Mark Frauenfelder: Lundgren Monuments makes glass tombstones.

Picture
2-8Radiant and incredibly tactile, Lundgren Monuments are designed for the individual who defies definition, and in the setting of a memorial park or cemetery they are glowing beacons that stand out amongst the traditional stone memorials.

Let The Dead Speak: Put Video Screens On

Let The Dead Speak: Put Video Screens On
Their Tombstones

A few years ago, video game company Acclaim came up with the idea of adverti sing their latest video game on cemetery tombstones. Obviously, this was a bit of a publicity stunt, but someone is now going a bit further with the idea of making better use of all that tombstone space and is trying to offer video screens for your tombstone. The idea is that sometime before you die, you can record various videos of yourself talking about whatever you want such as final messages to loved ones (though, the inventor suggests: "having the final say on a disagreement" making you wonder what's been going on in his life lately). However, given Acclaim's publicity stunt, I wonder if people could just sell advertising space on their video screen? These video screens would be interactive as well. The graveside visitor could click on the segment they wanted to watch. He even suggests hooking up the tombstone video screen to the internet, so the person who died could use one of those silly "after I die" email services to update his messages. Why not just put this on the web? Well, that's no fun for people who (apparently) want to wander aimlessly through cemeteries listening to the last thoughts of random dead people. As for the business model, well that's still a bit up in the air, but he actually suggests making the tombstones coin operated, so you have to plunk in a couple quarters to actually watch your loved one's message. Either that, or the cemetery could rent out headphones (just like airplanes) for anyone who wants to listen in on the messages from beyond the grave.

Clear concrete

Clear concrete 07/08/2004 10:48 AM
concrete2The Associated Press has an interesting article about the translucent concrete developed by Hungarian architect Aron Losonczi. During the mixing process, glass fibers are added to the traditional stone, cement, and water. This enables light to shine through the material. Several variations of the new material are on display as part of a National Building Museum exhibit called Liquid Stone: New Architecture in Concrete. Judging from the Web site, it looks to be a stunning exhibit. Link (to AP article) Link (to Liquid Stone) (Thanks, Gabe!)

Xeni Jardin: Ripped from the headlines over at Fleshbot:
Concrete Ron describes himself as "perhaps the greatest video editor of all time", and anyone who's ever caught Concrete TV on Manhattan public access television over the last decade or so probably wouldn't argue: a typical episode incorporates vintage porn movies, 80s aerobics videos, car crash footage, Hong Kong shoot-em-ups, old commercials, beefcake reels, pro wrestling smackdowns, cheesy B-movie moments, sex education films, random explosions, wet t-shirt contests, and plenty of "raw emotion, euphoria, physical collision, glee, fantasy, despair, and discomfort" in one noisy, violent, sexy, and brilliantly edited pop culture/infoporn mashup. If we ever had to show visitors from another planet what's going on in our collective brains at any given moment, we'd make them tune in here.

Ward talks Wiki

Ward talks Wiki 10/29/2003 12:12 AM

Artima have published the first installment of Bill Venners' Conversation with Ward Cunningham, which focuses on the Wiki. When asked how readers can get a bigger picture of what is going on in a Wiki, Ward responds with this:

The first thing you have to understand is that because we made wiki easier for authors, we actually made it harder for readers. There is an organization there, and the organization can be improved, but it isn't highly organized. So the feeling for a reader is one of foraging in a wilderness for tidbits of information. You stumble across some great ones and you say, "This is fantastic, why doesn't somebody just make a list of all the great pieces so I don't have to look at the rest." In other words, "Why doesn't somebody organize this so I can get answers to my questions quickly?" Sooner or later they realize, "Gee, I could do that." They put in a month or two of finding what they care about, and then they make a page, which is their take on what the organization of wiki is.

I think this goes a long way to explaining why a lot of people dislike the Wiki format.
