 64MB card from my last camera? Link (via Engadget)

Update: Chris Taylor points out that AlphaSmart has a model that supports memory cards -- and it comes with WiFi and PalmOS.

Linksys says faster..FASTER! 01/04/2005 08:10 PM
Over at CES, Linksys will be announcing a new series of 802.11g products that integrate SRX, a new speed boosting feature.

Currently, 802.11g networks have a range of between 120 and 160 feet and a transfer at 54mbps.

Linksys claims that the SRX enabled 802.11g products can provide 3 times the range (450 feet) and is 8 times faster (i.e. nearly USB 2 speed wireless).

It's completely compatible with other 802.11g and 802.11b networks.

The wireless router is expected to sell for $199 and each card around $129 and should be available at stores shortly.
