04/15/2005 04:31 PMI don't know what's up with the Verizon ad sticking in Internet
Explorer, but we're looking into it. Sorry for any annoyance.
Update: Okay, we killed it! Sorry about that. Apparently it was
getting stuck on the page like a pop-up, although that's certainly not
what it was intended to do. Thanks to the dozens of you who swore
never to read the site again if we didn't fix it and the two of you
who asked nicely. Ads are a necessary evil, but always feel free to
let us know if they do anything obnoxious.

Verizon About To Spread The EV-DO
Verizon About To Spread The EV-DO
09/22/2004 05:16 PMRumors have been flying for the past month or so about where and when
Verizon was going to next launch their 3G EV-DO wireless broadband
service. Now, they're finally admitting that they're
launching 11
new cities, and 8 additional airports this coming Monday and they
still expect to expand much more before the end of the year. It
certainly looks like their aggressive rollout plans are working. They
say they're still focused on business customers using laptops and PDAs
with datacards -- but that they'll launch EV-DO handsets and consumer
plans sometime next year. Also, while the story doesn't say
anything, the other rumors we're hearing are that the price is
dropping as well, from the ever-popular $80/month to the slightly more
reasonable $60/month range (though, this may only be for certain
customers who do some negotiating).
MSN Mobile Available On Verizon
MSN Mobile Available On Verizon
08/05/2004 02:31 PMMicrosoft Corp. on Thursday said its mobile messaging software is
available for Verizon Wireless cellular phones. MSN Mobile can be
downloaded from Verizon's online store, and installed on any of three
handsets, the LG VX6000, LG VX4400, and the LG VX4500. The software
costs $2.49 a month for subscribers before Oct. 26. After that,
subscriptions are $2.99 a month.
"MSN Mobile builds upon our relationship with Microsoft and is a
welcomed addition to our Get It Now (online) service," said Jim
Straight, vice president of data and multimedia services for
Bedminster, N.J.-based, Verizon Wireless, a joint venture of Verizon
Communications and Vodafone. MSN Mobile subscribers can access their
MSN Hotmail inbox and set up alerts for incoming email messages. In
addition, users can instant message with people on PCs or MSN Mobile
handsets.

Verizon to Expand EV-DO
09/23/2004 01:03 PMVerizon Wireless said it will introduce its 3G service to 11 markets
starting next week: In what appears to be a direct hit against Wi-Fi,
Verizon also said it would launch its EV-DO service in 20 airports
around the country. A recent report from TeleAnalytics showed that the
use of Wi-Fi in airports has grown by more than 350 percent in a
six-month period. It appears that Verizon is looking to capture a bit
of that demand for wireless Internet access. However, its service
still costs $80 a month while most Wi-Fi access charges are
significantly less....

Verizon Says Don't Be Stupid
Verizon Says Don't Be Stupid
05/27/2004 09:35 AMSometimes you have to wonder why companies bother to put out press
releases. We don't usually post press releases here, but some are
just so odd, they deserve to be called out. Verizon Wireless put out
a press release today that can best be described as telling people:
don't be
stupid while using your mobile phone. Basically, it's a list of
things that you shouldn't do while driving and talking on your mobile
phone ("Never take notes or write down phone numbers while driving!").
It's not as if someone is going to read this list, smack their head
and say "Aha! No wonder I keep getting into accidents!" Then, at the
end, they sneak in the real reason for this press release, first
saying: "Dropped calls and dead zones can be frustrating for drivers,"
which may be true, but doesn't seem to have much to do with the rest
of the press release. So, they quickly follow that up with the "oh,
and by the way..." part of the press release reminding people that
number portability is now in effect - so, if you must do stupid things
on your mobile phone while driving, you might as well do them as a
Verizon Wireless customer.

Verizon CEO Derides
Verizon CEO Derides
04/16/2005 09:36 AM Vitriol spews from Verizon CEO's lips on municipal networks, customer
expectations, cancellation fees: Get this man a Valium, stat! Verizon
CEO Ivan Seidenberg needs to calm down a bit. He thinks San
Francisco's municipal network idea is "one of the dumbest ideas I've
ever heard" because the network has to be built, designed, and
operated. Oddly, Verizon has no expertise in building campus-wide
Wi-Fi networks, and thus isn't really qualified to express that sort
of opinion. I had the same reaction to reading a Comcast
spokesperson's critique of the potential of a city-wide wireless
network: Comcast doesn't build that; they're not qualified to say it's
possible or not. What's even funnier about this quote is that Verizon
will probably bid to build city-wide networks in Minneapolis and
Philadelphia....

MCI Picks Verizon Again
MCI Picks Verizon Again
03/29/2005 02:05 PMQwest has been continually wooing MCI over the past few weeks, and
yesterday made an offer in which they demanded an answer from MCI by
next Tuesday. Apparently, MCI didn't need that much time (or, really,
any time at all), as they almost immediately
accepted
Verizon's latest (slightly larger) offer and shunned Qwest's
offer. It appears MCI stills sees much more synergy in working with a
strong Verizon than a weak Qwest.

RIAA subpoena decision the folks at cable provider Charter
Communications have responded with a "what the hell?" since they just
got a completely different ruling and were forced to hand over the
names of 200 subscribers. So now, in light of the newer Appeals Court
decision, the folks at Charter are
going back to court and asking to have their decision
overturned and asking the RIAA to
give back the
information on their 200 customers. Of course, I'm no lawyer, but I'm
pretty sure the Verizon ruling is in a completely different circuit,
so the Verizon ruling isn't actually a precedent. Still, it could
make a court reconsider. Either way, it sounds like these sorts of
cases may take a while to settle.

Verizon Doubles DSL Speed
Verizon Doubles DSL Speed
09/07/2004 11:25 PMVerizon Communications has doubled the speed of consumer DSL
service is a dozen east coast states. If the market reacts well, the
remaining states will receive the same faster DSL alternative. The
additional bandwidth is a reaction to Comcast's doubling the speed of
its cable broadband service, earlier this year. The extra bandwidth
will be a big hit with online gamers and professionals who work from
home.
For about $40 a month, the new DSL bandwidth will be 3 Mbps,
downstream, and 768 Kbps, upstream. For cost-conscious customers who
only send and receive e-mail and surf occasionally, a half-speed
option will be available for $30 a month.
Dave's Opinion
Just over half of online Americans have broadband service at home: 63
million or 51 percent. There's always a use for more bandwidth, even
by those who don't consider themselves technically sophisticated or
have flexibility in their personal schedules. When it comes to network
connectivity, faster is always better.
