Future Intel Mobile Chips to Add
Location-Based Services
06/03/2004 01:35 PM

Though it's impossible to consider without thinking of the inevitable exploits (from Big Brotherish agencies and rowdy script kiddies alike), Intel has said they are developing support within their mobile processor line to allow computers to be aware of their physical location at all times. Although nothing is set in stone yet, Intel is working with others (Microsoft, for example) to add features that would integrate simple things like, say, selection of which printer to use based on proximity into future laptops and mobile devices. Sounds okay, but also the sort of thing that will probably hit all at once as mobile phones are already gaining GPS abilities and Bluetooth short range communication -- soon all of our devices will know where you are and will be happy to tattle to each other where you're hiding, whether you like it or not.

Reuters - The use of a mobile phone to pinpoint a caller's location and nearby businesses was a hot concept when the tech bubble peaked in 2000, but only now with better phones and software does it stand to succeed, companies say. Mobile operators are selling much-improved services that help users locate friends or get directions to the nearest train station, but they have to fight off consumers' bad memories from 2000 and 2001, when they offered illegible maps on tiny black-and-white screens.

Are Mobile Phones Disconnecting Us From
Geographic Location?

Are Mobile Phones Disconnecting Us From
Geographic Location?
11/18/2003 05:51 AM
It's happened to most of us, I'm sure. You're traveling somewhere, and you receive a phone call on your mobile phone, and you explain to the person that you're not in your hometown, but 3,000 miles away. An architecture critic is now complaining that the real problem with mobile phone use in public isn't that it bugs other people, but that it r emoves our sense of place and removes us from connecting with the location we're actually in at the moment. He's particularly upset that people walking around talking on their mobile phones aren't "experiencing" the urban landscape around them (no surprise that this comes from an architecture critic, whose very job is to notice the urban landscape around him). Instead, he complains that we're barely connected to our physical location, and quick to jump to the virtual location of our mobile phones. Of course, even if he's right, I wonder if that's such a terrible thing. No one is being forced to ignore their surroundings - and if the mobile phone opens up new or different landscapes around them (real or virtual) all it's doing is adding more options.
